Leaves a lot to be desired by hchris77 ,Aug 04 '04
Pros: great idea, cleans well Cons: Messy clean up, high-maintenance, doesn't easily cover all surface
I was very disappointed by this machine. It's a very good concept--a hands-free vacuum--but I quickly found some major flaws. First of all, the Roomba requires some pre-cleaning: any spare cords, rug tassles, etc. need to be removed from the floor so the roomba doesn't get stuck or jammed. Secondly, cleaning up the vacuum is a very messy job. It's bagless, so when that compartment that "traps" the dirt opens to be cleaned out, a lot of that dirt, dust and grime goes right back into the air...and onto your hands. Once you discount those two factors, this machine has the potential to be a great, convenient timesaver. Until then, however, I would save money and frustration and stick to the old fashioned way of vacuuming.
Roomba Intelligent FloorVac Vacuum by reviewer8 ,Mar 04 '04
Pros: cleans pretty well, easy to use, effortless Cons: trouble maneuvering between objects, needs more than one virtual wall unit to clean some areas
This is a great unit. You can turn it on and walk away it is effortless to use. I found that this unit picks up pretty well. It has some trouble picking up dog hair. The Roomba does get caught up in some areas. It has some trouble maneuvering between objects. If you don't have 2 virtual wall units the Roomba can't clean small areas if they can't be totally blocked off. You can buy an additional virtual wall unit. You can select between three room sizes, small, medium and large. The Roomba stops automatically. I bought this for a family member who is confined to a wheelchair and has difficulty pushing a vacuum cleaner. It is good for this because it is light enough to lift and the on/off switches are easily accessible.
Pros: Runs unattended, gets under a lot of furniture. Cons: Price, charging time, durability.
I've been using the Roomba vacuum now for over two months, and it has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
Reduces the frequency of normal vacumming. Does a fairly good job and can get under a lot of furniture that otherwise would have been missed. After the first couple of times vacuuming, you can leave it unattended.
Disadvantages:
Cost is high compared to a standard vacuum which you will also need. Battery takes 12hrs to charge, so you really only get 1 use per day. Pet hair can frequently get caught on the wheels and internally.
It's the cutest little thing...but it works!! by cheri_jones ,Jan 16 '04
Pros: Cute, lightweight, goes under furniture; VERY entertaining for pets (I kinda like watching it too!) Cons: The dust cup is small, but hey, for what it does,I can live with that!
Wow, finally something that pretty much does what they claim it can do! I love my RAINBOW vacuum and use it once a week...but the ROOMBA takes care of everything in the "inbetween" times! Once you get the "ins and outs" of what you need to prepare the room, you can just turn it on and let it go! It's great for my hardwood and tile floors and the oriental style rug. The are absolutely right about the rugs with the fringes...they pose a problem, so I just pick them up before I start...no more problem! I bought my Roomba from HSN and it came with the "quick charge" battery charger and an extra "invisible wall"...all for $228...so I figured it was a pretty good deal. The quick charger is super....charges the Roomba in just a few hours!
Pros: Small, automatic, cleans under furniture, excellent job on hard floors Cons: Scares the dog, have to "prep" the room
Bought this little sucker (literally) several months ago. It performs as promised. It is necessary to make the room Roomba-friendly (no clutter, cords or wires on the floor). Then set it and let it go. It does a great job on hard floors (wood, tile, etc.) and a good job on carpet. On carpet you do need to use the big vaccuum every so often, but the Roomba pretty much takes care of hard floors. It's great for getting under the bed, etc. The charge does take a while, but it really doesn't matter - one charge will take care of the floors, then charge until next cleaning time.
Pros: small Cons: Isn't random and doesn't pick up much!
I bought this vacuum to save me some time but it is actually taking more time out of my day because I have to go over the areas again with our upright vacuum. The Roomba does not pick up what it should for the price, however my biggest complaint is that its "random" movement is not so random. It basically picks an area and goes around in circles until it runs out of batteries. I have a pretty small apartment and it can't even manage a whole room. In addition, it is not very quiet, especially for an apartment. My recommendation is that you same money and time and buy a regular vacuum!!!
Pros: easy to operate, painless to maintain Cons: doesn't respond to verbal commands LOL
This is great for pet hair! I cant believe what a difference its made in our house. We have two long haired dogs, and we used to just throw up our hands and let the lint and dust and hair take over. Now we run the Roomba a couple times a week in each room, and its amazing how much cleaner the whole house is. At first the dogs barked whenever they saw it running, but now they give it a sniff and then leave it alone. Its so nice to be able to just push a button, leave, and come back to a clean floor.

Beware! Roomba cannot be repaired by sweetj3821 ,Oct 18 '04
Pros: Great for in-between cleanings Cons: Can't be repaired!
I did like my Roomba. It was great for in-between cleaning. However, after 9 months the wheel broke and cannot be repaired...Roomba suggests buying another! I don't think so!
Roomba Review from GadgetGuys.com by snasta ,Nov 28 '03
Pros: Cleans well Cons: Long recharging time
Small lint bin
With a dog that sheds constantly and big doors and windows that are always open and letting in dust vacuuming is a constant chore around our house. After looking at the specs of the Roomba I decided to give it a try. After trying it out at our house for a few weeks the Roomba works very well.
Overall this gadget worked much better than expected. While it wont replace the vacuum cleaner at our house, it certainly reduces the number of times I have to drag that big, heavy beast out. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the few gadgets that stays around.
Pros: Ease of use, price Cons: loud, have to make sure floor is clutter free.
I have a Kirby but still like the Roomba for my hard wood floors, I never sweep anymore, this is a fantastic machine. Have two dogs and it keeps up with getting the hair from under the furniture and when you just don't feel like cleaning you just turn this puppy on and go. It is great.
Rumsfeld The Roomba Cleans Up! by hnlute ,Dec 13 '03
Pros: Cleans UNDER the furniture, it is easy to clean out, long running time. Cons: Expensive
We love our Roomba, it performs the light cleanup chore admirably while wandering about, under and around obstacles that would stop a regular vacuum cleaner. It is NOT an industrial strength vac, it picks up all the stuff your broom misses and then some but it will not pick up coins or heavy objects or dirt. It dusts well, it's rotary corner brooms swirl dust and dirt and grit (and HAIR!) into the path of the rotary broom and away it goes. The random pattern will over time cover almost all the surface of a floor from many angles.
The Roomba makes a bit of noise but is not nearly as loud as a standard vacuum, the noise fits the power level. It is easy to clean when done with a room and the charge is sufficient to thoroughly clean 2 large rooms before it'll need recharging.
Pros: Does a much better job than I can. Cons: Can't do stair treads, but otherwise he's great.
Why did we buy our Roomba? Seems like a no-brainer: we hate vacuuming. So we brought it home yesterday--it's hard to avoid calling it "him," as he seems like a pet--charged him up, and have been running him around the house.
He is wonderful. He pulled oodles of dirt out of places I thought I'd vacuumed fairly recently; okay, in the last six months. He did better than our Hoover under the bed, and got dirt and dust up from the most difficult spots, in the joints between baseboards and floors, for example.
He inevitably got a mouthful of electrical cords, but stopped before any damage was done. And best of all, for me at least, he is easy to carry up and down stairs, something which can *not* be said of the old vacuum.
Entertain the Ferret and Clean the Floor...at the Same Time! by larcd8835 ,Oct 02 '04
Pros: Turn it on, leave the house
Fun to watch it not fall down the stairs Cons: Too loud, misses corners, not good at changing hardwood to carpet
I love to vacuum the floor and not be home. I also love to vacuum the floor and be reading. Roomba lets me do this. I turn on the Roomba, and it cleans the floor while I do whatever else I need to do. I don't like to vacuum anyway, but I still want my floors clean. I like that it cleans under the furniture with the furniture still in place. If my ferret is out of her cage, she either follows the Roomba around and tries to figure out what it is, or hops on and rides it. (Yes, I supervise her while she does either.)
I do have problems with the Roomba. It gets stuck going from the hardwood floor to the carpet. Also, the dirt is still left behind in the corners of the room. Finally, the unit has to be cleaned after each use.
Pros: picks up most stuff on hard wood floors Cons: takes long time to charge, bagless feature means lots of sneezing, time consuming setup/cleanup
I love the convenience of Roomba, but the time I save doing other things is negated by the time I spend 1) emptying the roomba, 2) cleaning the roomba
3) setting up the room so it doesn't eat cords etc 4) its bagless feature means you come in very close contact with all of the dust and junk. My allergies were at their worst during Roomba because I had to touch all of the dust etc when cleaning and emptying the roomba. I do not think that the Roomba should take the place of your regular vacuum or in sweeping, but it is nice in between real vacuums to have things tidied up a bit.
operation problems with the roomba by echaps1 ,Jul 04 '08
Pros: when working it was very convienient Cons: Starts and stops every 45 seconds.
Approximately 1 ½ years ago I purchased a i robot roomba. For the first 8 months it worked wonderfully. After that I started having trouble. The people at i-robot worked with me to try and fix the problem. After 2 months of back and forth communication they replaced the i-robot scheduler. The new one worked well for the first month and then the trouble began again. I figured that I may need a new battery, which I purchased. This did not fix the problem. I tried contacting i-robot customer service again, but to no avail. Initially I loved the product, but I found all the problems it gave me was not worth the convenience of the machine. They also suggest ordering a new battery every year.
