I love this book and series!

by amber88 , Apr 14 '08
Pros: Necromancers, a hateful cat bound by magic
Cons: Not a movie!
This book is one awesome book. The first of three in a series. Sabriel is followed by Lirael, and The Abhorsen. This book has kind of a dark feeling, as it well should seeing as how its about Necromancers, which I love. I think Necromancers are awesome ...

It's been two months and I'm still scared

by jsgoddess , Nov 25 '01
Pros: intense, beautifully written
Cons: scary (is that a con?), sometimes gory
I don't read horror novels, but it's not because I don't like a good scare. I just don't like gore. I really dislike plot complications that ooze.

So it's somewhat surprising that not only did I read Garth Nix's Sabriel, I thought it...

Death is but the next great adventure.

by jakemc413 , Apr 23 '08
Pros: Good plot, great characters.
Cons: hard to get first time through.
Does the Walker choose the Path, or the Path the Walker? This is where the book gets its theme through to the reader. I read the book when I was a young boy. I loved Garth Nix as an author and had just finished reading his "Seventh Tower" series so I ...

An Outstanding Magical Experience

by hillanime , Sep 30 '06
Pros: Great book, incredible fantasy, and a complex and unpredictable storyline.
Cons: May not be able to stop reading until you are finished.
I love fantasy. It’s all I read, and I am constantly searching for new great authors. Well, I’ve found an outstanding one. His name is Garth Nix, and I first came across his works when I read The Seventh Tower series. I immediately fell in love with ...

Sabriel; Hunter of the Dead

by lipglossq , Apr 08 '02
Pros: I did not want to put the book down!
Cons: Frustrating; some magical stuff was not explained clearly
Sabriel is a young girl who goes to Wyverly College, a school for girls. She knows little about her past. Her Father, Abhorsen is a necromancer. He kills the dead who have already died, but they have taken the lives of others so that they may live. He...

GREAT book

by jly86 , Oct 12 '00
Pros: great, exciting, excellent
Cons: too short, sometimes a bit confusing
Because I don't want to risk giving anything away, I won't summarize the plot. I will tell you what I like about this book. Number 1, there's a sequal coming out. If you read this book, I am almost positive you will like it as much as I did, meaning that...

"Death seemed colder than ever before..."

by aeval415 , Oct 28 '04
Pros: Adventure, action, mystery, walking dead...what more could you want?
Cons: You'll immediately have to go buy the next in the series.
If there is one thing I take seriously it is naming my cats. Which is why, when a beautiful orange cat with big green eyes crawled into my lap after trying to disguise himself with some shrubbery for over an hour, I knew I had to find a name for him. ...

Sabriel is Dreafully Spectacular

by munkwunk , Jul 24 '08
Pros: Engaging world and characters, expert writing style, audio book voiced by Tim Curry
Cons: Could be a bit much for minors
During a recent trip to the city library, I stumbled upon an audio book with a fairly unassuming title, by an author I had never heard of: Sabriel by Garth Nix. I am not sure what about the book caught my eye, but after reading the synopsis, and ...

Sabriel-A Wonderful Book

by RoseNews , Jul 18 '00
Pros: Wonderful story with great characters!
Cons: Morbid in some places.
I read this book a few weeks ago. It's really good. It's about an 18-year-old girl named Sabriel who is the daughter of Abhorsen, a necromancer who puts the dead back into their graves. Her mother died when she was a baby. She died also but her father...

Emotional and Epic

by wavyt248 , Feb 28 '00
Pros: Very descriptive
Cons: TOO LONG!
This is the first book by Garth Nix. When you first read the book, there is not much action, and it is a little confusing. Once you get into the book, you never get out! This book cannot be described in one book, and definitely not in a little...

Sabriel: A unique and moving fantasy

by jaderabbit , May 11 '00
Pros: Compelling on every level
Cons: May be too dark for some readers

Sabriel Enchants

by owling owling is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Jun 06 '02
Pros: Engrossing, magical, fantastic
Cons: The protagonist is a little too dumb in the beginning
Rushing water, bright sunlight, the writhing forms of Charter symbols given life by Charter mages--all these things are good, and healthy.

Nighttime, dead flesh, the crackle of Free Magic, Necromancy--these things terrify, kill and bind. Most...

by panguitch panguitch is a Lead on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Sep 27 '07
Pros: It's rivetingly dark, but doesn't worship darkness.
Cons: The romance may be too neat and tidy.
"I have walked in Death to the very precipice of the Ninth Gate." Sabriel has lived most of her life in an Ancelstierre boarding school. Now she's graduating at the top of her class and preparing for university. But news of her father's death ...

Sabriel was a book everyone should read
by tabitha_marie ,Jul 04 '04
Pros: It captivated me from the very start.
Cons: you have to figure everything out yourself-like what is necromany
the book was very exciting and seemed so real to me i read it over and over it has so many exciting twists and turns it seems like you are a detective trying to figure out a case with no clues, leads, or suspects. Garth Nix has done it again and will probably do many more times in these books. Another thing about this book is it has such detail you feel like you are seeing it so clearly you feel like the characters, environment, and everything else are right there with you and you cant stop reading. I would stay up into the early morning because I couldnt put the book down. This book is one of my all time favorite books and so are the other books he has written.

Sabriel Is The Best Book I Have Ever Read
by italiauthrgirl ,Sep 27 '06
Pros: Captivating plot, inspires great loyalty to the characters, very believable fantasy
Cons: The plot starts out very slow--but keep on reading!
This book was at first recommended to me by a librarian in a Spokane public library. I told her that I had a thing for fantasy and she immediately said, "Sabriel. It's the best." So I read the book.

I was soon enchanted by this captivating world where the Abhorsen is forever battling to keep the living and the dead where they belong.

The charactering is profoundly skilled; I was particularly amused by the Mogget, a free magic creature that is forever bound to serve the Abhorsen and his/her family.

This is definitely a book you need to read. If it hadn't been in the fantasy section, I would have believed Garth Nix's story and the whole world that he creates.

I would also recommend Lirael and Abhorsen, who in turn are books of equal merit.
