An Epic Tale of Discovery, Politics, Religion, Loyalty, Betrayal, and Love

by captaind captaind is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Sep 15 '03
Pros: Immense scope, vast and complex, brilliantly realised characters and plot
Cons: Fairly liberal use of obscenities
Shogun is a story of immense scope, power, and emotion by one of the finest historical novelists of our time, James Clavell. I think this was the first book of his I read (though it may have been Taipan, and I’ve re-read it several times since ...

Shogun: James Clavell's triumph

by tomgray , Jan 15 '00
Pros: Fabulously engrossing historical novel and romance, riveting political intrigue, indelible characters and scenes.
Cons: All good, even outrageously great, things must come to an end.
Let's put it this way: Shogun is 1,211 pages long, and that is not one too many. I've read it at least twice, and will get back to it again one of these days.

The basic plot outline is simple enough. Clavell spins for us the story of...

Shogun: The Best Book Ever

by Emily6282 , May 09 '00
Pros: wonderful story
Cons: what's there not to love????
A book is an attempt by an individual to clearly express his or her thoughts, ideals, and philosophies to the general public. Through the use of a clever plot and interesting characters the author’s imagination temporarily becomes reality for the...

It is my KARMA to be Shogun!!!

by quipowerty , Jan 13 '04
Pros: Beautiful story, exotic culture, a strict code of honor, and plenty of swashbuckling samurai.
Cons: It’s very long, so readers may want to take their time.
Shogun, writteny by James Clavell, is set in about the year 1598, when the great peasant-King Hideyoshi died in his sleep, leaving two powerful feudal lords to squabble over the Japanese nation. At the same time the Europeans arrived on its shores in ...

Gives new meaning to the phrase "Heads will roll"; very very interesting read

by sshelle Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Sep 08 '02
Pros: descriptive without getting bogged down in too many details
Cons: often Japanese phrases aren't translated after the first time they are used in the book
Not being much into Asian culture myself, I picked this book up out of curiosity, after hearing several references to it over the years. I like reading historical fiction because it enables you to experience history as close to first-hand as possible....

Possibly the best fiction book ever written.

by nate555 , May 31 '02
Pros: Action, Adventure, character development.
Cons: There are NONE!
That title says alot, but I truly believe it is true. There have been many fiction books over the ages, but none have been quite as popular or as lasting as Shogun. This is the first installment of the Asian Saga, a set of books that take place over a...

Shogun: A Story Of Epic Proportions

by glock64 , Jul 23 '01
Pros: Deep, thought-invoking, interesting
Cons: It ended a few pages short
When I read the first few pages of Shogun, I wasn't too interested. But later on, I became more involved with the story, it's so deep!

To summarize, Sea Pilot John Blackthorn wants to be the first to circumnavigate the globe. He lands in...

Shogun-James Clavell's Work of Art

by chris_gylock , Feb 11 '00
Pros: Excellent reading, but also a learning experience
Cons: 1000+ page book
James Clavell's "Shogun" is a wonderfully written book set in Japan. The story chronicles an English sailor's travels to Japan, where he is treated very poorly until his value is realized. He soon becomes the first westerner to become a...

Shogun:long but worthwhile

by Brianbb18 , Mar 04 '00
Pros: Accurately portrays Japanese culture.
Cons: Too long
If you enjoy history, James’s Clavell’s well written masterpiece, Shogun is a must read. Reading the book brings ancient Japan to Life. The reader is sucked into the culture of Japan and leaves with fairly accurate knowledge of Japanese history....
