With the exception of its five megapixel Real Imaging Processor the DSC W5/DSC W15 is almost identical to its big brother, the very popular (7 megapixel) Sony DSC W7. The Sony DSC W5/DSC W115 was designed to appeal to veteran snap-shooters and family ...

An Incredible Find For The Price

Pros: Great image quality. Good AF assist light that WORKS. Price for what you get.
Cons: Awkward hand grip. Limited f-stops in manual mode. Need PRO stick for best movie mode.

Pros: very good outdoor/bright light performance

Sony Cyber-Shot = Great Buy

Pros: Macro, Fast, Adv. Settings, Quality Prints
Cons: Videos don't have sound.
My first digital camera, a 2 mega pixel Sony Cyber-Shot, was a high school graduation present from my Dad. I loved my camera and, for 2 MP resolution capabilities, it produced great photos. Five years down the road I decided to make an upgrade. I was ...

Sony Cyber-Shot Digital Camera
by nausscb ,May 25 '06
Pros: Internal memory, efficient on batteries, good zoom, lots of functions for specialty pictures
Cons: Lens can get stuck after hard use (10 months), but Sony fixes it under warranty.
I have had 2 of these cameras. They have been great for me thus far. I like Sony's cameras because they are easy to use and understand. The zoom functions are great and the very large (2.5") LCD screen gives the user much to look at on the back of the camera.

Not a bad camera overall
by russiand ,Jan 03 '07
Pros: Sturdy, well built case. Menu system is simple and intuitive. Great outdoor performance. Viewfinder.
Cons: Photos often blurry indoors! LCD makes quality of shot hard to tell.
I have had this camera for a year and a half now. Overall it is a pretty good camera and outdoors it takes awesome pictures. I have had blurring issues with it on occasion and am not sure if my hands shake or the auto focus function is not working quite right. The bad thing is that when looking at the LCD it is hard to tell whether you took a blurry picture or not. Most of the issues have been when taking pictures indoors. That said I have taken some very beautiful photos with this camera as well. Additionally I had this camera repaired under warranty, because the selector wheel on top was malfunctioning. It would start changing modes on its own. In general I would recommend Casio or Cannon instead of this camera.

nice point and shot
by wladston ,Mar 18 '07
Pros: good resolution, good price
Cons: No manual mode, no battery report in minutes.
Nice camera. Has a intuitive system that explains you what the icons mean.

Good resolution, strong flash. Lacks the manual mode, to adjust exposure time and aperture, but for the average point and shooter it should be a great camera.

I hate having to press a top button in order to view the photos. Also, the system doesn't say how many minutes you have left on the battery, only shows an indicator.

When taking face pictures, the flash sometimes gets too bright for the photo, this is something I don't like about it too.

Fantastic Camera
by kmac_17 ,Aug 21 '05
Pros: Awesome picture quality Very easy to use Awesome batt life Super fast start up
Cons: Sometimes the "shakey" icon comes on even when using tripod Flash no grunty enough
Owned the cam for about 3 weeks now, actually swapped for this over the ixus50 as there was too mch noise. very happy with cam. saturation and contrast is awesome and outdoor shots are amazing. I love the options to increase sharpness, saturation and contrast. I find that the manual mode is limited with only 2 aptre settings to choose from but in contrast a variety of shutter speeds.

Great Second Camera
by jwhutson ,Nov 27 '05
Pros: Quick, nice build quality, good battery life.
Cons: Manual controls and fexibility virtually useless.
When I ditched my Coolpix (plastic door fell off rendering the camera useless) I bought a W5 as a stopgap camera. The Sony has a better build quality than the Nikon, and unlike the Nikon the images are free from artifacts. The camera is easy to use, and most of the frequently used controls intuitive. The manual controls are confusing, and not convenient to use. This is a point and shoot camera. The images are a little soft, but generally the color is pleasant, i.e., a little oversaturated. I find the images soft, great for people but only okay for buildings and landscapes. I do not use Sony's software so I can not evaluate it. I get very quick downloads from the camera into Adobe Photo Elements 4.0. I use Sony's proprietary batteries as some older Kodak batteries did not perform well. Flash photograph is much better than the Coolpix, more powerful, better focusing, and better exposures. This is a great camera to take with you, in a briefcase or cycling bag.

amazing camera!
by lailafc316 ,Nov 16 '07
Pros: excellent quality.
Cons: non-flash photos are terrible quality and flash is really long.
My parents bought this camera a few years ago to upgrade to a digital camera. It wasn't until recently that I've started using it. I've been using it for about a year now for many reasons. At first, I expiremented with the camera to see what type of shots I could take and the quality of the pictures. The quality is quite amazing and I get lots of compliments for my photos. I also photo shop all of my photos with adobe photo shop and many tell me that my pictures look professional.
The thing that irritates me the most is that sometimes the pictures isn't taken right away when you hold the button. It takes several tries for me sometimes. Also, when you take flash off, the pictures can turn out really blurry unless you hold the camera extremely still. Also, the battery life is terrible. I will put in a brand new pair of double A batteries, and it'll only last less than an hour, sometimes way less.

Good camera for the price
by tinkui ,Aug 10 '05
Pros: Big viewable LCD, preview feature can skip if another shot wants to be taken
Cons: Flash is not too powerful
I bought this camera to replace an older 3 MPixel one I had. What convinced me about this camera was the it was within my budget and that the screen was BIG!
The camera works very well. It takes pictures at good speeds and it can skip the "preview" feature in case you want to take another shot right away.

Now that I have this camera with a big LCD, trust me, I doubt I'd ever gop back to small LCDs again! It makes a world of difference.

Amazing picture quality
by concadmom ,Dec 16 '05
Pros: compact, great pictures
Cons: red eye reduction delay, complex settings
We purchased the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W5 after much research. We have two young preschoolers, and we were looking for an easy to use, compact, high quality digital camera.

We have had this camera for two months. I am amazed at the picture quality. The 5.0 megapixels make a big difference!

I am a little disappointed in the complexity of this camera. There are several setting that I still haven't mastered. I have looked at the book several times, but it is a little harder to use then I thought it would be when I purchased it.

Additionally, there is a picture delay when using the red eye reduction feature. So the camera takes the picture a second or so after you snap it. This has meant we have lost pictures of our fast moving young kids, or pictures have been fuzzy because they moved and were no longer in focus.

Overall, I am happy with this camera and would recommend its purchase to others. For the price, I think it is a good value.

Good camera, great pics, fast, small, and terrific screen
by sestaats ,Dec 11 '05
Pros: Clear pics. Fast to shoot and recover. Very good battery life. Very good display.
Cons: Tough to shoot and zoom with one hand. Mode Wheel can turn while shooting.
Easy to use and takes great pictures and ok video (with good light).
We bought it for our summer vacation. Took ~ 700 shots, deleted ~ 200 from the large display and menu on the back of the camera. Uploaded 500 pics through picasa (free from Google and great for storing, burning cds, correcting red eye, cropping, etc). Printed 200 terrific shots for the album.
It has suffered at least to drops to the street and suffered the loss of a small piece of chrome trim. Good durability.
Takes very nice pictures often. It gets tricked by moving subjects at close range. Recovers quickly from flash. Battery life is excellent with the rechargeables. Keep a pair of alkalines on hand also.
