Cons: Unnatural 28 degree heel out twisting action extremely hard on my knees and ankles.

I have had poor luck with the Speed Play X-1 pedals. The 28 degrees of heel out rotation to disengage is unnatural to my knees. Every time out I have come home with a strained patella tendon. I have also strained a tendon in my ankle. These injuries have cost me approximately 1 month riding time over the past 6 months.

I have had knee surgeries on both knees. I also suffer from ITBS when I ride using SPDs or other clipless pedals. The free float in these Speedplays is great! It's a litle hard to get used to the float when climbing, but once you do it's no problem. The maintenance is simple enough. A quick cleaning after each ride. I use a thin coat of oil about every month or so as well.
