Pros: Works well, inexpensive Cons: May not work well with older tvs
About five months ago our VCR broke and we decided to upgrade to a DVD and Video combo. After spending some time researching price and reviews, I settled on this version for $110. We have been using it heavily for five months and are happy with the ...
Pros: Price, Sleek Design, Full Feature DVD/VCR Combo with Toshiba reliability. Cons: 3 month Parts warranty = durability. I scratch my "3" durability rating on update.
See bottom for update... I recently purchased a Toshiba 46" HDTV (see my review) and needed a DVD player to go along with it. I eventually decided to go with a DVD/VCR Combo for space saving reasons because my TV has a small storage space for AV ...
Pros: Sound, Display, easy to use remote Cons: Doesn't like to turn off
I bought this machine in June 2004 and for the most part have been very happy. The VCR has very good playback, fast rewind, good picture and is pretty easy to record with. I have only recorded 2 movies with it so far on SLP and they have turned out ...
Pros: ease of installation & use, auto clock set, JPEG slideshow mode Cons: no universal remote, remote button layout
I bought this combo unit for a gift, and it's used to play rental videos. Combo units are definitely the way to go for a number of situations: - Televisions (older, mainly) that do not have separate audio/video inputs. With only an antenna ...
Pros: Attractive design, space saving and convenient. Cons: "Whirring" noise on playback of DVDs, now they won't even play.
For the most part I've been very happy with this DVD/VCR combo. I bought it for use in my bedroom, as I only had a VCR before. I patiently waited for the prices to drop...when I first wanted one they were close to $400! I have 2 DVD players, a ...
Pros: It was free Cons: Constant freeze up with DVD
Received for free in a give away, now I know why. Constant freeze ups with DVD, even with new movies right out of the package. Always starts to happen after the 1st 1/2 hour or 45 minutes (just as you are getting into the movie). VCR not all that great either (picture wise in play back). Buying a new one tomorrow (different brand too) as I have watch my last freeze frame DVD!
Felt Great To Drop This Unit in Our Dumpster by saturnfan ,Apr 18 '05
Pros: Small size - Less wiring than separate VCR & DVD Cons: Disgraceful remote - Hard to program - Died quickly
After suffering for 14 months with the hard to use remote and awful VCR programming, the playback head went bad on the VCR putting lines throughout the picture.
Tried cleaning tape and then opened unit to clean. Even though we never used rental tapes, the head had gone south.
Warranty is only 90 days labor. Even with my Visa gold double warranty, I'd have had to pay the labor which would have been equal to the replacement cost.
Didn't even bother calling Toshiba since the awful remote and difficult programming made me not want this unit back anyway.
Put in separate DVD and VCR components. What a difference! I can now see the remote buttons and easily program a timed VCR recording.
Unreliable DVD Playback by rdallemolle ,May 18 '05
Pros: small footprint for 2 functions - decent remote - VCR is good Cons: reader freezes - movies on DVD are no fun to watch
This is the second Toshiba unit I've had, and it's a replacement for one that I returned under warranty because the DVD's motor would get so loud sometimes that it could be heard easily over the sound of the movie that was being played.
This one works fine as a VCR. During DVD playback, however, it works fine for maybe an hour, then begins to hesitate, and finally freezes up and displays a still picture. You can get it to play for a few seconds by hitting rewind, then play; but once it starts freezing, you might as well turn it off for a couple hours before trying it again. This happens even with brand-new, retail DVDs, although it is worse with rentals.
Haven't had this trouble with the DVD reader on my computer system.
Works great for about an year by rchatto ,Nov 28 '05
Pros: Good picture, remote works without pointing to the unit. Cons: Very non standard remote, The unit will fail in about an year.
I just throw out my second Toshiba DVD/VCR combo. First one was a SD-V291, it lasted for 13 months then DVD picture start freezing. Second one was a SD-V392 and it start freezing in only 9 months, the warranty on this one was for 3 months.
First the problem start after using for about 1 hour or so then slowly start freezing sooner, finally it doesn't play the movie at all.
This time I bought a Sony DVD/VCR combo, There are only two reviews, both are one or two star with similar complains, not enough review to judge from.
I do like to add that $30 Yamakawa DVD player in kids room running for last two years with no problem.
If Sony breaks, My next buy will be separate DVD and VCR from cheap manufacturers.
GREAT DVD PICTURE PLUS VERY GOOD VHS by mayfran ,Feb 07 '05
Pros: Beautiful picture DVD and VHS. Excellent sound. Easy to use. Cons: Minor complaint is remote
I purchased this machine at Best Buy for $99.99 in early January. I previously had a Toshiba 2-disc DVD player which was and still is a terrific machine even after several years of use, but I wanted a combo unit to go with my new Sony LCD TV. The picture quality of the SD-V392 is terrific. I am using the component connections and the DVD picture is absolutely beautiful. Skin texture and colors are lifelike. I just can't imagine they could look any better. The zoom and fast forward/reverse modes work flawlessly . The VHS picture also looks great and the machine records and plays back perfectly. The sound comes through on both the TV system and my home theater system beautifully. I bought this machine because I was happy with my older Toshiba player which is now connected to a second TV and working perfectly. At $99.99 I consider the SD-V392 a real bargain. My only complaint is minor and that is the remote. The mode and selection buttons are a little small for me. However, the old remote from my older Toshiba controls the SD-392 so its really no problem.
Pros: You must be kidding! Cons: Too complex for just recording
This is by far the worst product I have had the displeasure to use. In recording a dvd from a tape I was prompted to have a title before finalizing; which I do not need. The manual is not user friendly in that you can look up the specific item you want so appantly Toshiba thinks you should read the entire book. I do not want to read the book; just record a dvd and put the title on the dvd with a stick on label. Do not buy this unless you intend to be in the same frame of mind as the idiot that made it.
