Pros: Rich and roasty but not overbearing, wonderfully chocolatey, drinkable. Cons: Limited distribution area.
Originally, I wrote a short review of Yuengling Porter back in May of 2000. That review weighed in at a mere 177 words, less than half of what my reviews tend to run these days. I am becoming long in tooth and words both, it seems. Still, this is a very...
Pros: An incredibly smooth and flavorful porter; a great introduction to dark beer. Cons: Limited distribution area - but not for me! I live in Pennsylvania! Hooray!
I honestly couldn't drink another Yuengling lager. I swear. As resident of Philadelphia, this Pottsville-based brew has been at every barbecue, every Christening, every funeral repast, and every birthday party I've attended over the past 10 years ...
Pros: Very drinkable, rich, delightful chocolate taste and a velvety roast. Cons: Short supply/limited distribution outside of NJ/PA.
But before I write my review, let me say that you all need to get the straight skinny on this beer from "bruguru." MY EPINION: Any of my friends (and many of my enemies, for that matter) will tell you that I like to drink. Doesn't make me an ...
Pros: great introductory dark beer Cons: often overlooked in favor of new beers
Many of the beers I review tend to be artisinal or intense. It becomes a hard sell because I know that a lot of people that are not into beer geekdom will not really understand. I have seen people's distorted facial expressions when drinking a...
Pros: my favourite beer Cons: can't find it anywhere
This has been my favourite beer ever since I first tried it a decade ago. There was a vegetarian cafe where I lived that used to serve it and I, youngster that I was and new to being able to have a beer in a restaurant, didn't realize at the time that...
Pros: Best dark beer for the money Cons: Limited distribution area
Year's ago at family reunions around the Pottsville, PA area, Yuengling's Porter was always on hand. Having just turned legal drinking age, all my relatives encouraged me to try this dark looking beer. Maybe they thought I would spit it out or just say...
Pros: Delicious and nutritious Cons: hard to find when you cross the continental divide.
Pennsylvania may be pretty backwards in many ways, but its claim to Yuengling Brewery may someday atone for its downfalls. Yuengling is one of the best brands of beer in the country, and though ALL of their beers are delectable my personal favorite is...
Pros: cheap for a good beer Cons: available in limited geographic area
Yuengling Porter is not as popular as Yuengling Lager or Yuengling Black and Tan, but it is, nevertheless, an excellent beer. It is not an everyday beer for me, but it does provide a refreshing change of pace from Yuengling Lager or the various pilsners...
Pros: I guess it's a good starting point for someone weaned on Bud Cons: Thin on flavor, not a bargain anymore, especially compared to the competition
I'd been drinking Yuengling since I was of age- I'm within the local distribution area, so it was always cheap and a a notch above it's lesser competition. I used to think it was pretty good, until all the microbreweries started springing up and...
Pros: It's all good. Nearly opaque, with a creamy beige head, a wonderful aroma...it's all good. Cons: Yuengling Porter is available only regionally in the PA area.
Yuengling Porter is a great any time beer. I have been enjoying it now for 2 years. If you are used to a light beer, or even a "regular" pale lager, this will take some getting used to...a beer with some actual flavor. And this beer has it in spades. Let's get one thing straight: I really don't like Yuengling Lager. I can tolerate it if I have to at social occasions where I have no choice (weddings, for instance). But I would always rather have a Yuengling Porter. Always. And this is one of the few that - to my palate anyway - taste the same from the bottle or the tap. Thank god a local club here has this on tap! But, bottle or tap, no appreciable difference, just a full bodied beer with a full bodied taste. This ale goes well with any barbecue meats and also pairs well with wings, pizza, even Hot dogs. You just can't go wrong with this brew. Do yourself a favor: pretend it's a lager and give it a chance...drink 12 or so. You won't be able to go back to those watery beers, I swear!
Pros: Deep taste - you know you're drinking beer. Cons: The stuff costs about $6.50 a 6 pack and hasn't even been shipped very far.
As one who disdains the sorry excuses for beer produced by the major marketers - that taste is like English cider - I was excited to discover the Yuengling Porter. I do enjoy a fine Pale Ale, but this a is real beer. The full body - slightly tart - roasted taste is similar to a stout. Fortunately I live 6 miles south of the Mason-Dixon Line and can have all I want - in moderation (though for sheer caloric intake it beats eating a bowl of cereal).
