Pros: Handling, grip, utility & handiness, general competence Cons: road and engine noise The Bottom Line: Among the most intelligent cars available, this Subaru is the David among all the hulking Goliaths, a down-to-earth machine with nearly everything most people require in a car.
The 1996 Legacy Outback is a most trustworthy car, dependable and tough, and it just won't get stuck ...

Pros: Peppy fuel pinching 4 cylinder engine for an AWD, superb all wheel drive train Cons: Poor quality wheel bearings, axles, timing belts, cheap interior, road noise, The Bottom Line: I got a divorce. After a 20 year love affair with them they took all my money and left me high and dry with the kids standing by the roadside.
I have been an avid Subaru Owner for almost 20 years now and for the past 15 years both my wife and I drove Subaru's. I have put around 250,000 miles on previous Subaru Wagons with only changing the timing belts every 60,000 miles like clockwork. ...

Pros: Cruise Control Cons: Acceleration, No Luxuries
In 1996, my family purchased the Subaru Legacy LS of that year. We did not put much thought into it and made a poor choice.
The Subaru Legacy has some nice features. Full time all-wheel drive is a nice thing to have. As is one of Subaru's...

Pros: Legendary Subaru reliability, uncomplicated all-wheel drive, adequate power, roomy interior and trunk Cons: Power window toggle switches less convenient than rocker switches, auto down only driver's window The Bottom Line: Equally at home in the Sun Belt as in the Snow Belt, the All-Wheel Drive Subaru Legacy gives you the control of pure traction without gimmicky "traction control".
Southern Californians are a strange lot. Pull up in the driveway in just about any SUV and you're greeted with a chorus of "Cool!". Show up in your all-wheel drive Subaru Legacy sedan and those same friends and relations will take one look at the ...

Pros: safe, fun, roomy, powerful, reliable Cons: could use a better sound system
In 1996 I purchased this vehicle not having previously owned a Subaru. I must say that i have really put this vehicle through its paces. I ski, mountain bike and take road trips regularly. This vehicle has never broken down once, or given me any kind...

Pros: safe, handles great, cargo room is excellent Cons: more leg room, a little expensive to fix
We bought a 1996 Legacy Outback two years ago now. We have been nothing but pleased since. My wife and I are not car experts so expect this review to be the layperson's version of car reviews.
Everything positive you read about these...

Pros: Smooth ride, Lots of Storage Room Cons: Not great on gas
Those of you familiar with my 1995 Plymouth Neon troubles should now rejoice: though the demise of the vehicle was horrible and unfortunate (rear-ended and totaled by a beginner driver), I have a new replacement car at her expense, a 1996 Subaru Legacy...

Pros: very competent-to-excellent in almost every area, great value Cons: poor stereo, picky ergonomics (?)
Synopsis:
We have had this ’96 Outback since new. I would heartily recommend this over a car-based SUV and to those looking for a mid-sized station wagon. We have a '94 Grand Cherokee, which my mother couldn’t quite handle. It was a bit...

I purchased this vehicle for its all-weather handling capabilities. So far, it has performed without a hitch on slippery surfaces and is a pleasure to drive.

Pros: Reliable, decent mileage, AWD Cons: Not much power The Bottom Line: This car is perfect for anyone wanting a good, reliable, all-around car for all seasons.
I bought this Legacy Wagon used with 62,000 miles on it. Now I have about 80,000 miles on it and am quite satisfied. I bought this car because I needed a car for carpooling with 2 other people. I was previously driving a Nissan Pickup and there was ...

Pros: Ultimate reliability, low cost of operation Cons: Seems to get more than its share of dents
Weak engine The Bottom Line: No other car I have ever owned has come close to the reliability of this vehicle. It still drives well with no indication of old age rattles.
I have put in 118K on the '96 Subaru Legacy Brighton wagon that I purchased when it was new. The total cost of repairs for this time has been $147 for a faulty brake switch! (This excludes normal maintenance and regular replacement items like brakes,...

Pros: Great All Wheel Drive, Handling, sporty feel. Cons: Expensive to fix and maintain. Little dealership support. The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car to a person who frequently drives on wet or slippery roads. Great traction!
We bought our Subaru wagon used. It was 7 years old, and we were the second owners. It had 79,000 miles when purchased. We sold it with around 130,000 miles. We bought this wagon to use as a daily driver and to take our dogs around in. It had ...

Pros: Dependable, good value for the price, holds its resale value Cons: Not especially "sporty" unless you get the Outback version, not much back seat legroom
The Subaru Legacy is a habit with my family. We have owned four Subaru station wagons, two of which were 1982 models and thus, pre-Legacy. Subaru makes one of the best automobiles one the market, a real value. We still have one of the two 1982 models,...
