FORESTER TEST DRIVE

by jpcjpc
Sep 14 '99

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: roomy, great back seats, AWD, inexpensive!
Cons: a little strange to drive at first.

I recently test drove the Subaru Forester to compare it to the Outback Sport, Audi A4, and some other vehicles.

The Forester is truly unique. When you drive it, your mind is somewhat confused as to what sort of vehicle you are in. It...

A real road warrior

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very comfortable seating, great gas mileage, great visibility, enough power to handle the hills.
Cons: Poor cup-holder placement, cargo area windows don't open; flimsy keyless remote
The Bottom Line: A great buy for a mini SUV. Low maintenance, good mileage

We bought our 1999 Forester S new in October 1998. Since then, we have taken it into the Canadian Rockies-up to Jasper, down the icefields parkway, into Banff, the Glacier and Yellowstone. The only repair needed: a flat tire in Yellowstone. We also too ...

Perfect for me so far!

by mrhonda

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Styling, storage space, AWD, jam packed with standard features, fun to drive
Cons: Check engine light comes on for no reason, rear windows not tinted, other small querks
The Bottom Line: It's an SUV, a luxury car, a sports car, an economy car, and a truck all at the same time! It's a Forester!

It all started when a friend of mine bought a Forester back in 2000. I haven't always liked the Subaru brand and to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to it back then and thought it was just another querky Subaru. This changed when a second friend ...

Forester at 1 year (added notes at 1.5 , 6 & 8 years)

by jack49a
Nov 04 '00 - Updated Sep 08 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: comfortable, powerful, mileage
Cons: interior lights
The Bottom Line: I like it and highly recommend it if this type of car fits your needs. I've been driving it for over 8 years now.

I've had this car for a bit over a year now. And I am very happy with it but before I get into that I should say something about why I bought it. Why I bought: I was looking for a small and reliable car. My first thought was a Toyota as I had ...

No More Worries

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: The benefits of an all-wheel drive SUV, but a car's comfort and practicality
Cons: Back seat a little cramped.

Here's the short version: I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Read on for a longer review of this great little SUV.

First off, I'm a mother, not a mechanic. So don't expect any talk here about transmissions, drive trains, gear ratios, carburetors,...

Low maintenance SUV

by spacepup

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Easy handling, low maintenance, good mileage
Cons: Recall on the braking system, not as much cargo/passenger space as the larger SUVs

I've had my Subaru for a little over 14 months now and I'm comfortable in recommending the vehicle to those that are looking for a compact SUV. My prior vehicle was an Explorer (bought the first year model and was it ever a lemon!) and I was somewhat...

Subaru Forester L

by jprice
Jul 12 '99

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fit, Finish and Price and Comfort
Cons: Load Space and Rear seating

The Forester L is a SUV built upon a Legacy frame. Competition is the RAV 4, Honda Oddsey, and the like. All-wheel drive and ground clearance make this an excellent vehicle in inclement weather. There are numerous cubbyholes and storage...

Safe As a Car, Safe as An SUV

by DavidGriffiths
Oct 03 '99

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very Safe, Excellent Traction Control, Lots of Room, Lower Price than Many SUVs
Cons: Mushy Brakes, Burns more Gas (Compared to a Car)

Sounds contradictory, but it isn't. With regards to crash tests, most SUV's meet truck safety standards. But SUV's typically have better traction and braking systems, which gives an edge when trying to avoid an accident.

The Subaru Forester...

Best car I've ever owned

by slinky7
Jan 24 '00 - Updated Jan 26 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: truck-like capacity and car-handling. Great in snow!
Cons: gas hog, poorly-designed cup holder

This is the best car I've ever owned.

I've owned compacts and pickups by Nissan and Honda, and driven a slew of other cars. I knew I wanted something that handled like a car but let me carry all my toys (bikes, skis, canoe, etc.) and had...

Space, Economy, Safety and Handling

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safey, Handling, All wheel drive, Power, Head room, cargo space, price,
Cons: front cup holder

We love our 1999 Forester that we bought new in May 1999 and have now owned for a year. It handles like a dream! Which means it corners beautifully, as opposed to feeling 'mushy' and unstable like a Ford Explorer does when you try to take a corner at a...

Pros: Too Many To List
Cons: Small Rearview Mirror.

Sneak Peak of My Thorough Overview....

STEERING WHEEL: Rack-and-pinion steering. This means the wheel won't flip your car with every little touch. It's very steady, and safe feeling. It's all about control. You feel totally, 100% in control....

I love this car

Jan 12 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: All Wheel Drive, safety features, handling
Cons: not worth worrying about

Before I got my Forester, I had a Honda Accord that I didn't think could be topped. But the Forester is even better than the Accord, and most of that is because of the safety features it has. We live in Maine, and the All Wheel Drive is a real plus--you...

I recommend the Forester

by Zippygirl
Nov 20 '99 - Updated Jan 15 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Easy to handle, reliable
Cons: Could use a little more carrying capacity
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this trouble-free, comfortable, easy-to-drive vehicle to anyone who doesn't need a lot of space. My next car will be a Subaru.

Updated: 15 January 2002: My next car will definitely be a Subaru. This car has not given me a moment of trouble. She handles beautifully on ice and snow, and deals pretty well with mud and muck.

Not a car, but not an SUV either - thankfully!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good height, visibility, comfortable to drive
Cons: Back seat is a little small.

We were about to have a baby and decided that getting in and out of the 2 door '91 Honda Civic just wasn't going to cut it long term. So off we went...

We knew we didn't want an SUV - too big, too much fuel, too hard to park - but we did like...

Great SUV if you don't need service!

by mickie79
May 27 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Drives like a car, decent gas mileage, great in the winter
Cons: Subaru service, a few minor design flaws, tire durability
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the Forester, but I caution you about the tires and the service.

I bought my 1999 Forester LE in October 1999 after a lovely man getting his voice mail totaled my Acura (yes, I'm still bitter, but that's another story...). I wanted safety, reliability and good gas mileage since I drive 40+ miles a day to work....
