Love them Swedes and their S40!

by scmrak scmrak is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50
May 09 '01 - Updated May 29 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: superb handling, economy, storage, quality-control
Cons: smallish back seat, some design quirks
The Bottom Line: Did midlife crisis hit while the kids are still small? Can't fit whole the family in a Miata? then the S40's for you!

The route from Austin, Texas to Houston drones along four-lane divided highways past or through the middling-sized towns of Bastrop, Columbus, and Katy -- and (according to Z. Z. Top) Texas' most famous city: Lagrange. That is, you follow that boring...

My thoughts on my new 2001 Volvo S40

by katiemccann Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safe and relatively inexpensive
Cons: a few things that make the car feel like a "cheap" car

I have been driving a new Volvo S40 for about a month now. My #1 priority when buying a car is safety, which is why I chose a Volvo. Despite the fact that the S40 is the "cheap" Volvo, it is loaded with the safety features that Volvo is known...

I love my car

by polar_bear
Feb 15 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: good value in a fun and fast euro wagon
Cons: weird gas guage and small size with a car seat
The Bottom Line: I really think this is a great car for the price, but US pricing is different and it might only be a good buy for some.

I spent six months looking for a car to replace my Saturn that was going off lease. With a baby on the way I really wanted a station wagon for the stroller, diaper bag, groceries and kitchen sink. I tried out virtually every wagon in the 20 to 25K...

Pros: Interior space, ride, performance, reliability
Cons: Big Ticket, small on real values comparitively

Having just returned from another day of amazement at the dealership and while most of the facts are still fuzzy in my mind, oops I mean clear, I thought I would treat the epinion seekers to a an S/V 40 walk and drive.

Europe 1996 was the test...

A True Volvo?

by msafranski
Mar 12 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Compact, sporty, European flair, smooth transmission and Volvo safety.
Cons: Rough at idle, rapid tire wear and brakes wear out too quickly.
The Bottom Line: Stepping out of the Corolla, Civic and small-end GM products, the Volvo provides a safe and sporty alternative. Just be prepared for a bit more maintenance on this little turbo.

With auto manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infinity breaking into the smaller, less expensive market, it was no surprise that Volvo would throw its hat in the ring with the S40 sedan. Small in stature, but loaded with all of Volvo's safety...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safety, Sporty Handling, Turbo, Good Looks (for a wagon), did I mention Safety?
Cons: Nothing major, read for details.
The Bottom Line: If you want a small wagon with lots of safety features and a touch of sport, this is a great choice.

I have owned the V40 for about 4 months now, and put about 5,000 miles on it.
My overall experience has been very positive. Don't listen to the reviewers that
wrote a review based on a test drive.

My buying experience was mediocre at...

Oct 04 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safe, drives well, good leasing price, fun
Cons: Small gas tank, not very passanger oriented.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Volvo S40 to the college age and young families due to it's reliability, value, and fun.

I just got my first new car about 2 months ago, this was a Volvo S40. It wasn't my first choice but considering price tags and other such details it was the most reasonable choice. The car is pretty fun to drive, safe, and good for the college student....

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: safety, good seats, not many car makers make wagons anymmore
Cons: engine noise and vibration is high, fair reliability
The Bottom Line: I would drive other wagons before you buy this one. Though the new 2005 model is totally new.

We bought this car because it was the only wagon we could afford at the time that had side curtain airbags. Over the last 3 years, it has served us pretty well. It rides pretty well, has decent space, nice seats, gets good mileage, and feels pretty ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: quick, well built, inexpensive, cute
Cons: smarty-pants transmission, size

Let me say this up front, I love my 2001 Volvo. The first drive did it for me. I had decided I needed a more ‘adult’ car than my little red cop-magnet and what better way to go ‘adult/yuppie’ than in a little black station wagon? This Volvo-badged...

Pros: Safety, style, engine.
Cons: Rear seat leg-room.
The Bottom Line: An outstanding car. If your considering an Accord or Taurus go drive this car before you get serious about buying anything else. It will change your perspective.

Overall Assessment
The car is comfortable and gets great gas mileage. The safety features are unbelievable - there are 6 airbags and a whiplash protection system. The engine is surprisingly good and has a great balance of gas mileage and power. I...
