GRAND PRIX: Falling Behind the Eightball...

by vara, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
Jul 19 '02 - Updated Apr 21 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Looks sportier than GM counterparts, good handling.
Cons: Rental car styling, disgusting dash, less safety equipment than competition, small reliability problems already
The Bottom Line: Still a good car, but definitely showing its age... if you can wait, buy the 2004 Grand Prix. If not, buy something else.

Let's face it: the family sedan car segment isn't known for being the most exciting one. Four doors. Child seats. Clean Wipes. Yuck. So, the question begs: how does a car company claiming it's "driving excitement" factor into this equation? ...

2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT ... Pontiac does build excitement!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very sporty.  Great paint job.  Many options.  Reliable 3.8 V-6.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: Excellent styling and build quality.  Fun to drive.  Not expensive to fix.  Buy American.

Finally got rid of my wife's 1996 Saab convertible.  What a cash cow.  Everytime that Saab would hick-up, it costs lots of money to fix.  She loved the car more than I.Found a very sporty 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT as a ...

GM in all of its glory

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Front seats, reliability, roominess, decent ride.
Cons: Rear seats, too much cheap plastic, needs a bit more power.
The Bottom Line: If you need a reliable daily driver you won't be bored with, look here. If you want a true sports sedan or are allergic to plastic, look elsewhere.

Have been around and had the opportunities to drive Grand Prix's for several years, my impressions on the most recent, a 2002 Grand Prix GT sedan. Style: I always thought that this body style Grand Prix was one of the better looking cars on the road. ...

Plastic on Wheels - My 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice exterior styling, responsive around town engine, no major mechanical problems yet
Cons: Terribly cheap interior, very poor build quality, lots of road noise
The Bottom Line: Not the worst car out there but not the best. Poor craftsmanship plagues the vehicle from every aspect. Long-term ownership doesn't look like an option.

A Few Good Words...
There are a few things I really like about this car. It was somewhat
of a compulsive buy... our trusty 1994 Dodge Caravan showed signs of transmission
trouble and GM's tempting 0% financing offer was...

GTP. A good mix of sport and luxury.

Mar 17 '07 - Updated Mar 27 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: That BIG supercharged V6! Nice looks, without looking juvenile. Sporty with some luxury features.
Cons: Terrible brakes. No manual transmission available. Front wheel drive only. Sloppy seating. 21mpg.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car to anyone who wants a practical, yet powerful car for a reasonable price.

I purchased my 2002 Grand Prix GTP sedan a few weeks ago. I chose it over a similarly priced 2001 Acura CL Type S. in comparison to the Acura, the Grand Prix just seemed a little more fun to drive! Appearance and Styling The GTP looks fairly ...

Pros: Reliable and comfortable car that hasn't had any major problems
Cons: GM's customer service for vehicle's under warranty
The Bottom Line: A great family car that is safe for your whole family.

I purchased my 2002 Grand Prix from a car rental agency. The car had 26,777 miles on it when purcha ...

I am very unlucky, or Pontiac needs better electrical engineering

by florida-writer
Apr 21 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Outward styling, roomy interior/trunk, 6-cyl. power, driver seat fits 200-plus male, light-sensitive headlamps
Cons: power windows, electrical wiring, questionable electrical engineering, stereo buttons, engine response time
The Bottom Line: Know your real cost: purchase plus repairs. Far lower purchase than Honda or Toyota. Will have to repair electronics. If moody problems make you nuts, don't. Attractive, good power, roomy.

I must start with some personal Pontiac history to convey my conclusions. I have owned two Pontiac vehicles, both with reasonable initial reviews (not excellent, not terrible), the models being nine years apart. I first bought a used Firebird, ...

Sporty fun car!

by paradox1156
Jan 24 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: sporty but still a family car, holds up to crashes, fun to drive
Cons: falling apart at 80k, console backlighting gets hot, radio doesn't support ipods
The Bottom Line: I would defiantly buy this car again, even with it's faults.

I'm on my second Grand Prix, the first one I unfortunately totaled, but that gave me a real life crash test experience and the car definitely meets my safety expectations after hitting a concrete median at highway speeds and coming out without a scratch. ...

70,000 Miles and Counting......from Sunfire to Grand Prix

Apr 09 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Comfortable ride; excellent factory sound system; spacious trunk
Cons: wiper "freeze" a frequent problem with this model
The Bottom Line: Above average comfort--great traveling sedan.

I bought my 2002 Grand Prix new from the dealer and have put about 70,000 miles on it (yes, I drive a lot!). It is basically a reliable car with comfortable seating for five. This is a great car for long trips. The dashboard lights (red/orange glow ...

Grand Prix Excellent Buy

by dz7cs5
Mar 27 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: nearly 30 mpg, fast, handles nice, a fun car
Cons: upper level radio should be better sound
The Bottom Line: The price was right. Have had no problems at all in 6 months of use. It feels brand new with 12,000 miles on it, just needs washer fluid, oil changes

I know a new one is supposed to be released in 04, so this body style is getting a bit old, but the car is still quite a good package. The price is fair, insurance does not kill it, and 0-60 on this supercharged car is great, and I can get 28 mpg on the...

Good Solid Car, poor gas mileage.

Mar 13 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast, Solid, Great Stereo, Heads up display system.
Cons: Poor Gas mileage
The Bottom Line: A great buy, just make sure it is not beat on (have a mechanic)

I have owned my 2002 Grand Prix GTP 40th anniversary addition since it was brand new. I currently have about 60,000 miles on it, a mix of highway and city driving. The GTP model came with a super charged 240 hp v-6, which is still faster than most cars ...

Jul 09 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: great car/engine for the money
Cons: the GTP anniversary edition only comes in Cherry (looks purple to me)
The Bottom Line: We like them!

The P must stand for Purple....it looks purple.
Why did they chose that "dark cherry" color for the anniversary edition..YUCK?! But that is just my opinion we love the cars and you may like the color. We had a 97 white Grand Prix GT and loved the...

Grand Prix GT

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Good looks, comfortable ride, relatively good gas mileage.
Cons: Replaced 3 of 4 window regulators, replaced master brake cylinder since purchase
I purchased a used (34,000 miles) private party, new car trade 2002 Grand Prix GT about 18 months ago. I liked the color, looks, ride and price. It was my first return to American cars after years of owning German and Japanese sports cars and sedans.

All in all, I continue to enjoy the GT---however, I have had to replace 3 of the 4 window regulators (at about $460 each since I didn't purchase the VERY expensive dealer-offered extended warranty at the time of purchase) at my own expense.

Other out-of-pocket expenses have been for a new master brake cylinder and 2 new front rotors.

Otherwise, the car has been relatively trouble free and while I'm thinking of getting something newer, I have no reason pushing me to head to the dealership.

Overall Good Car !

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Handles well. Comfortable. Spacious trunk. Nice looking inside and out. Built-in theft deterrant.
Cons: I cannot think of a single thing that I do not like about this car!
I bought my 2002 Grand Prix with 6000 miles on it. I have had it almost two years now and still LOVE it! It's a comfortable & reliable car that handles very well, especially in the snow. It has a sport suspension, so it doesn't ride really smooth. However, I was rear-ended at 30 miles an hour and pushed into the cars in front of me. My car (and the 1995 Grand Prix that hit me) sustained the least amount of damage. The only problem I have had mechanically is the heat fan broke on level 1 & 2 (no big deal - covered under warranty).
