Unexpectedly refined, shame about the sheetmetal

by mkaresh mkaresh is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10
Mar 09 '03 - Updated Jun 22 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Smooth ride, quietness, interior volume, warranty
Cons: Styling, engine power
The Bottom Line: If it weren't so ugly I'd give it four stars. About as car-like as an SUV gets, and much more spacious than many people assume.

Most people who buy an SUV will never venture off-road or tow a heavy load. They might need the interior versatility of an SUV, and like its image, but they do not need its heavy truck frame. Over the past few years every major manufacturer has ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Inexpensive sport-ute with a classy feel
Cons: Underpowered; seats; door locks prone to freezing up when cold
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a smaller sport utility vehicle, take a test drive in the Santa Fe. You just might buy one.

I recently had a chance to drive a friend's 2003 Santa Fe LX - he's moving to a new city and needed someone to drive his vehicle there. Since it's a 9-hour drive, I was able to get a good feel for the Santa Fe and for the most part came away impressed....

Sep 24 '03 - Updated Apr 20 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Value, exceptional content, driveability, ride, safety features and ratings
Cons: Polarizing looks; rear seats don't fold completely flat; unpadded door armrests
The Bottom Line: A very good value in a mid-size SUV for the average American family. Lots of standard equipment with exceptional build quality.

In Brief: I just bought my wife a Santa Fe LX after spending a month researching and test driving the following additional 2003 models: Kia Sorento EX, Ford Escape XLT, Saturn VUE V6, Suzuki XL-7, Jeep Liberty, Honda CRV, and Subaru Forester. The ...

Pros: Great price. smooth ride.
Cons: Car is a bit on the heavy side.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable. Nice luggage rack. Functional storage.
Cons: An absolute maintainance and service nightmare. Many electrical problems.
The Bottom Line:

Consider a RAV4 or CR-V instead.

I purchased a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe for my wife and it has proven to be a huge mistake. Within two months of purchasing the vehicle we began to have electrical problems. For example if you hit the power door locks, you'd lose all power to the interior ...

Hyundai did it again!

by JenWingo
Dec 06 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Style, comfort, sound, price, standard features, warranty
Cons: folding back seats - nothing other than that!!
The Bottom Line: It is impressive enough for a relative to trade in a Honda for it after experiencing mine. I would recommend for those looking for a lot for a small price.

I traded in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata for a 2003 Santa Fe. I had an eye on the Santa Fe from the time it was first introduced, but was unable to afford it right away. When the opportunity came up, I jumped on it! I sure have been pleased with my decision. ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very safe and reliable. More space than you would think.
Cons: Don't get one with the step up bumper. Not a great snow car.
The Bottom Line: I've been very pleased with this car. I would definitely buy one again, especially because of it's safety and reliability.

We've had our Sante Fe for three years now. When we started looking for an SUV, we wanted something a little bigger than a car, but safer than the rollover prone SUVs. The Sante Fe had high crash test ratings. There is a driver side and passenger side ...

Best value in Compact SUV Space (Believe me - I checked)

by mfauls
Feb 17 '03 - Updated Mar 10 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Unique look, price, comfort, warranty
Cons: Pick-up, Anti-lock brakes is an option (should be standard)
The Bottom Line: Go for it! Good value overall. The roof rack problem was a quirk and it's a lot cheaper than the competition when equipped the same.

OK, here's the deal, my wife has this 2-seater sports car and she keeps crashing into snow banks. So with the blizzard of 2003 approaching, we relegated the 2-seater to summer car duty and got a Santa Fe!

We looked at Jeep Liberty, Saturn Vue...

A Lemon from day 4

by leighsah
Dec 29 '03 - Updated Jan 05 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Nothing. I can say nothing good about the car nor Hyundai.
Cons: Everything. This car has been a problem since the day I got it.
The Bottom Line: Absolutely, positively, DO NOT purchase this vehicle. Hyundai's complete failure to respond to numerous complaints has been astounding.

The car will lurch noticeably while decelerating. There isn’t a noise like the transmission is slamming into gear, but the car will lurch, like I have just manually downshifted from third to first gear while doing 40 mph, except this is an automatic ...

Very happy

Apr 20 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quiet smooth ride, control ergonomics, audio
Cons: Door armrests need padding, a bit more headroom, telescoping steering wheel needed.
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Excellent value, especially with current Hyundai rebates.

I recently purchased a 2004 Santa Fe GLS with the 3.5L engine. I currently have 3000 miles on it and have taken a 2000 mile round trip recently. Overall, considering value and my needs, this vehicle is a perfect fit for me. My requirements were: - ...

Pros: Good sound system, easy to handle, fun to drive.
Cons: Gas mileage could be better. Too much road noise.
The Bottom Line: Great car for the price, can get an SUV for the same price as a car.

I cannot express the extent of my pleasure with my purchase of a 2003 Santa Fe. This car is well designed, performs well, comes with good options and is very flexible. I am repeatedly pleased with the quality and feel of the buttons and levers in the ...

Expensive Maintenance Costs...

by speedytweety27
Apr 26 '05 - Updated Apr 28 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Acceleration, value, a lot of space, good warranty
Cons: High maintenance costs, road and wind noise, open sunroof is too noisy, poor gas mileage
The Bottom Line: I would have done a more thorough inspection on the accessibility of regular maintenance parts that need to be changed. Great Value to begin with.... pay for it later.

I've had my Santa Fe for over two years it is very roomy, has good pick-up, but you can see the gas gauge go down as you accelerate to get on the interstate... When I bought mine they weren't offering the 3.5L yet so I got the 2.7L. The back seats fold ...
