This opinion is based on three separate shipments made from various suppliers in the US to myself in Toronto, Canada. Each time, something a little bit different happened. Unfortunately two of those three surprises were less than pleasant.
Pros: None. Absolutely none. Much lower service level than the Post Office. Cons: Expensive. Unreliable. Poorly trained staff. Arrogant management never admits problems.

Pros: - None! Cons: - High/excessive Surcharge brokerage costs to end customer

I ordered a fifty dollar cell phone off eBay. When it arrived, I got dinged with $32 worth of import charges - of which 84 cents was GST, and $31 was the UPS' brokerage fee.
If they're trying to kill the cross-border eBay market, they're off to a good start.
The UPS website is also misleading/incorrect. It states their brokerage fee for an item of that value is $19. Be wary of trusting their website for reliable brokerage information.
A friend was sending me a parcel from Los Angeles (I'm in Toronto), and after using the "Estimate Cost" feature in the UPS site, we decided that it would be best to ship through UPS since the rates given were reasonable.
But when the parcel was delivered, I had to pay a brokerage fee of $29.96 (around three dollars less than what was charged for shipping). Apparently, this fee was for conducting the parcel through Canada Customs, a highly automated process that should cost UPS less than a dollar (UPS doesn't charge the brokerage fees for express shipping).
Needless to say, I am very disappointed and will never use UPS again.
UPS takes no responsibility, just like the rest of big corporate America by jb49 ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: none Cons: do trust them
Lend me your $1,000 camera and then I lose it. Who's responsible? Obviously, I am. One way or another, I have to replace the camera. I shipped 4 boxes of books to Canada (to myself for my work during a sabbatical in Canada). Three arrived and one did not (just short of $1,000 worth of books). My employer paid for the shipping, so I had no say in the shipping. The boxes weren't insured. So, the big question is who is responsible. UPS will pay $100 (which won't even cover the shipping for replacements). I entrusted UPS with books critical to my work. They lost them. They should be responsible. I still can't quite gather how they managed to lose a box. Ineptness? The even bigger question is just how rampant among corporate America is the ability to avoid responsibility? It seems to be the rule rather than the exception from my experience. How do we fight this trend?
WON'T ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY!!! by don_tomas ,Feb 22 '06
Pros: None that I can think of. Why would anyone pay for this kind of service? Cons: IRRESPONSIBLE, CARELESS, EXPENSIVE- you can pay high shipping fees and lose your merchandise simultaneously!
Made a purchase on eBay and it was shipped from Texas to Canada.
Driver mentioned package was dropped because the box was so badly crushed. It happened to be a digital camera. UPS Canada said it they could not send a rep to inspect but would accept pictures. Was later informed that they would cover repair costs but the process had to go through the shipper. UPS in Texas is saying no because the repairs are higher than the value on the package.
Do they not have a RESPONSIBILITY to deliver something exactly as they received it? They certainly accept their fees. Since when does shipping carefully or repairing shipping damage depend on the value pasted on the box? How do they handle heirlooms (shudder)?
Pros: It's still slightly cheaper than driving to get it myself. Cons: Hidden fees and not so fast
Always hidden fees when sent from US. Twice I have payed the fees at the door only to be sent a bill later saying I own them more. Can't believe people do business with them. I will no longer buy from companies that only ship UPS.
Pros: Shipment tracking Cons: Insane brokerage fees
Not any faster than USPS for most shipments
I've had 2 experiences with UPS shipping to Canada, and I have nothing good to say about either of them. First time I bought bike part (got a great deal on eBay) for US$60. The package got to me in 6 days, and I was home to receive the package, however the brokerage fee was over $800! Both the seller and I tried to contact UPS about the fee, but they refused to do anything about it and eventually destroyed the item. Luckily, I got my money back, but the seller got screwed on that deal. The second time, I ordered some shirts which worked out to US$14.61, just under the limit for a brokerage fee (so I thought). But no, I got home to find a message from UPS saying I owe $19.92 in brokerage fees. I've learned my lesson now, I will not buy from online retailers or sellers that use UPS.
Pros: Tracking of your package through their web-site Cons: Massive brokerage fee
I ordered two books off a US on-line site. I thought I was getting a fantastic deal as I only had to pay a measly US$2.00 plus US$10.00 in UPS standard shipping. I felt good about my purchase until I was burned by UPS with their hidden fees. When the package showed up at my door I had to pay a brokerage fee of $18.75 (plus applicable taxes) for a package valued at only $20. The taxes I didn't mind paying. It was paying such an insanely high brokerage fee that was an eye-opener. Needless to say, with much cheaper alternatives out there (e.g. USPS), do yourself a favor and don't use UPS to ship to Canada, _ever_!
Hidden fees that don't comply with Uniform Commercial Code by freesay ,Jan 30 '08
Pros: Shipping itself is good Cons: UPS brokerage fees are hidden.
I received a bill from UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Inc. for the amount that I did not have knowledge about. A Canadian customer of mine chose UPS Standard to ship a product back to me for repair under warranty, which was stated on the form. I tried to dispute the charge and contacted 4 persons at UPS. They insisted on the charge, so I had to pay. Under Uniform Commercial Code, what makes a bill enforceable to collect is a contract between two parties, the collecting party and the paying parting. The contract can be in writing, verbal, or in action. I did not have the chance to know the charge and I did not have the chance to refuse it. I felt I was unfairly treated. By the way, I am in the US.
poor service for UPS canada by giantpanda77 ,Mar 04 '05
Pros: can't see any Cons: bad bad service
i don't know how UPS canada can survive here without getting sued by any class action, compared with Fedex, their service really poor, to clear the item with same value across customs, FedEx charged much much less (75% less) broker fee than UPS, FedEX have a 24*7 customer service, while UPS only have a 8am-8pm, Mon-Fri service line,
i got charged so much for the so called "broker fee", like day light robbery!!!
UPS brokerage ..... another suprised victim by darkelf_tim ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: delivery was fast Cons: the brokerage fees left a sour taste in my mouth.
I happily recieved my packaged today that came from the States. However, before I could touch it I had to shell out $23 for brokerage fees. Looking at the receipt, The GST for my shipment was only $2.26, which meant UPS charged me $17.30 + taxes for brokerage. Smart readers will figure out that the brokerage charged here is almost half of the value of what I'm shipping in.
Guess I'm going to try to dodge the brown shirts from now on.
Pros: They think like Military Cons: Screw soldiers out of getting awards by holding shipment hostage.
PLEASE READ THIS!!! YOU CAN "SELF CLEAR" YOUR UPS SHIPMENT> I ordered some Military Replacement ribbons from a reputable Surplus store to put on my uniform for when I march in Veterans Parades. UPS Claims I owe 40.21 for these for clearing them. Folks, A broker is a person who clears COMMERCIAL shipments. He or she, among knowing Customs Acts and Regs, Stands in line to get your goods cleared. ALL YOU NEED TO TO IS TALK TO CUSTOMS. Get your docs Faxed, and go to a Customs Office at any International Airport, get it stamped and all you will pay is Duty and Tax. Iwill fight this tooth and nail. They claim they have "Power of Attorney" over personal shipments. DON'T LET THEN GET AWAY WITH IT!! BOYCOTT UPS
THANKS UPS FOR SHOWING HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT VETERANS.
Having used UPS numerous times, i can definitely say they are a bunch of greedy scam artists! Their brokerage fee, or sometimes called entry prep fee is scandalous.I even get billed for items i've paid for and they also have their own collection agency, which is also bogus. It sure has cut down on my eBay shopping. One time, the driver thought i didn't want the parts i bought and paid for, including UPS shipping fees, and they returned them back to to the US. The driver apologized; it was his mistake, and i phoned UPS Canada, and they said i had to phone UPS USA. It was their screw up, but they don't take responsibility for it.Don't use UPS?
Pros: Ubiquitous shipping outlets Cons: Slapdash customer service service
UPS is known as Brown in the States because it is standard, very unexceptional and predictably unremarkable. Here in Canada it does not meet up to those very minimal characteristics -- UPS Canada can't get the simple things done right, much less cope with a border.
Pros: Can't think of a single PRO for such a crappy company! Cons: Too many to list! Can't believe they are still in business.
Got a nice package via UPS for $120 and with a pleasant surprize of $60 that I get to pay for "brokering" wheee Where does that money go? not to improve their service thats for sure!
In fact they have some new policies just to make you life miserable. If you don't have your tracking # they will not give you your parcel that has your name on it EVEN WITH PHOTO ID!!. This is after I drove 45min to get to their depot that I found out they changed their policies.
When I finally did get my packed it had the crap beat out of it!
This is not the first time I have been screwed by UPS but I can guarantee it will be the last!
House in Escrow - Overnight Package Lost by davepl ,May 02 '08
Pros: At least they update their tracking system once a day for overnight packages. Cons: No effort made on their part. No customer service available outside regular business hours.
I was waiting all day for a UPS Red Label overnight package to arrive. All day long they showed it as "out for delivery", until 9PM, at which point it showed as "wrong address".
I verified the address from my receipt, its perfect. And UPS Ground delivers to my house 3-4 times a week. But the overnight driver couldn't find it.
Did they call? No. Did they even try find the place? Who knows. And of course by 9PM they're closed.
Good thing it wasn't a kidney. But if like me you have a house in escrow, I wouldn't rely on these people.
Accidents happen, but a real company makes an effort to live up to things like "Overnight Guaranteed"
Well, tack on another Canadian burned by UPS by gt40mk2 ,Dec 03 '03
Pros: reasonably fast Cons: criminal non-disclosure of what to expect in "brokerage" fees
This is another story just like the other ones here.
I ordered from an unsuspecting individual (that made two of us) in Ohio who hadn't shipped to Canada before. He tried UPS, and when it arrived at my door I had to shell out $45 to the guy.
I placed an order from an online store in the States a few months back, and it shipped by UPS. Well, for this $40 order, I was charged an additional $30ish for "Brokerage Fees". I paid, after being angry, and promptly forgot about it.
Well, this evening, I got home to a "Service Notice" notifying me about a $56.02 charge for an item that I bought on eBay for just over $120. NO MORE.
I WILL NEVER USE UPS TO SHIP FROM THE STATES EVER AGAIN.
I too have learned my lesson by jstein56 ,Aug 23 '05
Pros: none relative to other shipping methods Cons: insane surprise brokerage fees
I shipped an item to Canada via UPS for the first time last week. My customer was hit up with $55 US in fees on two items worth $193 in total.
I pick up the majority of the fees for the customer. I would like to suggest to Canadians that when they ask that a seller not use UPS, they spell out United Parcel Service. It is too easy to confuse UPS with USPS. Similarly, when you ask for USPS shipping, spell out US Postal Service.
A week ago I bought for 44,32 US $ worth of goods from an Ebay store based in the United-States. The company wasn't overcharging me, or so did I think, making me pay 15,12 US $ for the shipping for two items.
When the package got home, however, I was charged 43,88 CAD $ brokerage fees for the items, which is 39,25 US $ with the current rates. All in all, I paid 54,37 US $ only to send the package a couple miles north across the border, which represents almost 123% of the items net value.
The box used to ship is a total wreck, at least the shipper took care of putting some bubble wrap inside, it barely saved its content.
this is the most ridiculous fee. i was just delivered a package that was worth about 100$ and ended up paying 59$ in brokerage+taxes. since when was there some fee where you were required to pay almost 50% of the products worth!?!? definitely never using UPS again.
UPS = The BIG BROWN MACHINE = NO CUSTOMER SERVICE by cook43 ,Nov 22 '05
Pros: Brown trucks are sure nice to look at! Cons: Just about everything else!
It's already been said numerous times but I will say it again. UPS brokerage charges are an absolute scam. Overpriced compared to other shipping companies and even more drastically overpriced when compared to actual brokerage companies that specialize in clearing items.
UPS and customer service are words that simply do not go together. In a nutshell, they don't have any.
Heaven forbid you should have a problem with a shipment as trying to get insurance out of them is like pulling teeth and more often then not your claim will be denied.
I have also just recently learned that most of their delivery guarantees into another country are null and void if there are any customs delays. How cool is that! UPS is going to charge you a ton of money for not only shipping the item, but also to look after clearing it with customs.............but if something goes bad, don't look to us to honour our service guarantees as we just blame customs in your country! UPS offers a guarantee and then has a dozen different ways to get out of it! PERFECT!
Why don't they have ZERO stars??? by bombart ,Apr 25 '06
Pros: great way to waste 2 hours of your day on the phone! Cons: brokerage fee is highway robbery!
I customized shoes at the adidas store in NY and they said they would ship it to me in Toronto free of charge (I paid for the shoes in store) To my suprise and utter disdain I was being charged an $85 C.O.D fee... $34 in taxes and $51 in brokerage fees on an item that is listed as $0 duty!! What can brown do for me? At least they chose an appropriate colour to describe themselves!! Anyways, I called UPS and the lady told me that any item that is being shipped with a CAD $20 or less value will not be charged a brokerage fee for ground shipping. If the item is shipped by air, there is no Brokerage fee (incl in shipping fee). Moral of the story: NEVER USE UPS TO SHIP FROM US TO CANADA!!
Stay clear of UPS for shipping by frspa ,May 24 '06
Pros: tracking system via the internet is interesting in determining the whereabouts of items. Cons: extraordinary fees attached, without prior notice, to any items being shipped from usa.
I have now been "burnt twice" by using ups. Our friends made the mistake of shipping us a gift from Boston. The gift (worth 89.00) cost us 67.00 more upon delivery. A dress recently purchased online, was shipped ups and an cost an extra 55% upon delivery. I would suggest that if buying from the states, even new items, that you determine what shipper is being used beforehand. Anything that I have purchased using fedex has never had a brokerage fee attached. Down with UPS!!!
Pros: None. Average delivery time, nothing special. Cons: HUGE rip off. Brokerage fees almost $50 on a documented NAFTA covered item ($0 duty)
Buying a product from the States that fell under NAFTA, I simply assumed my shipping costs were paid and I was not going to be putting out any more money. Well, UPS made sure that wasn't true. Despite knowing that there was no duty, I was charged almost $50 Can. by UPS to figure out the duty. Yup, they charged my to figure out a duty that they knew was not applicable. I didn't mind having to pay the GST on the product, but having to pay UPS to have them calculate duty on something they know will be duty free because it's been shipped with documentation that it falls completely under NAFTA is ludicrous and, in my opinion, nearly criminal.
UPS doesn't need any more help by bugmenot ,Aug 23 '07
Pros: They ship things. Also, they update their tracking numbers often. Cons: USPS is cheaper in every respect, and just as dependable.
I'd rather just post a picture than describe how I feel about UPS's deceptive, mediocre service. http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=upsstandardvg7.jpg
Pros: None Cons: You name it, they rip off Canadians!!
I ordered some camping equipment which arrived via UPS in three boxes. I was charged $35 for each box even though they arrived in the same shipment and were cleared at the same time. Regardless of the cost UPS automatically adds $35. Somehow, the post office can clear items for only $5.
I recently had an item shipped from the United States to my home in Calgary. When it arrived I was shocked to learn that I owed UPS over $85 in tax and brokerage fees. That is over 1/5 the value of the item and a complete rip off! A couple of years earlier I had a new set of golf clubs shipped from Texas, there again, I was charged outrageous fees of well over $100. What really made me angry is that they left the golf clubs sitting on front porch in plain sight for anyone to steal!
UPS- Brown is also the colour of SH*T by iamfedup ,Nov 23 '06
Pros: There are other companies out there! Cons: Poor customer service, problems happen everywhere, it is how they are dealt with that matters.
UPS has the worst customer service ever! They do not care about their customer. They will not admit their mistakes and when you insist to talk to a supervisor, they put you on hold forever. Being put through to a voice mail and being told they will call back within 2 business days is not my idea of customer service. They are certainly not the only courier company out there. I have had an account with them for 3 or 4 years, but no more. A simple apology is all it would take from them but they are too arrogant for that. Consider yourself warned, when there is a problem, they don't want to deal with it.
Horrible hidden fees possibly worth as much as the package shipped! by dancho77 ,Nov 21 '06
Pros: None. Offers similar to any shipping company.
Potential financial incentive for shippers. Cons: Massive hidden fees.
Lousy customer service which borders on rudeness.
United Parcel Service (UPS) charged me $16 to import an item worth $20 from the U.S. into Canada.
It's possible to reduce this charge by calling UPS by phone and paying all the fees in advance by credit card. Tracking number is required so the item should be en route!
UPS acts as its own broker when shipping items across the border, allowing the company to charge outrageous fees comparable to the price of a relatively cheap package.
First try to get the shipper to use another shipping company. Failing that, review the following page for UPS customs fees:
Note that the following services: UPS Express Plus, Express, and Expedited Services offer to waive the Brokerage Fees. However, keep in mind that these are much more expensive services, and you'll still have to pay taxes on the value of the goods over $20 for a commercial shipment (and $60 for a personal shipment), and note that there are also "disbursement" fees AND a separate fee for COLLECTING the money from YOU! This fee is the one UPS waives when you pay willingly by credit card beforehand.
My advice is to stay away from this cheater of a company.
UPS will blow you away... with ripoff brokerage fees! by slick0 ,Apr 13 '04
Pros: Tracking... not much else. Cons: Same speed as USPS airmail, ripoff hidden charges that you wouldn't be charged with UPS.
I had a package sent from California to here, in Toronto. It took 5 business days exactly. That's not much faster than USPS airmail. It costs more too, but you get tracking and insurance included.
The item I received was marked as a gift worth $10US. I got slapped with $21.34 Canadian for brokerage fees, customs duties, handling fees, taxes, and some other stuff I never heard of. Wow, absolutely ridiculous. AVOID UPS AT ALL COSTS!
Pros: Hummm... they are very successful at making people angry Cons: All of the above with a hint of A lot more
Oh My god ... How can I begging.
Well first off, I didn't get the product I wanted due to lack of information, but that is another story...
I bought 4 little rubber seal that go around the piston of brake calipers...
the part # is very hard to find and I was certain I had found it state side.
I placed my order and got my tracking number from the merchant. Yeah...
once it got to my door I fell on my a$$. the cost per rubber ring is 12$ .. not too bad if you consider they are Brembo brake parts and come with a "premium" price.
I couldn't believe it. 40.08$ custom and tax fees: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTT???
I buy for 52$ of parts + 16$ shipping ... which is somewhat expensive for about .2lbs of merchandise...
+40.08$ UPS Crooked Custom fees...
total: 109$ (let's not forget the 0.65 insurance charge)
OMG now that I have just calculated the total .. I'm even more P1SSED
Pros: Fast shipping to canada trackable. Cons: they are crooks, they need to burn in hell
Ok ive bought many things from the US and have had it shipped using UPS but have stopped using them cuz of their surcharge in brokerage as im in canada. You wanna avoid ups broker and duty i called them up and asked them how to do it and this is what the lady said on the phone to do. ONe ask shipper to mark a value of 15USD. You take the risk of it getting lost or damaged but tell them to pack it very well . UPs has never lost a package of mine. Secondly if its a gift you tell them to mark a value of no more than 40USD. you are allowed up to 60CDN value in a gift. example ur cuzin sends u a a dvdplayer tell them to mark it as a Gift in customs with a a value of 40USD or lower. this will get you accross items from us into canada duty free. MOst shippers on ebay will do this if you explain to them that ups charges insane broker fee's ups rarely looses item or even damages em it all on the packaging.
Pros: nothing nice about UPS and their service Cons: Will not recommend even to my enemy
UPS are getting away with SCAM which they have created and we, the general public are paying the price because UPS are using the parcel and holding us for ransom.
I have order an item from the US, the cost of the item is $17.84 but UPS charges a broker fee of $21.02. Unfortunately I was not home and reject the packages. When call the Customer Rep and they are not there to help but to block any complaints.
I have also send a e-mail to UPS about my complaint but I am sure it will not be answered or resolved due to the Customer Rep's behaviour.
I have verify in the UPS website and found they themselves did not follow their Rates for Customs Clearance into Canada. In there it indicates for vale for duty $0.00 to $20.00 there should be no fee. Even if they convert my value greater than $20.00 the custom brokerage fee should only be $7.00.
I am fighting the principle and I do not like to be ripped off by big guys.
Pros: None Cons: Ridiculous fees. They charge MORE than the cost of the item.
I bought an item from a US company. The cost breakdown:
- $35.50 cost of the item (Vendor)
- $ 5.85 customs charge (Gov't Canada)
- $20.00 brokerage fee (UPS)
- $14.50 shipping (UPS)
- $ 4.25 COD fee. (UPS)
Total cost: More than $80
What kills me is that they tried to charge $4.25 for collecting the money from me!
I refused to accept delivery of the item and sent it back to the vendor for a refund.
Pros: None! Cons: Many..... would never ever ever use them
A gift for $21 was sent over a month ago to me from the US. I have been using there tracking system (which is pretty much useless) and have now contacted them on several ocassions. My $21 Canadian gift has been sent to the wrong address in BC. When they finally decided to deliver it... they wanted $25.06 in brokerage fees. Since when do we pay duty etc. on a gift???? Also on the several occasions that I have contacted me I have got lip service.... someone will contact you tommorow etc. Well I'm still waiting for my parcel and I don't anticipate receiving it anytime soon at this rate. I went to contact UPS again today and they are having technical difficulties (on the phone line) and I could not get through. Technial difficulties all right!... How do these people stay in business?
Pros: They have a phone number and regular business hours Cons: One of the most insensitive companies around.
I brought items to my local UPS store to get a shipping quote. Mind you, I've lots of experience shipping as an eBay seller and a former store owner, so I'm quite handy with packing and such.
The items were all bubble-wrapped and ready to put into a box with peanuts. I watched as the owner measured every item (what gives with that?)and then turn around and tell me it was going to be $58 for packing! Keep in mind everything is allready packed.
Then he wanted another $78 to ship.
He already knew the answer when I told him to forget it!
This is what happens when you don't have competition.
Use the US POST OFFICE!!! BEST DEAL AROUND!
Pros: None
There are other package handling companies to choose from Cons: Expensive
Late
Unaccountable
Poor customer service
I find it incredulous in this day and age that no one has legally gone after this obvious pilfering scamming institution. They spend millions of dollars promoting the brown machine as this wonderful caring service that will save you money. Nothing could be further from the truth. I purchased a $15 item in California, only to have the shipping and brokerage fees add up to a whopping $80! When I ask the company to ship via anything other than UPS, they said they had an account with only one courier and they wouldn't send it any other way! Lovely. Naturally I was screwed. Not only that, but earlier this year I received a free sample from a manufacturer that sent the item via UPS. They tried to pin on a $150 customs brokerage fee for this item that had a zero value declaration. Of course I refused the order, since I'm not in the habit of forking over money for items that I was supposed to sample. Bottom line - use anyone else.
Pros: They don't have a monopoly Cons: Worst service. Worst customer customer service. Thank god there are other companies to use.
Just had a pkg sent to Canada from the US. Next day air, 62 lbs. The website gave a price of $289.00 including fuel surcharge. I got billed $427.00, $66.00 of which was a fuel surcharge. Why? Freight collect is the answer. I paid a 50% surcharge because the shipment was freight collect, even though I do have an account. It was pointed out to me that buried in all the text at the bottom of the last page under the heading guarantees that the website prices are good only for prepaid shipments. Anybody want to join a class action. Should cost them millions.
Pros: None that I can think of. Cons: UPS's "brokerage fees" are a rip-off.
Just adding my voice to the chorus here to say that UPS shipping to Canada does indeed suck. Expect to pay more in additional hidden "brokerage fees" to UPS when your parcel arrives than you pay for shipping and duties combined.
I no longer order anything from the States if the business I want to order from won't ship through USPS (United States Postal Service). Although parcels shipped through USPS do arrive with a brokerage fee (which wasn't the case a few years ago), it is only a flat $5 fee.
If you're going to order something from the States and have it shipped through UPS, make sure you call UPS and ask them how much their brokerage fees are going to be before you place the order. At least that way you won't be caught unawares. Also be aware that other courrier services (e.g. FedEx) charge similar fees for crossing the U.S.-Canada border.
Pros: none Cons: hidden fees, scam artists in a corporate scale
Surprise hidden fees when U.P.S. showed up on my doorstep. My $40 package from US came with a $36.14 customs fee ($29.55 brokerage fee $5.11 tax). $29.55 fee for a couple minute's worth of work? Scam! UPS is making bank with this hidden fee.
Got my 2nd package this week too, $60 book with a $40 fee. I'm not against a brokerage fee if a) it's mentioned up front there is a fee and b) if it's fair, like the $5 fee USPS uses.
Brokerage fees: What a rip off by zaferus ,Jan 15 '08
Pros: None Cons: UPS totally ripped me off
I got charged $20 in "brokerage fees" for an item that was WITH shipping $24. What a rip off, I'll make sure to specifically request for any vendor to NOT use UPS. How can this be legal?
Attention Canadians!!
Never buy anything in the U.S that will be shippped with ups,ask seller to ship with usps only.If they wont dont buy from them.
Example: Bought 150 feet of snap in gutter screens. Weight approx 18 lbs. Cost $61.00 u.s. Shipping charge via ups $31.00. I find this very expensive. Usps charge approx $16.00 u.s. from N.C.
They call me and tell me that there is a brokerage fee of $36.00 c.a.d. and if I dont pay well they will not deliver until I do.
This a complete RIPOFF!!
I bought a flash kit from Ebay (US) Invoice was 102 USD, and I paid 32 USD for shiping, UPS charged me 38.40 for Brokerage fee plus Tax and Duty. Never use UPS services never.
Had a guitar shipped to me from USA to Canada.
Paid $127 for the guitar, so the package value was $127
Shipping was $61 (steep but acceptable for a big item such as a guitar)
Upon delivery, they requested $91 for brokerage & hidden fees.
That's 72% of the item value!!! F-U UPS!
How the hell can they add on 72% of an items monetary value as a fee ???
Pros: None. Zero. "F" Cons: Paying a premium for mediocre service.
I don't understand all the complaints about using UPS for cross-border or international shipping! Any problems with UPS are easily solved with only a few dozen phone calls, weeks of hassles and hours of indifferent and arrogant lectures from UPS customer "service" representatives.
Pros: nice commercials. Cons: they lie, don't care about their customers customers. Oh, and they lie.
How can UPS put a "next day air" shipment on a truck half way across the country because there is no room on the plane? That is the latest (and not the first) of our fiascos in dealing with UPS (OOPS) with our manufacturer in Canada. Today I asked "the manager" (probably a co-worker) how that is possible and I was told that because of the holidays that shipping slows down and planes are decreased. HUH? What about American Airlines or somebody else going the way our package is going? Wait until the next plane? faster than a truck. All he could say is "I'm sorry" I have customers that I tell what I am told from UPS (It will be there before Thanksgiving) and now i look like the liar. Seperate issue: when they went on strike, they made their "valued" customers the victims. They suck, plain and simple. Even their tracking software is programed to lie and the humans back it up with more ignorance, practiced deciet and deception.
In my opinion, they can not be relied on to deliver anything but what suits them.
Camera worth $225 - UPS wants $77 by upsblows ,Mar 06 '08
Pros: Nothing! They are rip-off artists. Other couriers are cheaper in brokerage fees - much cheaper Cons: $52 in brokerage fees speaks for itself!
Of that $77 - about $52 goes to UPS. I had the UPS support people break the cost down for me. The rest was Duty and GST to total about $25 of what I would have to pay
UPS: professional robbery service. by regisiam ,Dec 03 '07
Pros: nothing broken Cons: Killing Hidden fees ,bad costumer service ,pick up location 20km from downtown.
They will charge you 200% more then you can ever imagine. I forget my phone in the US my friend had ship it to me to canada Marked as a gift just in case still they have asked me to pay 70$ in brokerage fees inaddition to the shipping cost of 30$ Can you imagine ??!!!. The customer service is well trained to make you give up (hold, wait, arguing, transfer ). To UPS You did win 70$ free, but you did lost a customer forever
I concur with all the comments--UPS brokerage fees can cost upwards of 30, 40 or 50% or more of your package value!
It is flabbergasting...there are no words to describe my disgust.
I can tell you this..I will NEVER use UPS again. For what that's worth, they better pray I don't extend this influence to my corporation..that will cost them millions.
A package valued at $39.99 U.S. -- the brokerage fees? $37.21 !!!!!! UPS customer service tries to make it sound like a government requirement. Crooks AND liars. I will NEVER again purchase anything from the U.S. if they ship via UPS. As a matter of fact, I will never use UPS for anything ever again.
Pros: Scammers - great for sending packages for free! Cons: Senders are held liable even when the receiver accepts charges and received item.
In December, I shipped a package to Germany. The package was sent via the receivers account (COD). It was received and signed for by the receiver, but he decided to decline the charge a few weeks later. Now I am stuck with a UPS bill of $170. What a scam!? Even though I have proof the receiver asked me to send the package expensed to his account and even though he accepted for the package, I am faced with the bill. So if you ever what to send something for free, simply walk into a UPS store, send the package on the receivers account, use an anonymous name as the sender, then have the receiver refuse the charges. Now UPS will be left looking for someone to pay for the package! What a loop-hole!! I called the UPS Customer Service line and they continue to inform me that the 'contract' says the liability of charges is that of the shipper. The receiver in Germany has not returned any of my emails or phone calls.
Pros: The service in general is not bad. Cons: EXCESSIVE BROKERAGE FEES. You may end up paying $33 for an item that costs $0.
UPS is the most fraudulent courier service in North America.
Their brokerage fees are excessive and no one knows about them before receiving the parcel when it is too late to do anything in order to avoid these charges.
I wish UPS went bankrupt. That will make so many people happy ...
Brokerage fee is a KILLER (beware Canadian buyers) by snontario ,Aug 25 '06
Pros: on time Cons: brokerage fee
I just received my item via UPS that I bought from a ebay seller resides in the U.S.
interestingly, I was asked for extra $22 COD to get the item. THIS WAS JUST A "brokerage fee" (not duty, custom or something like that) for an item that cost me $20 itself.
IF you check the UPS website, this fee is not what you can find that out easily there!
UPS fee is an outrageous rip off by nite_xr ,Feb 21 '05
Pros: Easy for retailers to use Cons: Excessive fees that few US retailers actually even know about.
UPS has once again ripped me off. 27.99 USD item and a 17.00 CAD brokerage charge. I sent back a package that had a 130USD item because they wanted 40CAD for brokerage (over and above the GST and duty, it was 69CAD total owing to receive that package.) I will not purchase from companies using UPS as their shipping agent again.
yoU Poor Sucker-what a rip-off! by hercfixr ,Feb 16 '05
Pros: None Cons: -super high hidden brokerage fees
Don't use UPS Standard to Canada-ever!
I recently bought some assorted small aircraft tools from a company in the US. Even with the extra costs of exchange and shipping I thought I got a good deal-Until the UPS guy showed up and handed me a bill that included $38.40 in brokerage fees-on a $120 Shipment!
None of this was mentioned in any of the billing process..
I needed the tools, so all I could do was pay up.Calling Customer Service didn't help either-they said it was a "normal" fee. I'd hate to see an abnormal one.
I can guarantee that is the last time I will EVER use UPS.
UPS Total Government Charges - Canada Customs Fees Collected not Remitted by no_sucker ,Dec 12 '06
Pros: Punish corporate fraud, individual fraud criminal offence, Don't charge custom fees on duty-free items. Cons: Tell consumers up-front to expect a reasonable handling fee per item.
Phonograph records manufactured in USA are duty free under NAFTA but UPS issues a document claiming to collect custom brokerage fees on behalf of Canada Customs & Revenue Agency to clear shipment. These are duty-free items so therefore this is money UPS collects fraudulently - corporate fraud should have legal consequences just as individuals are charged.
UPS Brokerage - Con artists by gelsoft ,Jan 11 '05
Pros: Good tracking system Cons: Outrageous brokerage fee
On a shipment from the US to Canada with a duty value of 56.20 CAN, I was charged 30.84 CAN for Brokerage. I had spoken with the shipper about the outrageous fees charged by UPS and he had assured me that I wouldn't be charged for brokerage fees as he was handling the paper work for UPS.
Charges would have been minimal with USPS. I hope that UPS will suffer one day for this practice.
UPS Brokerage Scam in Canada by wmstrome ,Jun 17 '05
Pros: Tracking option (USPS tracking ends at the border. Cons: Long delay in border crossing at times. Completely unreasonable brokerage fee
I agree with all the other reviews condemning UPS. Purolator is half as bad -- I had to pay a total of $17 on delivery of a $29.00 item.
Warning about USPS: If you use any of the "Priority" mail options, the package will end up in the hands of UPS for transfer across the border and delivery in Canada, with those $30 brokerage fee charges! It ended up taking over two weeks to get my last shipment.
The best way I have found so far is USPS REGULAR MAIL -- letter rate is best if it is small enough, or regular surface parcel post.
Got shafted both ways by UPS for brokerage fees on Refurbished/Used, US made empty hard disk carriers. Yes, USED, with dust and all. They charged me 76.92$ for shipping + duties and various fees. The HD carries price was 110$...The package weight was 2 pounds including the box.
Another time they dumped a 600$ APC UPS on my front porch, on a rainy day. Had to RMA the poor thing, it was dripping wet.
At least they chose the right color, brown, i can smell the miles ahead before they dump their package.
Well, not only they charged me a whopping 15% of the package value (another GST and PST!), but it was WAY more than stated on their site.
Unfortunately, I payed before checking, and there is no way now to get my money back.
Do not Use this service! by stewart710 ,Jun 30 '06
Pros: They give you tracking info on the item they are holding hostage. Cons: Ridiculously high hidden charges that go straight to UPS.
I shipped an item I sold on EBay to Canada. The item cost $35. UPS Store told me it would cost $19. I thought that was a bit high, as I'd figured it would be only $15. Now I find out that UPS is holding my package hostage and demanding a ransom of $31.49 from the guy who bought my motherboard!!! That is a total of %0.49 to ship a $35 item? When is the inevitable class action suit going to come? I was not told about these hidden fees when I shipped it. UPS to Canada is a SCAM!!!
Don't use UPS for shipment from the USA. by javbergen ,Aug 05 '06
Pros: I cannot find any good thing to say about UPS. Cons: This was the second time.I can't understand that they are still in business.
On a shipment of $149.00 Can. from California, prepaid, including shipping and handling, UPS charged $ 64.26 as COD for brokerage fees and GST. I had asked the shipper not to use UPS, but apparently they did not understand.
My advice: Don't place the order with a company that ships through UPS, or you will get ripped off.
I ordered two guitar pedals from some guy on ebay, and was getting them for about $350 CDN, which was ok. The package has finally arrived at my local ups depot, so I call them up to confirm that it's there, and the dude tells me there is a $101.46 brokerage fee. Holy crap, that is just robbery. Makes me sick really to know I'm getting ripped off, and there's nothing I can do about it.
Pros: NONE. Not a single one. Cons: The last 5 packages I've received from UPS have been horrendously damaged.
UPS to ANYWHERE is going to get you one very damaged parcel. I've received multiple packages from UPS (I stopped using them to send items after having to file a complaint against them with the BBB) that have been virtually destroyed.
The last one, which I received today, has a split down the front (some one could have easily opened it), a huge gash in the side of it, and the top has split on both sides. I want my wife to see it before I open it.
Do NOT use UPS to Canada - insane HIDDEN costs! by rage2 ,Feb 04 '04
Pros: None Cons: Hidden fees, stupid Customer Service Reps, Say no to UPS!
I had some auto parts (3 boxes) shipped from the US to Canada. These parts were replacement parts, as the original parts that were sent to me were incorrect. Therefore, these parts that have already been charged duty/GST the first time around. I already got screwed the first time around via UPS.
We called UPS, and they said if there's no duty charged, there won't be any brokerage charge. How wrong is that! The parts arrived, 3 boxes, and each box was charged $71.69 brokerage for a whopping total of $215.07. Duty was ZERO. Tax was ZERO. These were warranty/replacement parts for gods sake! I called UPS to complain, and all they kept saying is that their fees are competitive. Competitive with what? It would've been cheaper to find a guy on the street to drive the 400 miles to the States, pick up my stuff, and drive it back to my house!

UPS Brokerage Fees- Ludicrous by redcarnation ,Jan 14 '04
Pros: Flashy commercials, European-style Vans, Brown Shorts. Cons: Their entire range of services, especially hidden brokerage fees.
I recently bought a camera online, and had it sent from the U.S. to Canada. The camera cost $100.00, and was sent via the delightful UPS Ground service. I was even more delighted when the camera arrived (weeks later) and I was slapped with an $87.00 "Brokerage Fee" C.O.D. Come on, $87.00 on a 5 X 5 inch parcel, weighing 1/2 Lbs, with a declared value of $100.00? The man who sent the camera was not aware this would occur. I complained to UPS Canada and after many conversations, the blame was basically pinned on the man who shipped the camera. He was not told at the time by UPS of Brokerage Fees, but UPS basically said "too f***ing bad."
Pros: well..I guess you get your item. Cons: hidden broker fees.(try to find on website) sometimes 75%-100% cost of item.
heck, they even bought the url upssucks.com fearing the wrath of people ripped off. I just got in a parcel from the states valued at 44$us. I paid these blood-suckers 12$us to ship it. When it gets to my doorstep, there is a 28.55$ broker charge. WTF??? So if I add this together, it is approximately 45$can they stole from me to ship this item..an item worth about 60$can..so what is that..75% of the cost of the item? What an incredible rip. I WILL NEVER use UPS ever again, nor will I allow any company my company deals with to use UPS to me, even if there are special rates or they eat the fees. I will not support this.
Heck, I thought it was 'free' trade? At least the duty before was far less than this, and went to OUR government.
ANYONE buying from US to Canada use USPS, or Fedex. Anything under 100$ is broker free with them.
ups brokerage fees are too high by dangerman ,Oct 12 '04
Pros: I got my package. Cons: They charge too much.
I agree. I just got a bill from them and found their brokerage fees to be excessive. Also, the brokerage fee hit me by surprise, being somewhat of an unexpected/hidden charge...I imagine it must be the same unpleasant surprise for many others in Canada who order items from the US. From now on I'll ask the supplier to make sure they don't ship by UPS. If you request that your item is not handled by UPS, and the buyer ships by UPS anyway, from what I've read, legally you don't have to pay the UPS fees. Anyway, with the communication that the internet now provides, more people will realize what's going on. I've looked around the internet for more information on this charge and I have found other comments on the excessive UPS brokerage fees. Hopefully UPS will someday regret they decided to overcharge. Keep all your bills in case there's ever a class action suit. :)
I bought camera online and paid shipping fee us$23from us to canada. When I received it, UPS charged me extra $55 plus tax for brok fee. I called ups they said all fees in their website that I can't find. They also promised me to e-mail me their fee table. And I never had these email. This is UPS service.
Nover use UPS for shipping from US to Canada. Never!
Don't use UPS for cross border shipping US to Canada by omalleyjames ,Jun 02 '09
Pros: We have a really nice UPS driver in our neighbourhood. Cons: Cross border they are too expensive - their brokerage fees are excessive.
I have purchased many items on Ebay.com and I always insist on USPS. UPS is cheap and they pick up so is easier for the seller but the package crosses the border and UPS slaps on a "brokerage charge" of $30 or sometimes $60 !!! I already paid shipping to the seller and now I am getting it up the %#@ again. Canada Customs charge tax on the item and UPS then bill me at my door so I am required to pay tax on the item, the custom/brokerage fee and then tax on the custom/brokerage fee. I received an item worth $560 today and I paid over $150 at my door. That's pretty excessive. USPS will hand over my package to Canada Post at the border and then Canada post will charge me the tax at my door - but no extra fees! I googled "UPS Sucks" and I found this http://www.merchantlaw.com/courier.html This law firm has started a class action lawsuit for people who have paid these crazy fees.
UPS Canada Brokerage Fee Equivalent to Robbery by sktoon ,Jul 12 '06
Pros: They do deliver and track packages well. Cons: THEY CHARGE EXORBITANT BROKERAGE FEES FOR SURFACE DELIVERY AND DO NOT INFORM US SHIPPERS.
I just received another package from a US vendor that did not follow instructions not to ship UPS Surface and once again, even after numerous complaints in the past to them, I was charged a $12 brokerage fee on a $33 package which had no importation duties to be collected. In other words, a $12 fee for ZERO service.
In the past I've had a small item shipped by UPS surface that after their exorbitant brokerage fees were added to the surface shipping cost was more than the second day air service by UPS which has brokerage fees included - Meaning - THE CHARGE WAS HIGHER FOR AN EIGHT DAY SURFACE DELIVERY THAN UPS WOULD CHARGE TO SHIP IT SECOND DAY AIR!
UPS services to Canada SUCK by nikkorkot ,Oct 25 '07
Pros: Clear customs for you Cons: Rip you off shamelessly
Avoid shipping to Canada with UPS by all means. They charge ridiculous brokerage fee that often amounts to a 50 or even 100 percent of the item's value. Total rip-off and outrageous violation of free trade protocol. How they manage to get away with this I don't know. USPS is a good alternative. Canada Post will pick up delivery in Canada with no brokerage fee. If Canada Customs bother to scrutinize your parcel this will add up to an extra week to the delivery time, and they will charge a Canadian recipient 5 bucks for their services on top of GST and PST.
If you have money to waste... then use UPS by anthonyyeung ,Oct 07 '06
Pros: Good for people who like to get ripped. Cons: poor service, hidden fees, sneaky service, overall badness
Otherwise, UPS is the worst possible shipping services one could use. Their brokerage fees are absolutely ridiculous! You'll end up getting charged $50 on a $100 item. Always use USPS to ship, or if you must courier, use FedEx.
Pros: I will have to stretch here!!! Cons: This one is much easier. Slow. Late. Lost. Broken.
I have several friends that work, or have worked for these folks. One a pilot, and a few drivers, and one or two at UPS stores. They all tell me the same thing. There is a very good reason that they use the color BROWN!!!!
Pros: Quick, if they can get it to the right place Cons: Terrible customer service!!!
I have to contact UPS Customer Service or should I say Dis-service about 4 times per week. UPS has the most unfriendly, uneducated customer service agents I have ever come across. They make a cell phone companies customer service look great and I believe everyone knows that is BAD. I have to call UPS customer service because packages are not delivered to the right destination and apparently the agents are looking at the internet tracking only. They can only give me the same info that I have on my screen. Are you telling me that with all the technology they claim to have at their disposal, that they can't give me a little more clarity as to what happened to my package? UPS is absolutely horrible!! If your package makes it to you and it is in one piece then you should go by a lottery ticket because you are about the luckiest person on the planet.
UPS from the U.S. to Canada - never again by greyraven8 ,Oct 29 '09
Pros: it's possible you will get things quicker - but the cost is not worth it Cons: Brokerage fees - designed to make you much broker.
Twice in my life I have ordered things from the states by UPS; both times I got charged outrageous brokerage fees - worth almost as much as or more that the item I ordered.
If a company in the states will only ship UPS, I say look for the product elsewhere. I have phoned and emailed companies and individuals that usually only ship by UPS and some of the them will ship by USPS for a little more - go that way. Once in a while you will get charged taxes and maybe a $5 fee, but not the sky high fee UPS will charge.
Pros: Quickest way to waste both time and money. Cons: Unethical, lying, gouging, cheating...
A week after the package was shipped they attempted a delivery. I wasn't home so they left a notice. I signed the chit and placed the money they wanted in an envelope and taped it to the door. Subsequently the trackiong notice showed that they had attempted delivery but that I didn't have the funds. When I phoned and asked why the driver didn't take the money in the envelope, they were clueless. Subsequent notices in the web tracking notice said that I had refused the package and aon and on.
Use the post office if you can wait a week or so. Beats paying $31.99 to have UPS fool around for two weeks and then threaten to send the package back. If you need it in a hurry then use Fedex or DHL. The stuff shows up at your door without any surprise brokerage charges.
This is a change from the past when I scoured UPS.com for any mention of this fee.
I have talked to a UPS manager about this 'fee' and let her know I would personally go out of my way to let EVERYBODY I know in my business circles about this RIPOFF. She couldn't care less, "you can't do anything about the fee except pay it"... to which I said I will never give UPS a nickel of my business in the future ever again. "That's your decision".
The post office charges $6,"They have an unfair advantage... ya da ya da", DHL charges $10... my answer.
I don't like to eliminate sellers in the US that ship only via UPS but I've done so and I go out of my way to let these sellers know what UPS is doing to their customers in Canada and that this is why I'm not buying anything from them.
Bottom line... ARROGANT... PATHETIC... and we willingly pay money to them for this treatment? NOT ANYMORE
Terrible service from US to Canada by shawshank73 ,Nov 10 '09
Pros: I can't think of any. Seriously. Cons: Quality control. Brokerage fees. Customer service. Lack of common sense. No eyeballs.
If you need something from the U.S. fast, DO NOT USE A RETAILER WHO USES UPS.
Three packages from Newegg. All three faced delivery problems. 1st pkg - sent to wrong town and then left behind at sorting facility. 2nd pkg - left behind at sorting facility. 3rd pkg - left behind at sorting facilty.
Three packages in a row and all three mess ups had nothing to do with my location.
Luckily, Newegg has a deal with them, so there are no brokerage fees when you order from the newegg.ca site. Items are still shipped from the U.S. however.
no honest attempt to reach customer by jsmacclellan ,Jul 03 '09
Pros: Online tracking, and quick access to information about a shipment. Cons: Very, very poor, inflexible company policies, no true effort to deliver or work with customer.
Horrible, horrible, non responsive service. My apartment building is a locked building. UPS may or may not have left a slip on the first 2 attempts at delivery, but I did receive a notice they online posted as "third delivery attempt" although the slip is labeled "2." This was June 24. I called UPS within 2 hours of the time on that notice, and was told that the shipment was being returned to the shipper. I offered to pick up the shipment at their facility, but they refused; it was now in an air container, they said and we could not receive it. July 2, returned to shipper, who was not accessible. Again, contacted UPS, attempting to reconsign, or set up for reshipment, or set to will call, offering to pay all charges; all requests were refused. UPS said they will treat the shipment as abandoned, and discard. Needless to say, the package was very important to me; a special order, limited edition product, and non replacable. UPS shows no concern for their customers, and makes no attempt to work with them. If you care about your merchandise, stay away from this shipper, far, far away.
