Good Idea, but the Z505 is better

by Skyleth , Jul 12 '00
Pros: Light Weight, Small, Sleek, Stylish, Fast, Lots of Memory, Nice Screen, Great Weight
Cons: Screen is too small, Keyboard is a little too small, No NIC, you have to buy too many things along with the notebook
Sony's Vaio PCG-SR7K at first seems to be the perfect choice for anyone who wants an ultra portable notebook. But I strongly recommend that you look again.

Know What You're Getting...

by malench2 , Feb 03 '01
Pros: Light weight, clear screen, powerful
Cons: No serial/parallel ports, CD Rom and floppy drive sold separately, MS Office not preloaded
I purchased the Sony Vaio SR7K after performing a great deal of research, but still missed some important decision factors that I hope to share here.

While this machine is very powerful and ultraportable, it does have some frustrating...

SR7K for Travel Presentations

by SteveLi , Oct 24 '00
Pros: weight, speed, storage, graphics
Cons: difficult to get peripherals, monitor adapter, speaker quality
I purchased the Sony SR7k because of its combination 600MHz, 12GB hard drive, 128Mram and graphics quality. I travel 3-6/months to give seminars and lectures via digital projection and this machine is great for it - I often get more questions about the...

Good, but limited companion

by rs500 , Jul 13 '01
Pros: Size, Weight, iLink, HD, Processor, RAM
Cons: no serial/parallel/ethernet built-in; no optical/floppy built-in
As i began travelling more and more, i knew i needed a smaller laptop because 6 or 7 lbs feels like a ton after walking long enough. The SR7K is less than 3 lbs and i definitely felt the difference. Though it had no internal optical drive or floppy, i...

Nice and portable!

by ManaKill , Nov 02 '00
Pros: Low price, good features
Cons: graphics card is phooey
Overview
I thought this laptop was pretty good for it's price. It runs nice, smooth, and most of all, quiet! I hate it when laptops sound like a paper shredder.

Good Things

- Has 100 MHz BUS, and an Intel®...

Fantastic Notebook!

by nickelzy , Nov 05 '00
Pros: Portability; Battery Life; Display
Cons: Having to purchase CD ROM separately
The Sony SR7K in my opinion is a fantastic notebook computer. It scores high on portability, weighing in at 2.98 lbs, has a very good display, great bundle of software and very good battery life.

If portability is an issue to you, then I...

Monster Machine in a Small Package

by brhsr50 , Aug 05 '00
Pros: Ease of Use, Nice Features
Cons: Be careful Installing Software!
I work for Sony technical support. Biased? No. I have to support these things, so I have no fondness for problem units. You've seen the ads? They are all true. This machine is ideal for both the business user & the computer novice. As long as you are...

Lean, mean machine

by 2bad , Dec 18 '00
Pros: light and powerful
Cons: external drives
The Sony SR7K is a very good machine when it comes to power on the road. The unit is made for portability, weighing in at arould 3 lbs and about 1 inch thin, it can be carried almost any where. Not only is it light, but it is made of quality...

Cool but Fragile

by unclejay , Sep 15 '00
Pros: Super portability, battery life
Cons: Case warps in heat, slow
What a relief to get rid of the 15 pound anvil around my neck ! Out went the Dell Ironman Triathalon Shot-Put and in came the SR7K ! It's only 10 by 8 inches, fits in one of those cool Eagle Creek All Aboard travel pouches, and has a great screen -...

A great little machine

by likestech , Oct 02 '00
Pros: size, weight, and power management,
Cons: no serial port, expensive, poor speakers
The Sony VAIO PCG-SR7K is the best laptop I have owned, and it's my second VAIO. I like portable laptops and this is the first one that really qualifies for that title. Here's why: it's 3 lbs (with the battery), the battery that comes with this machine...

A great ultraportable for travel

by pcalarco , Aug 16 '01
Pros: sleek form factor and weight, enough processor power for most tasks, multimedia-friendly, nice software bundle
Cons: keyboard takes getting used to, only one PCMCIA slot
The negative reviews have focused on the lack of provided peripherals that come with this unit. I shopped around, and found the SR7K for about $1600 in November 2000, which was a tremendous deal over the Dell and IBM portables my colleagues had...

Good laptop, needs more ports.

by runrunjete , Apr 15 '01
Pros: Lightweight, very portable, Windows 2000 Professional works well.
Cons: No serial or parallel port, keyboard a little small. Needs IR as well.
The SR7K is a lightweight, cute looking notebook that commands a lot of attention. My friends are always curious about it when they see me using it. The best point about it is the operating system it comes with, Windows 2000 Professional that works...

Got a great deal
by rvehock ,Nov 09 '06
Pros: Excellent battery life, very light and portable, runs very cool and quiet, has excellent screen.
Cons: Does not come with legacy ports, I do not where Sony would have put them?
Picked up one that runs great with a bad battery for $100. Upgraded to XP Professional, purchased a new battery (lasts almost 4 hours), added 128Mb of RAM (now up to 256Mb), and a 3Com Xjack wireless PCMCIA 801.11b card. My total investment is $250 and I now have a nice small laptop that travels with me and has enough CPU and battery power to handle most of my needs.

sony sr7k: can it still live up to today's standards?
by biolaman ,Feb 12 '06
Pros: excellent screen, windows 2000 on recovery cds, sony magiccard slot for memory cards.
Cons: 1 pc card and 1 usb slot.
i purchased an sr7k from someone who paid $2200 for it 2 years ago.

the big question is now that i've used it, can it live up to today's standard for ultra light laptops?

the answer is...yes and no. yes, because its still as light as can be nowadays. no, because you take this sr7k with you without any cd or floppy drives and you have to use a pc card to use the wireless connection. throw in the 1 pc card feature and 1 usb slot and you got just a laptop that is, well, nostalgic.

read the other posts on this unit for comparable features and reviews. i enjoyed them and encourage anyone who is getting a sr7k to read the reviews then make your purchase. its still a great laptop and much better quality then some of today's retail low end units.
