Pros: Speed, does not tie up phone line Cons: telephone support, won't check on problem until 5 complaints received
Update (March 2002)
I have returned to make a confession. Since I wrote this Epinion, things have changed at least a little at Southwestern Bell. The first two times I had connection problems with my DSL, after publishing this Epinion, I was...
Pros: faster than dial up Cons: billing problems, port scans, unguaranteed speeds
**Updated at end** I've not had very good luck with my ADSL. I ordered it December 15, 1999 when it first became available. After repeated calls to Southwestern Bell, I finally received my DSL kit early in February 2000.
SWBell DSL program description: The installation was free and they gave me an ethernet card and external modem. The cost is $39.95 a month for 12 months.
Pros: I have the cleanest kitchen this side of the Mississippi. Cons: I have spent several hours of this month in a negative frame of mind due to SWB.
(Please Note: Since Epinions still doesn't have a section specified for local and/or long distance telephone service, I'm writing my review under the ISP category for Southwestern Bell.)
Pros: WAS Fast, Convenient Cons: Wait in line to get it, More expensive than the typical ISP, Connection Problems
UPDATE TO ORIGINAL:
I cancelled my DSL as of the end of August, 2001 because of speed problems. Although I had virtually no problems for over a year, something has changed and I could not get it fixed. For 3 weeks I have complained to SWBELL about...
Pros: Fast downloads. 95% Uptime. Kept their promises. Cons: Help Desk 1-888 headache! Slight hiss on the line, even with the filters.
THE PRODUCT:
SWBell produces a piggybacked digital signal that carries massive amounts of data to your house at very fast speeds. Unless you're a Data File Junkie you'll get plenty of information whenever you need it. The service is up...
Pros: Fast (when it works) Cons: Customer service is poor; never know when/if you'll connect
Day One (mid-June, 2001)
Learning that our soon-to-be new neighborhood is in a DSL area made us ecstatic. Doesn't take much to make us happy these days. We've been online since 1992, starting out with the old Prodigy Classic before it even...
Pros: Hyper reliable, very fast Cons: Atrocious customer service and support
Lots of people wonder which is better for them DSL or Cable. For the past 3 months I have tested both side by side - Southwestern Bell ADSL vs. Sunflower Cable modems in Lawrence, KS.
Pros: better than dialup Cons: not as good as cable internet
About two months ago, I finally got my Southwestern Bell ADSL installation. I haven't been impressed yet. Here's the story:
It took about 5 weeks for them to install the DSL (from the date I applied for it). After the installation was done, the...
Pros: Great Speed compared to Dial Up Cons: Awful Service
I have had Southwestern Bell Corporation DSL service (using the term
very loosely) for 6 months now. If you have already made the mistake of signing up for DSL, then this review is for you.
Pros: Faster than Flipper Cons: May take longer than a glacier to get to your home
You're sitting at your computer with a major decision to make. You've been aching to try the next demo of your favorite game, a dauntingly large 20 MegaByte file. "No sweat," you think, "my dial-up connection is stable enough, I'll just...
