MDs Are Coming MDs Are Coming

by glennhanna , Feb 04 '00
Pros: Awesome capability for such a small size. Makes Cassette Walkmans look ancient.
Cons: This player does't play MP3s, new ones do. High Price. Battery only lasts 4 hours.
Update--- February 12th 2001 ----
More and more people are getting CDR and CDRW burners. This looks to be where Computer Storage Media will be heading. I still like the idea of using MDs to replace 3.5 inch hard disks.

As for...

Compact and Sleek

by kornell_911 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Dec 25 '99
Pros: Sleek, small, lightweight, never skips
Cons: Slow recording times

The MZ-R55 is a great MD player. Advanced, the MD boasts a tiny, fit-in-your-palm size with everything you need for a digital recorder. But the R-55 lacks one major feature--a long battery life. Reading the other reviews and having...

Featured packed MD Player/Recorder

by Jonathan , Jul 08 '99
Pros: Great design, neat features
Cons: A little heavy, lack of MD selection
In this day and age it takes quite a bit to impress your average technophile. But Sony has a knack for combining stylish design and electronic wizardry in a must-have package.

The MZ-R55 is a little more than 2 inches square, and extremely...

:/ Great But The Battery!

by UCturboBoii , Nov 13 '00
Pros: Small Size & "Package Deal"
Cons: Very Short Battery Life
Don't let the size of the MZR-55 captivate your thoughts as a " trustful " MD player. The good side of this MD-player is first of all, is its size. Second, the included stick controller have backlit, unlike the MZR-50. Its sound is the same as...

Wave of the Future

Pros: Light, doesn't skip, can record mp3s
Cons: battery life
When I first heard about minidisc players, I didn't think that they were really going to catch on. Not many people had heard of them and still haven't. Artists generally don't release their albums on to minidisc, so I thought that the player's main...

Sony MD-R55

by koRn_FrEaK8 , Jul 20 '00
Pros: Very Small
Cons: short battery life

mp3 to MD with Sony's magic

by Chris_Tal , Apr 27 '00
Pros: Sony Quality is evident in excess
Cons: no digital out, clumsy track editing
Deciding between MD and mp3 players has just got a load easier with the introduction of the MZR55PCIF. With this minidisc recorder you get what in effect is a USB sound card, specially for recording to MD.

My review of the MZ-R55

by nerys71 , Jun 05 '01
Pros: Very Small and sleek - backlit LCD
Cons: Not as easy to use and LOUSY battery performance

by afeinman , Apr 07 '00
Pros: Small! Good quality input/output, full feature set
Cons: Poor battery life, even with external pack; not durable enough; stiff buttons

by CottyKid , May 01 '00
Pros: It is tiny and has all the features
Cons: you have to add a battery pack for extended life - but you have to do that on all the real small systems, so it is not really much of a con, but the only possible one I can think of!
I purchased my first MD system a few years back when hardly a soul had heard of them. It was a wonderful system that included a home deck and a portable player. Only the system recorded, the portable player was only that - a player. I was thrilled...

Lots of Bang in such a small space, Highly Recommended but beware of glitch

by Trevor311 , Jan 16 '00
Pros: Small, Leightweight, great sound, comes with rechargable battery and charger, and a AA battery attachment for added use, nice carrying pouch, wired remote control for ease of use while working, doubles as a stereo or mono recorder
Cons: Rechargeable battery only lasts about 2 and a half hours with full charge, likes to record when you put a Disc in without telling it to, same thing when pushing stop to charge batteries sometimes
I've owned my MZR-55 for a year now and wouldn't trade anything in the world for it. It's extremely easy to use, lightweight, and small, making it a great gift for the person who loves CD quality music that's portable, so they can work out while...

by Limp-HotDog , Nov 29 '99
Pros: Very portable AND discrete for recording.
Cons: Programming tracks may be too difficult for some people.
By now, MINIDISCs should be a viable option for replacing that "old tape-deck" for most people. They are 2.5" by 2.5" by about 0.25" and look very similar to old 3.5" floppies. The sound quality of the minidisc is usually...

Sony's smallest portable MD recorder. But is it their best??

by killerinstinct , Sep 19 '99
Pros: Small size, light weight, neat colors, can title from remote/while recording or playing
Cons: Very short battery life, small hard to press buttons on main unit, structural integrity of main unit
When Sony intoduced this new, tiny portable recorder, it was able to claim the title "World's Smallest". That title was given up long ago to Sharp's and Sony's newest portable MD players/recorders in their war for the smallest portable. Yet...

What A Hard Hitting Little Guy

by sergio.a.s , Feb 24 '00
Pros: Smallest recorder on the market, Great skip protection, Great price
Cons: Dosn't sound good when played back through a receiver
Let's see hear where to begin. I have had this minidisk player for about year now and I tell you there is no way I'm going back to CD players. This thing (when I bought it) was the smallest portable minidisk recorder in the world. Only now a year later...

BIG disappointment

by garbage , Jun 18 '00
Pros: Size, LCD remote with backlit display
Cons: Battery life, low volume, poor playback options
I upgraded from the Sony MZ-R30 to the Sony MZ-R55 and found the 'upgrade' to actually be more of a 'downgrade'. Yes, the newer model MZ-R55 is much, much smaller than most MD players/recorders. Yes, it has a much nicer remote with the handy backlit...

MD Player

by triworld , Feb 09 '00
Pros: Small, light weight, and sound quality is superb
Cons: It does tend to eat the batteries quickly
IS this not the best portable Mini Disc player/recorder out there. It will never skip a beat and it is small enough to fit in your back pocket and the sound quality is just superb. I think that there has never been a better portable mini disc player out...

Pros: its great size for portability

In my personal opinion I think that this product is really great. I think that most MD's are, but this one in particular is a great price for all that it offers. I have owned this product for about half a year and I am very glad that I made the...

Pros: it is compact, functional, and fun to use
Cons: it is difficult to program, and lid jams occasionally
The Sony MZ-R55 is a great little gadget to have, and it is also very fun and useful. It has a great compact size and shape, and it is smaller than the average wallet. It is also very light and easy to use. The screen is large and easy to read. You can...

Excellent small player but battery life suffers

by MisterEd21 , Jan 22 '00
Pros: Small, lightweight, very cool looking
Cons: Short rechargeable battery life
I've had this product since it first came out and I must say that it's still one of the best and smallest portable recordable MD players out there. They don't really get any smaller, except for the MZ-R90. The only weakness the MZ-R55 has is it's weak...

by final18 , Feb 13 '00
Pros: THE BEST EVER
Cons: CONS?!? No way

Cons: Battery doesn't last more than 5 hours.
I got my SONY MZ-R55 MiniDisc player about.. 2 months ago. And I LOVE IT. It's so easy to record music. To save money, I download MP3's off the net and I just record them on MD's. Easy and cheap! And I get to make my own mixes; what more can a girl...

Pros: Attractive design, lightweight, convenient
Cons: Hard to label songs
I bought the MZ-R55 on a family trip to Taiwan. It only costed about $240 american dollars there, so I figured it was a good deal compared to the retail cost here. I didn't own a CD player, and my friends told me how convenient they were, so I...

Sony portable minidisc recorder

by slocker , May 19 '00
Pros: compact, cool design
Cons: small buttons, battery life could be better.
I picked this one among other minidisc portables initially for looks. Well at time I bought it, it was the snazziest one out there. But it's been pretty reliable, and I've been using it daily. I’ve even dropped it a few times with no damage noted.

by neilsahgal , May 04 '01
Pros: Small, lots of inputs and outputs, functionality of remote.
Cons: Battery/Charger defect, headphones, bad customer service
I've had the MZ-R55 for about 18 months now and used it a lot. I'm reasonably happy with it but:

1) Either the battery (30$) or the charger has faded and the unit switches off sometimes after less than 10 minutes play. This appears to be a...

Excellent,but needs more technical durability.
by yubon2 ,Jun 20 '05
Pros: Portable but with superb sound!
Cons: Battery life short.Too undurable
It rocks!

My mother lended the MZ R55
after I was bored with stupid sounds of tapes,
although I just want cheap digital players
but MD was a big step into sound quality.
You have your own grey MD fabric or felt case.
Earphones with in line remote wich supports more than
Play/Pause/Forward/Reverse!And remote has LCD display!
Name your MD tracks and lots more!
Record from TV by supplied audio cable and record with microphone (not supplied).

But soon I got the hang of it without manual.
I listened many times and then,
I looked for a box full of MDs and inserted the
disk when......BEEP! The battery ran out and
charged battery when....THE CHARGER BROKE!!!
I had lost my player now,I cannot use it,now the player is terminated(Better than Zen Micro 5GB because Zen terminates in a few weeks).
I'm getting an MP3 player at Christmas,
I'll research the best I could!
So that is the story which took me from casette to MiniDisk players......

But I highly don't recommend this to anyone.

NEVER EVER BUY A PLAYER OF ANY KIND WHICH HAS A SLOW
BATTERY CHARGER!!!!!!(Better with a player with AA or AAA batteries)
