Pros: watching television without hurting your eyes from bad static. Cons: Worthless channels and over priced monthly bills.
Charter has been my cable company for about 5 months now. They took over Bresnan and it has been down hill from the start. Living in an apartment building you really have no choice then to have cable. I had no cable and could get 3 local channels that...
Pros: You can get a lot of content for a reasonable price...if you do your homework. Cons: Pushy phone reps, complicated names, confusing pricing schemes!
When Charter increased the cost of just Pipeline (broadband internet) service from $29.99 to $39.99 to $52.99 in just over 5 months I knew it was time to get a complete package. Right now Charter charges $10 in additional fees if you don't get a cable ...
Pros: Haven't really thought of one yet Cons: Poor customer service, ill-mannered, impolite technicians, PRICE
Charter Communications- NOT my choice Were a military family. We live on post. One of the downfalls to that is you often are limited in certain choices you have to make when it comes to internet, land lines (regular phone), and your cable ...
Pros: Great customer service Cons: $40.00 seems pricey
When my husband and I bought the monster TV I mentioned in an earlier review (Sony Wega), we began to re-evaluate our cable provider. Charter Communications has been serving us for the better part of 2 years now, and we have always been relatively...
You know, I've been noticing a pattern that seems to exist with respect to Cable Providers here on Epinions. Yes, it seems that just about all of these companies have average ratings of less than three out of five stars. Of course, as satellite...
Pros: Reliable internet and cable, hook-up was done quickly, cable guy is nice Cons: Price, bad customer service who do not understand English, payment plan promises
When you live out in the woods an hour or two from civilization, you really have little choice or selection in cable or internet services. You are very lucky if you have two to choose from. Once we moved here, we had the choice between Charter or one ...
Pros: I got great service! Cons: I had to get past nimrods and raise Cain in order to get it!
Unfortunately, I unintentionally skewed this review long before it ever happened...and it was a good idea, so I'll just tell the story of How I Got Timely, Helpful, Decent Quality Cable Installation on the Billing Cycle of My Choice from the Cable...
Pros: it works most of the time Cons: dealing with "support" requires a six pack and a few shots of something harder
I can handle the truth; what I cant handle is a lie that isnt just untrue but documented. First, some general statements with regards to what amounts to a utility. Once you already have one product and you want to simplify things, then the ...
Pros: Promises more channels, lower rates, better reception Cons: Not following through on their promises yet

Pros: Great cable service, good picture quality Cons: Excess phone hold time.
I have had the “pleasure” of charter service for just over a year and a half, and I can safely say, that for the most part, I’m 99.9% satisfied with the service. I made the switch to Charter from a local telephone company, for the 2 main reasons of ...

A Word About Cable Companies
For those of you who live in areas where there's cable competition, I envy you ... maybe. The general feeling about cable companies is that they gouge you with their prices, they're service (customer,...
Pros: Saves you money on bundled services and doesn't compromise quality Cons: You'll get your first bill a couple of weeks after installation.
The ads looked too good to be true, saving $600 on a 12 month contract, simply for bundling services of cable television, high speed internet access and telephone but we were wanting to get high speed access and Charter Cable were the only people ...
Pros: Cable TV and good reception Cons: Too much $ for too little service

Pros: Well...the picture IS clear. Cons: Outrageously expensive for what they 'give' you, and some company policies are offensive.
I recently moved into my apartment, and for two huge reasons, I needed to get cable TV. One reason being a chronic addiction to General Hospital, which MUST be taped every day; and two, not being the social butterfly in the Miami Faaaaaaaaabulous Club...
Well let's just say I wasn't surprised to see how many others felt the same way I did about Charter but I was surprised by how many people experienced they same problem as I did and the cost differentials posted by everyone.
Pros: Promise good deals Cons: Poor Customer Service (Worst I've Ever Seen), Poor Quality Reception (Former Residence), Good deals are fraud,

Pros: good reception, few outages Cons: only game in town and using that, iffy customer service, dishonest with On Time guarantee

Pros: it's better than nothing Cons: selection, customer service, quality

Charter cable tv is so Terrible at customer service !! by cal48boy ,Apr 06 '07
Pros: It is just another mediocre/worse cable tv provider. Cons: Terrible bad attitude about customer service. Avoid if at all possible !!
Was watching an animal documentary today on tv in santa cruz county, california, and the channel went black. Why not call the long extension tree 800 # you might ask ?
What is the point! The could not care less woman at the other end of the line will want my ssn again,,,and after all that,,,she wont fix the problem with the poor reception of the cable channel. I know because I did this the previous week.
If you can , avoid Charter cable, like the plague.
Customer service is the worst ever. Rude, ignorant, uneducated people--need I say more. Technicians are no better. They have no clue what they're doing and basically read responses out of a manual. They can't think on their own. I've had my Internet access go down countless times as well as cable outages. If I had choices (I can't get satellite where I'm at) I'd jump in a minute. I can't wait for the phone company to offer cable access in my area.
Due to its monopoly, being the only cable provider in St. Louis that's not satellite, Charter thinks this gives it a license to rip off its customers and treat them like dirt. They are ridiculously overpriced and have a horrible selection. They charge you for things you did not ask for and then lie about it. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any company. Everyone in customer service is completely incompetent and not helpful at all. They repeatedly gave me the wrong information and then charged me for it. This is an awful company and I would never do business with them again.
Charter Communications - a monopoly and they know it!` by fair2all ,Nov 03 '06
Pros: none Cons: too many to list...see above comments.
We've had the misfortune to be saddled with Charter for our cable service (TV) and broadband Internet for over 4 years, and cannot understand how any company can stay in business with such terrible products and customer service...oh, yea, they're a monopoly!
TV reception is terrible, but just try to get someone to come out to take a look. They raise your rate on a regular basis, so I just call every 6 months and get the newest "special" so my rate will stay somewhat within our entertainment budget. The thing that bugs me the most is their automated phone solicitations that advertise pay-for-view fights, etc. I've called 5 times now to get these calls stopped (they're always right when I preparing dinner and a real nuisance), and the last service rep yelled at me to calm down. The frustration comes from not having more options available so that the free market can eliminate such poorly run companies. If I had another option, I'd certainly dump Charter, but I don't....and they know it. If you have any other choice besides Charter, I advise you take it...I wish I could!
Pros: Good Service and Helpful Staff Cons: Home repair services come out of northern California 30 miles away.
I have been using Charter for about five years now and have not had any major problems with them. There was one clerical error in billing that took me about two weeks to clear up but other then that they have been pretty good. I live in a pretty remote area of southwest Oregon and most of the services here are a little weak so I have to give Charter some extra credit for the work they do here.
I have basic cable with high-speed internet and the quality of service has been worth every bit of the $54 per month that I pay for those services. I only wish I could pack up the service and take it with me when I have to move.
Customer and technical service could be a little more friendly but I can let some of those things slide as long as I know they are on the job helping me with any problems that I may have with the service.
I would recommend them to anyone moving to this area.
Pros: only option Cons: terrible service, high prices, poor choices
Just moved to St. Louis and tried to get cable through Charter. Have spent more than 3 hours on the phone, total. First, installation came and found a defective "tap" on the cable line. This was supposed to be fixed that day, but waited until the next day. Once cable was on, no HD channels (which we had ordered). Also, had ordered DVR service but this was not installed, either. Another one hour phone call. Charter tried to charge us to fix the original problem. Also, pricing a bit less than ideal (around $150 a month for basic cable and middle internet service). Specifically, however, the phone service was relatively inept, with the service people ignoring what you say and speaking from a script, making inappropriate transfers, and taking a long time to come back from hold.
Pros: definitely not Cons: too dumb to make it as con men
when they finally restored my internet and full cable service (the problem was signal strength from THEIR lines, as it is 99 or 100 percent of the time) (why do they need to come in your house before they check the signal strength? they could at least do your laundry or something useful while inside), my Charter On Demand was not working. I was told to sit at home for three hours (this costs me more than one month's cable service) so another guy can come inside and GET THIS - tell me that I have to unplug the power cord to my cable box and plug it back in.
Then, the phone rep tried to sell me Charter's internet phone service. Since my internet was out for two weeks while they dawdled, I answered that if I wanted that kind of phone service I would move to Albania and sign up with the Albanian phone company. If they could just add electrical power supply to their internet they could make people wait for two weeks for the lights to come on because they refuse to check the signal strength outside before coming in your house.
Pros: NONE Cons: Price, service, reliability? hahaha. They stink.
I've had nothing but problems out of them. I have phone and internet via cable. Sometimes one goes out, sometimes both. Sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, sometimes days. There is NO EXCUSE for this kind of total crap service. Their online help is totally worthless. They'll tell you to call them, which would be fine except that's why I messaged them over the net, my phone is out, AGAIN. Their phone help isn't much better. If you go thru the whole tapdance you'll be on the phone with them for 30-45 minutes. Oh, and they'll ask for your account number. Like people keep their account numbers on them? I just give them my name, address, etc.., scream at them to get it fixed and hang up. It's costing me nearly $100 a month for all the aggravation and worthless service I can stand. Every Charter phone should come with a free cell phone just so you can call them and cuss them out. Do yourself a favor, stay away from Charter. They suck. AT&T may be my only other option.
Inconsistent digital picture! by chattycathy52 ,May 25 '06
Pros: Professional customer service reps Cons: Unreliable service, pricey
We have had Charter Communications ever since they took over Marcus Cable in our area. In the last month, we have had nothing but problems with the digital picture breaking up so badly that several channels are impossible to watch or listen to. I have had to watch another television that does not have a digital box. I have called countless times, they have resent the signal (at which time I was told to shut off the receiver for 20 minutes) and have sent a technician to our house. Nothing seems to fix the problem permanently. Since they are the only cable company in town, I am ready to go to satellite!
Product OK, but Customer Service stinks by wxtoad ,Aug 07 '08
Pros: Had Charter internet service for 4 months - no problems. Cons: Overseas call centers, poor English, dropped calls, VERY frustrating experience.
I had placed our internet service on hold while we were away for the winter. In the spring I called to cancel altogether. A month later I found they charged my credit card for a full month of full service. Many calls to their useless call centers (overseas, poor English, dropped calls) brought no satisfaction. I wrote to corporate HQ; today I received a call - no satisfaction ! He said there was a limit on the hold, which had expired before my cancellation. No one ever told me there was a hold limit when I arranged it.
Charter Bounces Refund Check Refuses to pay Return Deposit Fee by sabletoo ,Feb 04 '05
Pros: Already connected and no equipment charge. No reconnect fee. Cons: Poor customer service and unwilling to correct mistakes.
I had seasonal service with Charter at my summer home and every year I disconnect in the fall. Of course they bill ahead so they always owe me a refund. This year their refund check bounced because they had stopped payment on the check and reissued. After many phone calls I was told I had requested the check be mailed to a different address and so it was my fault and they refuse to pay the return deposit fee of $20.00. Both checks were sent to the same billing address! They refuse to respond to by BBB complaint and although the customer service responded to my letter to the CEO they have yet to get back with me and tell me the result. I will not be reconnecting this year and will instead use satellite!
is charter worth the hassle by mellokatattack ,May 21 '07

Only because my stupid roommate did not do his research... by ihatecharter ,Jan 20 '06
Pros: there is nothing good to say... Cons: everything about this company is a con...
Charter has some of the worst customer service i have ever encountered. i have been hung up on, refused to speak with a manager, and when i finally was able to they were rude and just kept repeating the same thing over like a broken record. our bill has been for a different amount each month. and not a single bill has been for the amount that we were quoted. they did not even get the installation price right (it was $40 more than they quoted us and they had the wrong equipment)! do everything you can to avoid Charter.
Good as long as you have no problems by pcs56 ,Aug 17 '07
Pros: Fast Internet, problems rare Cons: It ALWAYS takes days to resolve problems.
I have been with Charter for years and have had very few problems. HOWEVER, whenever I have had a problem, getting it resolved is a major undertaking. The biggest problems are customer support and getting someone to correct the problem. The service reps are not rude, just not helpful. They have never been able to resolve any of my problems. Then they tell you they will have to have somebody come look at it...in FOUR DAYS!!! So when you do have a problem, be prepared to be without cable/Internet for a long time.
Pros: Almost better than Radio. (Unless your favorite ball team is playing) Cons: Read the review
Only choose Charter if you have no other choice for the following reasons:
1. Poor phone service. They are pushy and rude. If you want information they will constantly try to sell you.
2. Poor visual quality using standard or digital service. Whether you use a regular 27" TV, or an HDTV, the results are the same, mediocre picture especially on larger displays. The truth behind their "digital" service is that few of the channels are true digital. I have a receiver that detects and switches digital sources. When flipping through the channels of Charter cable I noticed that it only detects digital audio capability on a scant few channels.
3. Unreliable/confusing billing process. You will definitely be assessed mystery charges, just plain eroneous charges, and everything in between at some point during your time with them. Some months they won't bill you at all and then make you pay double.
4. Unreliable internet service (in my area). There will be times (hours at a time) when our high speed internet does't work. We Can't explain it, Charter can't either.
Charter held me prisoner for 20 hours by ccbrewster ,Sep 20 '05
Pros: Friendly customer service personnel, who listened to me air out my frustration. Cons: They tell you to be home between 1-5pm, then come at 12:30. Never a note.
I am writing this after the fourth broken appointment of Charter Communications. I tried to buy cable from them, but they never showed up. Their customer service crew promised me time and again that someone would call me or stop by within a certain time frame. It never happened! They claim that I wasn't home when they came by. That is true. On two occasions, they came by outside of the appointment time slot. 12:30pm when the appointment was from 1-5pm. No note, so I waited for the whole time wondering when they would come by. This happened twice. After the second time, they told us that someone would hook up our cable within 24 hours. We stayed home all day, no call, no technician. I even called during this last appointment , waited on hold, and confirmed that someone will be here. They promised, then no one showed up. Anyone who reads this, don't go with Charter!!
Pros: THE people in the office seem to know the meaning of customer service. Cons: THE call centers.
NEVER call the customer service number. THEY don't know what to do. YOU get transfered to everyone else, and the supervisors hang up on you. I canceled my service. Charter took over astound in my area. I was excited about this however I was greatly disappointed.
Avoid Charter Communications! by mleewright ,Sep 19 '06
Pros: None. Cons: Non-existent customer service; Poor digital TV transmission; Static in sound; Constant hi-speed internet disconnects.
Charter Communications "Customer Service" is practically non-existent! You will pull your hair out- trying to get service out of this company. If you like not being able to find a working number, getting lost in long phone cues, no response to service requests; go for it. Charter Communications is lacking, plain and simple. "Hi Speed Internet" disconnects constantly. They say add our service plan for $5 a month and they will send someone out, now 3mos and no one has come! Bad digital TV signal, often pixelated, static and "popping" in TV sound. Etc., Etc. Save yourself the aggravation, go with some other provider.
I have been with Charter now for a while, they bought out Falcon in my area of Arkansas. My prices have steadily risen and the channel selection has steadily declined. Worthless channels for $52.11 a month. Now they are doing away with VH1, the Flix channel and have added the Style, BET, and Jewelry Channel. Sorry..not my cup of tea! I understand they are moving a lot of channels to their Digital package. To expensive for me..amd calling to cancel today!
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! by gwilson29630 ,Apr 06 '08
Pros: Can't think of any! Cons: Customer Service
I subscribe to Charter Cable Television and 5M Internet service. It does not matter what I call in reference to, they always find a way to screw it up!
Living in a rural area, Cable was the only option for high speed internet as other vendors (DSL, etc.) have not built their infrastructure in the rural areas. Once DSL is available, I will be dropping Charter's service and using DSL for internet and dish or direct for TV.
Awful customer service. This is a prime example of the complacency of a monopoly giant!
Charter routinely and suspiciously blocks CSPAN by aaluce ,Sep 25 '05
Pros: Absolutely terrible service and customer service. Cons: Charter censored political broadcasts not in keeping with their views.
Charter communications has blacked out all 3 Channels of CSPAN during the course of todays rally for military families in WASH, DC. This, although the channels were up and running right up until the 12:00 o'clock start of coverage. Charter is a terrible communications service, I will cancel service as soon as possible. They have repeatedly foisted their political views by censorship methods.
Bad package names, not many choices by bcozisayso ,Jun 25 '08
Pros: NONE Cons: Bad packages, Pricey, lack of information
Bad package names, not many choices. You will never know what you are paying for which package. Price keeps changing often. NOTHING listed on their website. Biggest scam cable provider.
Avoid Charter Communications - terrible service & quality by jwebernews ,May 11 '06
Pros: None Cons: Poor quality for price. Customer service & tech support poor. Weeks for tech help.
Charter Communications cable & Internet service is not worth the money or aggravation. Overpriced for the poor quality of service and the poor customer service.
If your cable is out it can take up to 48 hours for anyone to get back to you, and then you might have to wait 3 weeks to get a technical person to come out and fix the problem. To date, we have had 4 tech people out who would only give us the run around about our poor picture and sound quality.
Finally the last tech guy felt sorry for us and confessed that most people in our area/subdivision were experiencing the same problems because Charter needed to update and replace some wiring and components on their end, but he had no idea if and when they ever would do this.
God help you if you use their Internet service. Between outages and port attacks you'll spend more time pulling your hair out trying to deal with Charter then you will on the Internet.
Pros: None exist with this company. Cons: Where should I start?
If your only choice for Cable TV is Charter Communications then let me give you some friendly advice...MOVE.
I just moved into Birmingham, AL and have only had Charter for ONE MONTH and it has been the worst customer service experience I have ever dealt with from ANY company. Charter is Horrible!!!
May I highly recommend that you stay as far away from this company as possible.
I have told some of my friends about how the cable guy never showed up (even though I confirmed with a Charter Rep. that I did have an appointment) or when he did the equipment(a cable card) was defective and we had to schedule yet another appointment (like I have nothing else to do) and they just laughed and said "welcome to the world of Charter".
I went with Charter because they offer a discount if you get high speed Internet and Cable. (My Internet connection has been a nightmare) That is one decision I wish I could have back.
Fortunately for me I had other options. I went with Direct TV and life is back to normal.
Once again, do NOT choose Charter Communications.
Rental of Modem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by mamaz ,Nov 04 '09
Pros: can't think of any Cons: expensive tv service poor customer service odd installers... modem rental? free modem then NOT
I received a "free" modem when I started with charter.net back in the 90s. I notice on my bill they are charging me $3/mo rental fee!!!! They should bring me a new one as I have probably bought over 5 modems with my "fees" by now!!!!!! Check your bill. Try communicating with them...can't speak English well...and you end up at a dead end.
Charter, a Painful experience!!! by mkultra76 ,Apr 21 '06
Pros: None that I can think of. Cons: lousy reception, poor customer service, increasing bills, poor channel selection
I would seriously like to know how they can get away with such lousy service. The customer service reps are painful to deal with. For the past week, our cable reception has been going out on the t.v. hooked up to the actual cable box. The first time I called, the customer service rep told me to unplug everything and then plug it back in. So I did. It did not work. When my husband called back, they said that the soonest they could get someone out to check the line was in two weeks. Then when he threatened to cancel the service, they said a week and a half. Neither option was acceptable. Over the past two years, our bill has gone up and up and up, and they keep taking channels away from us and putting them on Digital Tiers that one must pay extra for. For their rude, obnoxious behavior, we are cancelling Charter's service (or lack thereof) and I am thrilled.
Pros: OK cable speeds Cons: Bad customer service, overpriced, hidden fees, a lot of money for little service.
Overpriced rates and bad service! They are very limited when it comes to giving you back double payments by mistake, they simply don't care and wont help you. They will say refund is not an option and their policies are ridiculous.
Their website is a confusing mess - try to find out about cable tv options and they only list packages with tv, internet, and phone. Call them and the experience is even worse. The operator I spoke with was rude and unhelpful. She said she couldn't tell me what TV options there were until I told her what channels I wanted to watch. They give plenty of reasons to help you understand why cable tv ranks near used car salesmen in terms of helpfulness.
Pros: Very FEW Cons: No competition and VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Good old charter cable.. If you have a good independant cable company, Cherish them! If the great god Charter gobbles them up, You will no longer talk to the friendly customer service rep 15, 20, or even 100 miles away!.. The great american Charter will send your calls to Manilla, Where someone who answers the phone will only know the words in the english language that the great god Charter allows them to know!
When Charter comes to your town and is GIVEN an exclusive franchise to operate in your area, they will charge you what they like and give terrible customer service...
Push your county and township boards NOT to allow exclusive contracts to cable companies, which by that action, will allow no competition to come to town!
Charter is your worst nightmare, especially when your payments have been lost... they want their money.. but let your cable line go bad and fall to the ground, they will be in no hurry to fix it. it took me 18 days,, and now a year later it is still strung across the ground where they laid it!!
Pros: I REALLY DONT THINK THEY HAVE ANY PROS WHATS SO EVER Cons: EVERYTHING FROM PRICE TO COSTUMER SERIVICE IS JUST OUT RIGHT BAD
i would not recommend charter to anyone, they have the worst costomer service ever!!!! they try to chrage for everything to include coming out to your house to fix their problems.
Pros: They have great ideas, but horrible service. Cons: Unreliable internet. Video on Demand plays like a very scratched up DVD.
Charter is horrible. I have been a customer for 5 years. The internet is unreliable and Video on Demand constantly plays like a scratched DVD. Also, whenever you try to pause on VOD, it will only stay paused between 3 seconds and a few minutes. Every time I call to complain they say it is the location I am in. I then say that I have lived in 3 different locations and have experienced the same problems. They then offer to send someone out and tell me that I will be charged if the problem is not on their end. The technician's usual solution is to put a new cable box in, which never fixes the problem. Most recently I have been getting a popping sound through my televisions while watching tv. The technician told me electric interference is causing the problem. He told me this after I turned off the power to the WHOLE HOUSE and had them use the generator in their van to power the televisions...and the popping sound was still there. IDIOTS!
Recommend avoiding charter communications in CT by trryn ,Sep 20 '06
Pros: internet mostly stable
a few sympathetic reps Cons: numerous installer no shows
many indifferent reps
A long time Charter High Speed customer, I decided to take them up on a bundle offer for cable, phone and internet.
Cable installation was promised for that Friday, with telephone the following week. Come Friday, no show, no call. We follow up- they tell us that we're rescheduled to the following Friday, at the customer's request. We assured them that was not so. An appointment was made for Monday- again, no show, no call. Profuse apologies offered from the rep, and we're given the next day from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.
Installer arrives at 5:10, surveys our set-up, and tells us: "They told me this was just an upgrade. I can't do this job". Installer leaves.
We call and cancel our internet, and cancel our phone request.
We are now going with AT&T, but we're facing red tape as Charter has not released the request we originally made to port our phone service.
Basic & expanded (approx. 70 channels) cable costs about $47/mo + tax, compared to $29.99/mo for satellite. Some channels in our area get interference from local stations and these channels (some of our favorites) vary from moderate to very poor picture and this changes all during the day. There is no pattern to the problems and we've been informed by their tech support that there is no fix.
Volume control is poor. Some stations very quiet, some loud. No fix available per tech support.
Billing dept. corrections seem to require a call regularly. Outage of service requires 2 calls - one to get the repair and a 2nd to get credit for the down time.
Hi speed Internet works most of the time - longest down time so far has been about 1 day.
Not happy with them at all - looking to go to other providers.
