Home owners insurance? Yeah....
by kerch ,Aug 21 '07
Pros: Awesome auto insurance, banking, credit cards Cons: Property insurance
Here's something to think about before you go with USAA on property insurance... The deductable is 1% of the coverage amount. Doesn't sound like much, but here you go. If your house is covered at $250,000 then your deductable is a whopping $2,500! And that is per-claim! I recently had a big tree fall over from a storm. Cost to have it cut down and removed $1,500. Cost out of my pocket...$1,500! The only way this insurance will ever pay is if there is major, major damage to your house. Hail storm? You will pay to replace your roof. Drive way blow up? You will pay to replace your driveway. Kids come by and set your wood fence on fire? You will pay to replace the entire fence. The only way you will get any money out of this policy is if your house burns down or is destroyed in a tornado. Something to think about, other insurance companies have much lower deductables. Check it out. Auto insurance, and other services are awesome. Property insurance with USAA seems to be a scam....

USAA Service is Very Disappointing
by dholden0117 ,Oct 04 '05
Pros: None that I can think of Cons: Employees are rude and unhelpful, no local agents or adjusters, slow service
I have been a USAA member for auto insurance since 1975 and was very satisfied with their prices and service, so a couple of years ago I switched my homeowners insurance to USAA too. This has turned out to be a major mistake. From my experiences with them over the past year or so, I have found that USAA is only interested in taking your money, and when you have a problem their employees are unhelpful to the point of rudeness. After hurricane Ivan last year USAA arbitrarily changed our deductible to 1% of the value of the home, and increased the policy premium. This is in Montgomery, Alabama not on the coast. We recently put our house on the market and after the home inspector said that there was evidence of hail damage the potential buyers asked that we have USAA check the roof. We asked USAA to look at it over two weeks ago, and they have delayed and dragged their feet on it until the closing on the house has had to be postponed. In my opinion USAA is still OK for auto insurance, but I would recommend avoiding them for homeowner's.

What's Happened to USAA?
by wbaker1 ,Dec 26 '08
Pros: Great sales pitch based on historical (more than 15 years) performance. Cons: Just another money grubber now.
I have USAA home and auto policies. When needed, USAA has failed to render that "service" on which we're sold. For example, I was strongly suggested to use their recommended repair facility instead of a reputable outfit in town. When USAA's repair facility took too long to repair my vehicle, at USAA's demand, I pay for the additional rental though rental was part of my fully paid coverage! USAA wrongly withdrew money from my checking account causing bounced-check fees to amass. Though I explained the situation, USAA didn't return my money until weeks later after they "reviewed the tape" (whatever that is). Money was returned but not fees and never was there an apology. On Christmas Eve, I'd left my checkbook at home but had my USAA Mastercard. With a credit limit approaching $20,000 and a payment of $4,000 in the previous month, I had no worries until my charge was declined. Christmas Eve, too late to get my checks, no presents for my family. USAA's response? "I understand, I'm sorry." Well, me too, except I'm not lying.

USAA sucks
by thedutch ,Mar 23 '04
Pros: Some agencies rate their service as great Cons: MAJOR hassles, different person each time you call, rates are high, timing is unreasonable.
My family has been with USAA for upwards of 40 years. Five years ago when I bought a house, I wanted to go with USAA but they would wanted me to do their work for them. Switch to today when I bought a new house and decided to give them another try as they have been bugging me to switch.
I close on Wednesday. Today, Monday, they inform me they won't insure my home unless I buy a new roof. Although there is not a problem with the current one and the current homeowners pay $750 year, the "great" USAA wants me to pay $1150, buy a new roof (in a matter of 2 days) and have a deductible of $1800.
I have perfect credit and have never had a claim.

USAA HOMEOWNERS BEWARE
by shelbysaab ,Oct 05 '04
Pros: Great Car insurance, don't use them for your house Cons: The are 25% higher than most other insurance companies in my area
I have used USAA for the past 14 years for my Home and Auto Insurance. This past year, USAA has decided that I was under insured and raised the replacement cost coverage on my house by $18,000 in May 2004 while I was deployed. That raised my premium by 22% in one year. However that wasn't good enough, 3 weeks ago they called me during dinner because that had some questions about my house. 1. Question do you have walls made of dry wall 2. Do you have floors, some pine, some tile, some vinyl. Do you have a roof, yes with 30 year shingles. Oh, well you need to raise your replacement coverage by another $100,000 and your annual premium is now doubled !!!
Oh, I live in Delaware, not Florida. I'm moving my insurance to Armed Forces Insurance Exchange. Sorry, USAA is off the hook.

love them for everything
by mepinion123 ,May 14 '04
Pros: price, price, price, and service! Cons: you have to be eligible to be a member
I am a loyal member and always assumed I had the best deals through them. When I bought my last house I thought I would go ahead and do some comparing. Wow. I couldn't believe just how good I have it. Great prices, great service. Can't imagine doing business with anyone else.
check out their website to see if you are eligible (usaa.com)

USAA Blows it AGAIN
by cheydogflies ,Oct 10 '08
Pros: Low rates Cons: Poor (that's an understatement) customer service, no continuity.
As a 13-year USAA member, I am cutting all ties with them. They were great with auto insurance in the early years, but now are poor. My mortgage experience in 2000/2001 was a life-changing awful event (at the fault of their branding to PHH). This year's homeowners policy woes are the last straw. Customer service? Not anymore. They are too big and no longer care about their "USAA Family." I even had a "manager" call me to discuss why I was canceling everything with them. He agreed that everything I said was true, and they simply cannot provide the level of customer service that they used to. Amazing! An attack of conscience?

Sorriest service anywhere.
by jmorr ,Mar 30 '09
Pros: None Cons: USAA
They don't care about customer service or customer loyalty for that matter. Was a loyal customer for 12 years. 6 years after a credit hiccup we were told to get lost. 6 years people. I will no longer recommend this company to ANYONE (unless I dislike them).
