Almost twenty years after my first summer as a counselor at Camp Kabeyun, I find myself looking out the window of my office daydreaming back to those summers.
Kabeyun is much more than a traditional boys' summer camp. Its mile of short-front property is nestled on the southern shore of Lake Winnepausakee in central New Hampshire. The focus of the camp has been, and continues to be different than most other camps I seen.
The focus on is the individual camper and not on competition. Team sports and activities are at a minimum. Campers can choose each morning and afternoon from a wide-range of in-camp activities such as the ropes course, sailing, canoeing, woodshop and drama. Counselors work on getting the campers to seek their own goals and discover their own interests.
Day trips and longer overnight trips are also scheduled throughout the week for mountain hiking, rock climbing and kayaking. The staff is extremely experienced, with some having experience as former NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) and Outward Bound instructors.
Chuck Mills, the director at Kabeyun, continues the passion and the goals of the founder, John Porter, in ensuring that Camp Kabeyun remains a special place.
