From the Quill of Brill

by sulkn , Oct 03 '01
Pros: Occasionally achieves it's goal and makes people think about the media.
Cons: Not enough interesting content, and a possible ironic conflict of interest in Contentville.
I subscribed to Brill's Content for a full year, and finally let my subscription run out a few months ago. Sadly, the publication just wasn't what I hoped it would be.

So, that said, what exactly is Brill's Content?

What's Next For Brill's Content? Please read on

by charles Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Mar 25 '00
Pros: A monthly magazine about the media; holds content creator accountable
Cons: Appears too harsh at times on some issues...
Steven Brill and his magazine appear to be where they are supposed to be when there is a breaking news. In the last two years or so, it appears to be on the forefront of the journalism world. If you care about what you read and watch on TV and the Net,...

Skepticism Is A Virtue!

by omar107 , Feb 22 '00
Pros: Exposes the truth about the media in mostly well-written articles
Cons: Some of the articles feel like filler
We trust the media emphatically, and some say it is because we have no choice. Not true. We can be as skeptical as we please, and still stay informed. If you were to read anything by political linguist Noam Chomsky, you'd discover that America isn't...

What you either already knew, or didn't need to

by kmennie Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 25 '99
Pros: Good for a literate teen-ager or eager but dense mass comm undergrad
Cons: As exciting as the differences between the Republicans and the Democrats
I've been reluctant to throw my two cents in here because I don't have a great deal to say that isn't echoed in the first epinion for Brill's Content: the premise is flawed, and who is watching Brill?

The curious thing about...

Independent? AS IF!

by FoolingAround , Apr 28 '00
Pros: printed on shiny paper with a high price
Cons: not worth the high price and shiny paper it is printed on
Interesting premise - critically examine the work of others and comment from an independent point of view. Perhaps a "Consumer Reports" for other news sources.

Poor Followthrough - This advertisement strewn journal (how can you...

Who watches the watchmen? The other watchmen.

by ErgoPropterHoc , Oct 27 '99
Pros: A little bit of detail into the background of media
Cons: The entire premise of this publication is flawed.
Brill's Content is all about keeping an eye on the media. The basic premise - that somebody should monitor journalists, reporters and content providers to ensure that they remain impartial and unbiased. In our modern era of corporate mergers and...

Leaves me contented

by anildash , Dec 01 '99
Pros: Insightful, Convenient, Entertaining
Cons: Not perfect, Pretentious
Yeah, yeah, yeah, the knee-jerk criticism is "But who watches Brill's?" And that's a valid point. But until we have a special "spot the conflict of interest" section of Epinions to rate the media, Brill's can effectively act as a...

A mixed bag...

by daniland01 , Dec 20 '99
Pros: great idea, good regular features
Cons: not consistent, average reports
I subscribed to Brill's this year (99) because I am very interested in the subject of corporate control of media & accurate reporting.

However, The magazine is a mixed bag.Pro regular features are pundit ranking, corporate control...

Often forgets its audience, but still a good magazine.

by DukeSunflow , Feb 17 '00
Pros: Good Articles, Low Price
Cons: Tends to have reports better suited for a less educated clientele.
Brill's Content is designed to be a media watchdog. It is filled with articles about journalism, from outrageous conduct of reporters to the hidden agendas behind our media companies that you may never hear about. It also reports on the companies...

The Truth...Nothing But?

by kabbate , Jan 22 '00
Pros: slick and interesting
Cons: hard to throw away
I am a charter subscriber to Brill's Content and really believe that every effort is made to tell it like it is and expose those who don't. I am tired of reading, watching and hearing the news distilled through someone else's opinion. Many of the...

False advertising

by Clumberguy , Dec 14 '99
Pros: reviews websites well
Cons: lacks confidence
I subscribed to Brill's Content several months ago, as it billed itself as a critical observer of journalism. However I find this to be far from the case. Most articles in most issues nit picked about minor points that the Brill's contributor admits has...

Questionably objective, unquestionably fascinating

by areiel , May 10 '00
Pros: Enlightening reading
Cons: Questionable objectivity
Brill's Content makes for great reading. I do not subscribe, but treat myself to a copy each month at the airport when I travel on business.

I cannot say that I have always found myself in awe of the magazine's objectivity. Many of their...

It's a Virtue

by cranberi , Oct 15 '00
Pros: refreshingly written, multifarious viewpoints, informative
Cons: It doesn't come out every month
I often meander into the nerd section of Barnes and Noble, where they keep the political and literary magazines. One day, as I stood next to a burly tweed-clad gentleman of about 60 who smelled strongly of tobacco, I noticed a magazine that I had never...

Declining, but still good

by DanielR , Jul 21 '00
Pros: Thorough. analytical articles
Cons: Possibly becoming too corporate and less watchdog
Brills Content has gotten a lot of criticism lately, between its copyright issues on its new website Contentville and its revamped editorial mission, decreasing its role as a watchdog. Still I find it to be one of the most thorough and complete...
