In the early 1960’s the BMW company faced a bleak future, full of doom, gloom, and obscurity. There had been no real innovation since the end of the Second World War, and they had little or no market penetration outside of their native Germany.
Pros: It is by far the best publication for the car collecting hobby Cons: none
Having been a collector of American Cars, I first encountered Collectible Automobile in the newsstand of the armed forces in Munich. That was the first issue ever released, back in 1984.
I was so impressed, that I immediately subscribed, and that...
Pros: First quality writing, photography, and production. Best of class! Cons: Expensive, but contains very little advertising.
There are hundreds of car magazines, but none compares with Collectible Automobile. I have had a lifelong love affair with cars. I'm no mechanic, and don't pretend to understand all the esoterica of engineering and specifications. But I do appreciate...
Pros: Gorgeous photography, printing. Authoritative and readable. Virtually no advertising. Cons: No significant discount for subscription.
For armchair fans of American cars, this is a wonderful magazine. The writers are knowledgable, and the photos are gorgeous. Good mix of historic photos and current restored cars. Impossible to overstate how much the first-class production, printing,...
Pros: great variety; in-depth articles; excellent writing Cons: high cover and subscription prices
I got hooked on Collectible Automobile magazine with the first issue that I picked up in a bookstore in 1984. I immediately subscribed, and have never let my subscription lapse in almost 17 years. The magazine has never disappointed me. The variety of...
Pros: A beautiful classic which drives beautifully and is quite safe Cons: It is a gas guzzler
I found this car in 1990 with a real 30,000 miles on it. It was in cherry shape. The old man who kept it but never drove it had all the service papers in a folder. His daughter inherited it but could not fit it in the garage. I found an excellent...
The Cadillac-BMW-Lexus-Ferrari-Mercedes of magazines! by paman ,Feb 11 '04
Pros: Superb coated heavy weight paper, documentation quality photography, Smithsonian-quality research and documentation. Cons: None, really, other than I wish it came out monthly.
The best researched, written and photographed car magazine in the world! AND--no advertising!
CARS: This magazine takes the reader from the first drawings of a car's creation or redesign. Early pre-production or clay model photos are included. The model is covered in unbelievable detail, including sales figures, available options, how it sold when introduced and more. Finally, it gives a comprehensive look at promo items such as brochures and scale models, and a guide to its' current value. The information is timeless and accurate. The photos are the finest you will find outside of a museum.
PEOPLE: Often the people behind a car are as interesting as the car itself. Did you know, for example, that the first Thunderbird was almost called something else? Did you know that the idiot Robert McNamarra almost killed the Lincoln Continental when he was a bean-counting so-called "whiz kid" while he was at Ford? This is the kind of human interest and detail you will find in this magazine.
This magazine is a car lover's oasis in a dry desert of condensed, rushed-to-press magazines that are often 60%-70% advertising.
