Pros: Excellent acting, well plotted thriller Cons: Overly nostalgic tone
It took me a long time to get around to seeing "LA Confidential", despite an impressive list of accolades following it's original 1997 release, including two Academy Awards and numerous nominations. I wasn't very familiar with the actors at the time...

Pros: Fantastic performances, fine direction and storytelling Cons: Basinger's overrated performance, the very, very end is a little preposterous
Curtis Hanson's stylish crime thriller was overwhelmingly embraced by critics in late 1997, but pretty roundly ignored by audiences, despite its big name cast. Then, when it looked that at least after it won some awards people might recognize,...

Pros: everything....this film has it all Cons: none
Released in 1997, LA Confidential is one hell of a good movie. In fact if it weren't for a little film called Titanic that was released the same year, it most certainly would have captured the Oscar for Best Picture. Nevertheless, it ...

Pros: Great performances. Challenging themes. Masterful direction. Well written, considering difficulty of source material. Cons: An occasional plot hole.
Troma Studios sent me the latest script revisions for 'Toxy Foxy', the musical sequel to 'The Little Foxes' in which I would play Regina after he big move to Chicago, where she makes a new fortune in hazardous waste and teams up with something called the...

Pros: Pearce, Crowe, Bassinger, and Spacey,..screenplay, direction performances : entertaining mystery Cons: none really-or all of it. Watch it carefully
While the subject matter of this film kept me away from it for 3 years, I was inevitably drawn back to take a look, based on another movie by the same director ,Wonder Boys(2000), which has become one of my favorite movies.
I'm glad I came...

Pros: excellent story that keep you tuned in, great acting... you need more? Cons: first half hour might not hold everyone's interest
L.A. Confidential is a movie that never really intrigued me. I had heard about it, heard it was good, knew it had gotten mostly favorable reviews, yet I had never felt the urge to watch it. Yet, one day a few weeks ago, Netflix (...

Pros: great acting, great story, lots of surprises Cons: some detective work “too brilliant” to believe
(** This DVD would make a nice Christmas gift for someone **)
I was in Hollywood last week to see a play at the Pantages Theater, and as I was walking to the ticket office I came upon the Frolic Room bar, as featured in the great 1997...

Pros: Excellent cast; gloomy atmosphere; excellent writing and direction. Cons: None that I can think of right now.
Many consider the film noir to have died in 1958 after Orson Welles made Touch of Evil. It was deemed so perfect that no one really took a stab at true noir again. However, in the late 60's and early 70's, the noir revived as the crime film. It...

Pros: Terrific performances, stylish direction. Cons: None whatever.
Take 'Babe's' Farmer Hoggart, an actor from an Australian soap opera, two actors from 'Batman' films and a couple of guys whose careers would really take off a couple of years later. Stick them in fifties LA and film the results.
'LA...

Pros: Great acting, great story Cons: can't think of any
When LA Confidential came out a few years ago, I was less than anxious to see it. How wrong I was. It was suspenseful, the acting was superb and the story line, although not incredibly deep, was very interesting. I can see why it was nominated for ...

Pros: Intriguing plot twists, tremendous acting, wonderful cinematography, and a stylish tribute to the noir genre. Cons: This movie has a complicated plot which definitely requires more than one viewing in order to understand all of its nuances.
Detective Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is a dedicated police officer who is more than happy to go that extra mile to solve the case. Det. Bud White (Russell Crowe) is another tough police detective who's very temperamental but nonetheless gets the job...

Pros: Russell Crowe, characters, direction, script Cons: didn't get more awards
"LA Confidential" is a breath of fresh air for me, the teenage film buff. I have ransacked the video stores watching old classics and Oscar winners and a lot of the newer ones. And I noticed an annoying trend that maybe I alone believe in. Back...

Pros: Beautifully shot, meticulously detailed, well acted Cons: Labored, stretched-thin plot
I caught "L.A. Confidential" on television last night. It aired on CBS and I wanted to check it out again to see if I missed something. I had rented the movie (which Time magazine picked as the best film of 1997) a while back and felt...
