The Hanging Garden - Coming To Terms With Your Childhood

by kristinafh Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Aug 04 '02
Pros: Teenage actor Troy Veinotte.
Cons: Ending wrapped up way too tidy.
When you think about the movies that I watch (and if you know anything about this movie), you're probably scratching your head wondering what would even possess me to rent it.

I have no explanation except this - I've been feeling very...

We Are All Ghosts of Our Respective Pasts

by metalluk Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Aug 15 '05
Pros: Entertainingly eccentric characters; good performances; black humor; interesting themes; good visuals and Irish fiddlin'
Cons: Lack of full control of temporal shifts and style changes
Continuing my survey of some top Canadian films, I turn next to the debut film of American-born, Canadian director Thom Fitzgerald. Historical Background: Thom Fitzgerald was born in New Rochelle, New York but has done all his filmmaking in ...

Dangling Cliches in The Hanging Garden

by ccoggins , Feb 02 '00
Pros: Canadian flick, balance of comedy and drama, intense realism sometimes tongue-in-cheek.
Cons: Disturbing moments on the drama side, but preferred over the blatant violence produced in Hollywood.
Indeed The Hanging Garden is a film full of color and richness as the camera captures both the drama and humour of an extremely dysfunctional - but all too real - modern day family.

Filmed in broken sequences, Director Thom Fitzgerald...

A movie MEANT to be over analyzed

by sawasdee , Sep 06 '00
Pros: Thought provoking, deep, makes you think about what life was like forthe characters
Cons: confusing at times. Not a 'fun' movie.
I watched this movie because it was a requirement for an english clas I took - Gender and Sexuality in Film. We watched it, we took copious notes, and we analyzed it to death. But I'll say this much. Of all the movies we watched, this one needed the...

Walking Through The "Garden"

by MovieBodega , Apr 29 '00
Pros: Excellent screenplay, centered performances
Cons: A little soap-operatic and overblown at times
The winner of the 1997 Toronto Film Festival and a multiple Genie Award nominee, THE HANGING GARDEN is one of the most thoughtful films of the decade. With wildly original flashback sequences (that remain on view when we jump into the present), we're...

by SusanGranger Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Mar 11 '00

Emotional Haunt

by Harpo63 , Apr 25 '00
Pros: Emotional and provocotive
Cons: Slightly low budget.
I rented the 'Hanging Garden' on the high recommendation of a friend, and was quite pleasantly surprised.

The Hanging Garden deals with the return of a very stable and sensitive gay man, after ten years away from his family, to attend the...

The Hanging Garden

by penbar , Jan 12 '00
Pros: Beautifully dark and heartbreaking. Also sinisterly funny.
Cons: None
THE HANGING GARDEN: Dark comedy/drama. It is amazing that writer/director Thom Fitzgerald’s "The Hanging Garden" is so beautifully dark and heartbreaking while also managing to be sinisterly funny. When Sweet William (Chris Leavins) returns...
