Pros: good-enough warning, will pay for itself with one successful alert Cons: Somewhat large, not shipped with a visor clip (same with all bel/escort detectors)
This is a fairly decent detector, especially considering the price. It falses for grocery stores...but most detectors do; the City LoX helps a lot in places like that. I usually use Autoscan in town, but at times City LoX is necessary. Where I live ...
Pros: its inexpensive, looks cool. Cons: Weak sensor, Cell phone sets it off, cheaply made power cord.
Let me preface this by saying this was the first radar detector I have ever owned. But so far, i'm unimpressed. I have three main gripes with this detector. One, my cell phone sets off the laser detection on this thing every time it changes cells or ...
Pros: Excellent features like VOICE and EASY TO READ DISPLAY. Also very easy to hear. Cons: Below par KA PHOTO RADAR DETECTION! Smile for the camera!
I just purchased a Bel RX55 detector for about $200. Please keep in mind I also own a BEL 980, so obviously I am spoiled, and I'm going to compare the two. Before purchasing this RX55 detector, I did a lot of research, to find it had "remarkable" ...
Pros: Great price for all the features Cons: Filter is 8 out of 10, you get what you pay for
I recently bought a RX55 from Cardomain. The price was $229 with not tax or shipping. I had it in two days. I could have bought it on eBay for $177 plus $15 for shipping. So for an extra $30 I bought it from a reputable dealer. I did a lot of research ...
Pros: Great Price, Great Performance. Good Features with integrated voice alert. Cons: Compared to Passport 8500 it produces a little more false alerts.
This Radar Detector from Beltronics is super HOT!!! I'm no lazy reviewer who is just feeling like writing junk. Hear me out... Over the past year I've tested several Radar Detector Units and here is the bottom line: Cobra Radar Detectors will do if you ...
OK on Radar, Laser got me busted. by p25416 ,Jun 03 '08
Pros: Fair price, reliable, Ka works well. Cons: Poor laser sensitivity.
I have had mine for about 3 years and it seemed to work fine. Sensitivity was OK. False detect at grocery store motion detectors was common. I have not had the cell phone issue others have had. X and Ka detect were fine. Laser however never triggered and I got a ticket this morning. It was powered and working and pointed the right way so I have to believe that it was poor at detecting that signal.
Pros: POP alerts (have not seen it working though) Cons: False alerts, poor support
Pro: POP alerts (have not seen it working though)
Cons:
1. Tons of false alerts on Laser with a cell phone in the car. I had different cell phone models, all of them trigger Laser band during conversation. Very annoying.
2. No way to turn Laser alerts off. And it always comes at a full blast because is considered a high threat.
3. Bel wouldn't admit to the problem, even though I saw other people complaining about the same thing.
4. (minor) New connector type (RJ11). Forget about using your old wiring when upgrading to Bel "Professional" radars.
I still have my Bel 985 and it sure is of a better quality.
RX65's little brother - Great detector by tronik ,Sep 04 '05
Pros: Great performance for the price Cons: X-band delete only works in CITY mode
I considered a lot of RDs before settling on this, seemed a good compromise between price and performance. Obviously, if money were no object, I'd go for one of the 'Big 3' [the BEL RX65, Valentine V1 or Escort 5800].
I have only had it for a few days, but has already saved me from a potential infringement notice, detecting a Ka band radar at quite a range [2km + over a hill].
The layout of the buttons is simple and intuitive and the manual is fairly well written. The display has excellent brightness, even in full sun; and can be adjusted down to a more suitable level for night driving. Also has a 'dark' mode which essentially just gives audible alerts.
I liked my 20 year old Uniden better by gfriedman99 ,Aug 13 '07
Pros: Price
Loudness Cons: False alarms
Questionable value of Autoscan mode
Loudness
After having my trusty Uniden detector for many years I thought it was time to upgrade. Got the RX55 - turns out to be a downgrade. I've had this unit a year now and it is just plain annoying. Switching from city to highway or autoscan mode makes NO difference - they all react the same. This unit will make your ears bleed with all the false alarms and its annoying chirps.
Pros: Display-which are easy to read and the ease of use of the unit overall. Cons: None that I can think of this baby suits my needs just fine
I had a Bel-980 for the last four years and it finally went out on me. I called Bel and they told me about a trade in program they were offering for old Bel detectors. So I decided to try the RX55 and I must say I'm glad I bought this unit, the controls are easy to navigate thru and it works like a charm. Update-To the e-mails I recieved about my comments on this unit. 1.Thanks to the guy who informed me about the volume control switch on this unit, that was an oversite on my part.2. To the gentlemen who sent me a comparison of this unit with the Escort, I used to have an Escort(two early models) and they were both great but if I wanted an Escort I would have bought one!
Pros: Range, simplicity, cost Cons: Alarm is too loud
This detector is awesome.
After driving from SF to Boston with an old Bel 745 last fall (and picking up a hefty ticket in Nebraska), it was time to step up to something new. Many older and cheaper detectors don't pick up Ka radar (the most difficult to detect) in time for the driver to react, a fact which I learned on the highway.
I picked up the RX55 in preparation for the return trip in early May. The RX55 performed admirably, yielding plenty of time to slow down given X, K, and Ka radar.
My advice - buy this detector and wave to the cop as you drive by!
Pros: Terrible quality and performance Cons: Quality, performance, lacking features.
Bel RX55 may look similar to the Bel RX65 but it is different on the inside, antenna and software are different. Ka detection on all type on roadways was poor. This unit false more then the Bel RX65 has far less range and less features. If your going to buy a Beltronics by the Bel RX65 has the same antenna and circuit board as the Escort 8500 X50 plus it detects Ku radar and has voice alert which Escort 8500 X50 does not. Cheaper radar detectors suffer when it comes to detecting Ka radar. Software and proper antenna design are not cheap.
