A Very Popular Choice: Martin D-28 Guitar

by George_Chabot George_Chabot is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Musical Instruments, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jun 24 '06
Pros: Reputation, hard shell case, good for players with small hands
Cons: High price for the trim level, soft easily damaged finish, sound tends towards bass
Martin D-28 Guitar When you can play acoustic guitar any way you want, you tend to gravitate to one of two options; you can choose a large Gibson, which many people swear by, or you can choose a Martin, which also has many advocates; the most ...

The Martin D-28: One Thing Commies and Rednecks Agree About

by Horswispr Horswispr is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Musical Instruments, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Aug 09 '00
Pros: bold, rich sound; stays in tune; hammers and pulls sound great
Cons: a bit bassy for some delicate finger-picking tunes; don't get too close to the mic!
The Martin D-28 is the standard against which all other flat-top acoustic guitars are measured. If you’ve ever listened to bluegrass music, folk music, or even New Age guitar music, odds are you’ve listened to a Martin D-28. Lester Flatt, of Flatt and ...

A Religious Experience in Your Own Home

by buffoonery buffoonery is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Musical Instruments, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 15 '04
Pros: One of the finest acoustic guitars available
Cons: Cost. Many bucks, esp for vintage models
As as number of reviewers of the Martin D-28 have already written, this acoustic guitar is a flatpicker's dream. Horswispr has already written a terrific review of this beautiful machine and I'll try not to duplicate his musings, but I'll add a few of ...

by LILvoyce Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Jun 11 '03
Pros: Sound is the best.
Cons: No cons!!!!!
I have been playing the guitar for the past 15 years. I have played and owned many. I have never been truly happy until I met up with my Martin D-28. I chose to purchase a Martin D-28 for several reasons. I had looked at different guitars, and ...

A Classic Box - A Flat Pickers Dream

by Gr8ful Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Aug 08 '00
Pros: Excellent sound quality in a beautiful piece of wood.
Cons: Expensive but worth every cent.
The Martin D-28 is the classic flat top guitar most popular in bluegrass music, but used widely across the board by many talented musicians. The Dreadnaught series of Martin guitars are the backbone of the company and make up the bulk of the...

I wasn't looking for a Martin

by medonte , May 24 '08
Pros: Unbelievable sound and build quality.
Cons: No front strap button. That's it.
I wasn't looking for a Martin; I wanted a Guild or a Gibson. Our drummer went out of town for a month, so we decided that we'd "get back to our roots" and play an acoustic set (Honky-Tonk Rock, electric Bluegrass, Rebel Country). The other guitar ...

THE measuring stick!

by davidtrabue , Jul 21 '00
Pros: Full, rich sound - great neck!
Cons: Rosewood looks too dark-chocolate these days.
This is the standard by which all modern acoustic guitars are measured. If you talk to anyone who has seriously been in the acoustic performing arena, no matter what they currently play, they will eventually make a comparison to "an old D-28 I...

Still the best dread out there

by Goodheart00 , Oct 31 '00
Pros: Classic design; perfect tone for their class; non-scalloped braces for clear, un-muddied voice.
Cons: Not as fancy looking as other models, but I play guitars for how they sound and feel. Not how they look.
With all the guitar makers out there going on and on about "vintage" features and scalloped braces, etc etc. I have to say you just don't find a better flat picking guitar as the standard Martin D-28.

Maybe it is because I grew up...

Martin's Secret

by monstar99 , Nov 21 '05
Pros: The Martin D-28 is a fine sounding guitar.
Cons: The downgraded fingerboard and bridge sacrifices the D-28's visual symmetry and trademark look.
When you bought a Martin D-28, you bought a classic, unmistakable look. I just picked up my special-order Martin D-28 at Guitar Center two days ago, but I'm making arrangements to return it tomorrow. Consumers should be aware that the specs for the ...

Deal ... or No Deal?

by varthold , Jul 04 '07
Pros: The infamous Martin "bark," strong bass, treble, mid-range.
Cons: It's pretty darned pricey.
I had wanted a Martin dreadnought since I started playing guitar, and finally came into enough money to buy one. It was replacing a 30-year-old Sigma DM-5, which had been very well cared for. The interesting thing was, in a blind comparison, it was ...

As professional as they come

by checkthis , Mar 26 '01
Pros: Great sounding instrument that gets better with age. A joy to play.
Cons: Martin's customer service leaves something to be desired
Martin makes a great guitar. Hands down, and for years the D-28 has been the box of choice for leading musicians. With a great midrange and bass response, it has a very characteristic tone that is appreciated especially in the bluegrass field, though...

Like a fine Wine

by hbrotha3 , Sep 13 '00
Pros: stamina, playability
Cons: size
Im probably the first to review any guitar after 10 years of having one. This was the first guitar i bought, and the last one i really need. When i purchased it, it was tan, almost off white in color, now, it is a beautiful honey brown. I guess the...

The Martin D-28 ("D" is for dream!)

by fenderman1 , May 23 '02
Pros: Wonderful sounding guitar that will last a lifetime if cared for properly.
Cons: Expensive guitar that will bite into anyone's budget.
Well, this is the guitar by which all other dreadnoughts are compared. Originally the D-2 (many years ago) this handcrafted gem made of solid Indian Rosewood, Sitka Spruce, Mahogany and Ebony is an absolute dream to play and own. We all know the story...

When you are ready to play with the big boys get a Martin HD-28

by larryguitar , Dec 23 '05
Pros: Sound. Construction. Beauty.
Cons: Cost but you should stay home if you don't wanna go big.
I have been playing guitar for more than 35 years. My collection includes a Gibson J45 and an Alvarez Yiari 12 string. When I was younger I just wanted to be the fasted picker on the block. But that's not really music. Now I'm more interested in the ...
