At about the size of a small hardback book, the Audiovox D1730 Portable DVD Player is an excellent choice in movie enjoyment for on-the-road or on-the-go folks. Granted, it is not as cheap as most home DVD players, but it comes in way under the prices...
Pros: size, clarity, portability are great, it's been flawless playing. Cons: Audiovox does not support it's 1 year warranty. Pricy repair ($186) for plastic hinge.
My wife has the DVD1500 and it's been perfect for a few years. I wanted the newer screen of the D1730, and it's viewing has been perfect. Very good sound, all the needed cables for the car. Pricy I think. But for viewing and portability I give it 4...
Pros: good picture, sound and price. Cons: screen flickers when you move it. Overheats after a short use.
I've only used it 3 times prior to now, the other 3 times I only watched about 1hr and 30 minutes total of movies. Well I just watched about 30 minutes of a movie last night and it overheated and the backlight went out. Thought maybe it was a fluke,...
Pros: outstanding clarity, different viewing formats available, can be seen clearly from all angles, great accessories. Cons: volume is clear and nice but could be just a little louder
I am in the military and often find myself traveling to area's without accessible television viewing and this was a great investment to have at those times I had nothing. It was compact enough to carry with me and had a great picture even a near blind...
Pros: cheap, includes car adapter, 5 hour battery Cons: freezes, and skips, sound quality, must use remote
This is my second try at the Audiovox 1730. This one has the exact same problems as the previous one I owned. It freezes and skips after about an hour and a half of viewing a DVD. I searched a few of the Forums on the Net, and found others are ...
Pros: Solidly built, can use it overseas and it has a car plug. Cons: Very poor color in dark scenes.
I bought this at Costco a few weeks ago and have already returned it because of poor color.
The unit seems to be built solidly. It is aluminum wheras most of the other units I have looked at are plastic.
It comes with a plug for your car, which is nice and will work with 120-240 volts. It can travel overseas, which some of the more expensive units cannot.
You can fast forward and rewind only with the remote. Without the remote, you can only skip back and forth between chapters. I did not use the battery, so I can't comment on it.
The sound is excellent, especially with headphones. While using in a car, we didn't need headphones.
The main problem I had was that in any scene that was slightly dark, it washed the colors out so badly that at times it looked black and white. I tried all the settings and adjustments and could not get this any better. If I want a DVD player, the color is important. The picture was crisp and clear, but the color did it for me. I have returned it and have bought a Panasonic.
Pros: great picture, lightweight, good size, good price Cons: less than perfect speakers (good through headphones)
I purchase this unit from Costco for $280.00. It has a great picture but the speakers are not up to par with the rest of the unit. The battery uses an odd set up to charge, but after, it attaches to the back of the unit and stays out of the way. I had one problem with the picture freezing up an any DVD I played. It did this with the battery and the ac cord. Costco exchanged the unit for me and no problems yet. The unit is easy to use and comes with all the cables and adapters. You can use it as a component or stand alone. I recommend buying a good case to carry it in and either an extra battery or charger. Costco has a liberal return/exchange policy so if the problem occurs again, I will get another. My brother in-law purchased a portable for well over $300 and this plays as well if not better.
Pros: Size was wonderful and easy to use. Picture quality was good. Price was very fair. Cons: Only problem was the DVD picture freezing up.
We exchanged the 1st Model 1730 because the DVD picture froze using the AC adapter--tried 3 brand new DVD's on this unit with the same results and the freezing picture problem continued to be more frequent.
2nd unit froze on us while using battery power. No amount of powering off/on allowed us to finish watching the DVD.
Great Price, but had problems with picture freeze. by utbh ,Feb 23 '04
Pros: Price, came with all needed cables including s-video and component, good battery. Cons: Disk freeze, cheap feeling hinges.
I bought this unit at Costco for $280 in October of 2003. It seemed to be a pretty good deal, and I liked that the car cord was included. The very first disk in the player froze up about an hour into playback. This was a rental from Blockbuster so I wasn't too concerned, some rental disk are in pretty rough shape. After returning home from the trip I was on I tried several different disks, some worked great, but most would freeze up at some point. Several of these were brand new disks right out of the case. The was especially frustrating because I had purchased the unit to keep my 7 year old entertained on a long trip we were taking. She didn't deal well with her brand new copy of Lilo & Stitch continuously freezing. By December Id had enough, a great deal isn't such a great deal if the player doesn't work. Costco gladly took the player back, I would have tried another unit, but they were sold out.

I have spent the last five to six years looking
for a portable DVD player that can bring it all.
Price, screen size, sound, weight, DC adapter and picture quality. This player has it all. I
bought the 1730 off the inernet for $450.00 and it out performs my brother's $800.00 DVD player. You can't go wrong with this one and best of all it comes with a DC adapter. Most of the other makers have you spend 100-150 dollars for the additional option (rip off). I have played many hours on this player and it works to perfection every time!!! Get this player, you won't go wrong. Now my brother wants to send his back and get this one.

After using my brother's Panasonic... by homeseller_dt3000 ,Dec 27 '02
After using my brother's Panasonic Palm Theatre on a road trip this past summer and finding no bloodshed between my 2 girls I was amazed a little machine could give me so much peace.
I decided to get hem one for Xmas. After much research (can't swing a $1500 Panasonic) we decided on this unit (at $359). I've seen many negatives about Audiovox units but I am very impressed and so is my brother.
It's not as sleek as his but than again neither is a minivan as sleek as a Ferrari.
A word of caution. This unit almost went back due to poor instruction manual. When playing widescreen DVDs the actual picture was only 1.5 x 3".
It must be set to "widescreen tv" or it does not work properly. Instructions are poor.
There are many options for sound and output etc. Everything you need is in the box unlike many other products.
I've noticed many reports of Audiouvox units getting very hot skipping etc. It barely gets warm and unless you wack it quite hard it won't skip.
