Pros: Fast, efficient, and good print quality Cons: Can't be shared with Macs
I bought one of these for home use and I liked it. Its small, quiet, and efficient (some might find the simple paper tray cheap but I found it cute or clever). It was fast and the print quality was good. It was about as much as I could expect for ...

What a terrific Printer !
by fireted ,Mar 10 '05
Pros: Small, Inexpensive, quiet, fast and reliable Cons: No USB cord ships with the unit !
Bought the 1012 to replace a Personal Laserwriter printer (apple) that finially died after 10 years of heavy heavy heavy service ! The ease of set-up for this little guy will astonish you. Using a Mac, I expect nothing else from HP that simplicity and ease of use. Since Plugging in and filling the paper tray, I have printed off about 1500 sheets. The speed and print quality is superb so such a well priced unit. I have fed #10 envelopes, 3x5 cards, A4 envelopes, labels and more since getting this unit, they all feed evenly, and straight. I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting a fast, inexpensive, small laser jet printer that folds up when not in use to take up even less desk space !

Affordable laser printer
by mbrand214 ,Oct 05 '05
Pros: Inexpensive for a laser, reasonably fast, acceptable text output Cons: nothing serious
I've been using the 1012 as my sole work printer for about 6 months. I use it for text output and am pleased with it. I selected this model after an extensive online search for an inexpensive laser printer by a manufacturer with a good service rating (based on PC Magazine survey data). For the price, the 1012 seemed like the best choice and based on my experience with it I think I made a good choice.
I give it 4 stars (instead of 5) because it could use a larger paper tray and could be quieter. The sound is no worse than most laser printers and is only notable when printing (it is nearly silent between print jobs).

Even though this printer prints smoothly
by thoaingan ,May 11 '04
Pros: Prints smoothly, fast, and quietly Cons: Doesn't pull paper straight
and I'd have to agree to the other reviews, I have to give it a 2 because of all the trouble it has given me. The problem I'm having with it is the way it pulls paper, especially Avery Label paper. The 1st time a sheet goes through, it's not too bad. Yet the 2nd time the same sheet is used, it's totally misaligned. I used the Label Template from MS Word (which worked perfectly fine with other printers) to create labels. When the labels are printed, they are so off from where they should be. I have to manually adjust margins etc. and waste tons of paper. The first line on the sheet is totally slanted (by about 5-10 degrees) and I have no way of fixing this.
My boss bought me this printer so I have to use it. Otherwise I'd have traded it for something else.

Very Fast Printer
by mcpagano2 ,May 15 '04
Pros: Very fast printer, very quiet and very small footprint, excellent price (about $150) Cons: No USB cable and written instructions should be in the box not just pictures
One of the fastest printers I have ever seen. Excellent printer. Installation was easy with Windows XP Pro. No noise , very quiet printing, and very small laser printer (about the size of the average ink jet. Does not come with USB cable, but easy to pick one up. Best laser printer for the price.
Recommend turning off anti-virus and firewall software during installation. Recommend setting up computer, but don't plug it in, and then install software.
Only fault is no written instructions in box (just pictures), you must install software to be able to read instructions. Although it is pretty easy to put it together even just using pictures

Great for printing checks
by glenn_welt ,Feb 15 '05
Pros: Compact, 10 second startup Cons: Check paper doesn't always feed straight and sometimes jams (Lexmark E232 is better)
I've found this to be one of the fastest (start-up in 10 seconds), decent 15ppm printing, Also found a website that can deliver magnetic toner cartridges overnight for this printer. checksnet.com sells a MICR toner cartridge that is also filled with triple the amount of toner, which makes it cheaper than buying 3 cartridges from Hp. Took a few test checks to Bank of America and their reader showed that the bank symbols and numerals read perfectly.

Fast fast fast, but not quite perfect
by jcullison ,Dec 24 '04
Pros: Very fast printing. Easy to load paper. Relatively small. Low cost per page. Cons: Single button press by toddler prints a test page. Slightly crooked paper feed.
I bought this because of the low price, small size, and track record of HP printers. It's great for doing quick documents where you need to get the paper and go. Keep out of reach of toddlers because there is a green go button on it that prints a test page with one easy press, and the toddler is rewarded with a nice picture of a zebra on the test page. Paper is easy to load, and holds a fair amount for a home office. It does not always feed paper exactly straight, but it is not easily noticeable. Glad I bought it! No more inkjet cartridges drying out or getting clogged!

Just short of perfect
by cpthefbi ,Feb 12 '05
Pros: Quick & reliable Cons: Often feeds paper crooked
Excellent printer, quality documents but it does have a tendency to pull the document crooked. This very frustrating when printing on high quality paper, check blanks and etc. HP got close but just missed the mark.

Not such a great printer after all
by mrfabulous ,Jun 15 '05
Pros: Low cost. Cons: Frequent Unsupported Personality PCL errors after 10-15 prints.
There's a great forum discussing the problems with this little printer. You'll find it at:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=593115
Not a bad printer when it's working right. Appears HP isn't doing anything about it either. Typical.

Best low-end laser printer
by nicolaim ,Apr 25 '05
Pros: Excellent print quality, speed, paper handling. Cons: Genuine HP toner expensive. Minor issues explained in my review.
This is the best low-end laser in my opinion, even though it isn't perfect. Print quality is excellent. Speed too (11 seconds to first page out in my case.) It is relatively quiet, small, has an insanely great manual feed paper tray which holds ten pages, and the HP brand is worth something too. On the down side, I had paper curling at the edges until I adjusted the paper type in the driver properties. There is a clunking noise after printing. Pickup roller needed cleaning after a year. Toner didn't last 2500 pages. Can be had on special for C$225 or under C$200 when price-matching Staples to a Futureshop special :)

A great printer
by mercurman ,Jan 06 '08
Pros: Good graphics, fast, great features. Cons: I can't think of one
I have two these printers, and I love them both! Both are still running great, even though I have owned one for over six years and the other one for four years.
I have never had a single problem, hardware or software.

very good, after 5 months of use. No problems as of yet
by stocktrader ,Dec 24 '05
Pros: very reliable, quiet, high quality printing, fast. Cons: does not come with USB but no big deal..see notes at end of my review.
Got this printer as an floor display at Circuit City. Paid only around $100.00 and came with the special clear blue paper "cover" no extra charge. This works great to keep the dust off the paper supply.
I originally bought the 1021 (I think) the newer version but could not stand how white it was compared to the new black computer and monitor I just bought so I returned it hoping to find the older darker model.
I love this printer, great for printing small text, checks and simple graphics. It's fast, and doesnt smear and streak like inkjet.
Did not come with USB, but this is no problem because you can pick them up on ebay for around $2.50 or even at the 99 cent store (I found lighted color Belkin's there). Only the big retailers like Best Buy or Circuit City rip you off with this stuff and charge like $25.00 or more.

Good for the money, though lacking in robustness, features
by llh3zip ,May 29 '05
Pros: Bargain price, fast when it works Cons: No parallel port, software flaky.
I bought this one to replace an aging laserjet IIP+ I originally paid over $800 for 13 years ago.
A couple of things with it. Set up is not straightforward. With windows2000, it says to install the software 1st, then the printer. This is partly true, the printer has to be connected and powered on for the software to detect it.
Secondly, after installing I noticed it had disrupted the installation of an Epson Stylus Usb printer, so I had to reinstall the inkjet printer. Later, I was printing with the 1012 and it crashed in the middle of the print job. Upon rebooting my ability to print with the 1012 was gone. The online manual indicated I should reinstall the software when this happens.
Calls to HP put me in touch with a fellow with a thick accent who basically gave me scripted answers. His recommendation was to go to the HP site under troubleshooting.
As I mentioned in the title it is missing some features, one is a parallel printer port. The other is lack of memory upgradability. But then again you are getting a laser printer for $150.

Best printer I have owned...never going back to inkjet
by tmat2005 ,Jan 02 '05
Pros: print quality, speed, low noise, economical, value Cons: none so far.
I have owned my laserjet 1012 for nearly 6 months now. This is my first experience with a personal laser printer. Before, I used an Epson multi-function printer whose heads always clogged. Before the multi-function Epson, I owned several "free" printers that you get with a new computer order. They have all been inkjets. Never again will I have an inkjet as my primary printer. This HP is really nice. The print quality is much cleaner looking and more precise than an inkjet and it is also much more economical. With the amount of pages I have printed out so far, I would have gone through at least 1 or 2 black ink cartridges. I rarely use color so this black and white laserjet is perfect. I really could not have asked for more from this printer. I had read all kinds of reviews about this printer before buying it and they have all been true. The HP laserjet 1012 is a great buy. It is reliable, fast, and produces great results.
