Pros: Excellent print quality, speedy printing Cons: Max 8x12 size
I had been using a Kodak 8650PS dye sub printer for a couple of years by the time the 1400 came out (and was available), so I got the 1400 since it was Mac compatible out of the box (the 8650 was not and required a $600 network card to play with the ...

Pros: Beautiful consistent color and B&W photo output. No inkjet clogging. Cons: Limited to Kodak's paper varieties so some artistic limitations and high costs/page compared with inkjets.
I enjoy printing color photos but tend to do so in large quantities on rare occasions. What this means is that my inkjet printers have always managed to clog between the last time they were used and the time I want to print. Once that happens a few ...

Stay away from this printer
by davewilliams8 ,Jun 04 '06
Pros: cheap. you get less then you pay for with this. Cons: bad quality. colors not line up. White specs in the flesh tones. NO SUPPORT.
I am a photographer looking to replace a series of kodak 8500 printers. purchased two 1400 printers with regret.
bad print quality - white specs in the flesh tones. Kodak DID NOT SUPPORT IT AT ALL."Sorry we do not replace printers" was there response. too bad.
I now have two pieces of junk to dispose of. Too bad Kodak has stooped to accept this kind of chinese junk and then not support it. Here is another customer lost.

Kodak 1400 Printer
by johndodds ,Jul 27 '05
Pros: the printer is quick to set and output can be fantastic Cons: the matte finish ribbon dulls prints considerably
Mostly good news! very easy to set up out of the box. No software problems. build quality very good.I was initially disapointed with the output of this printer, after much testing and paper wasting I found this to be the "xtralife" coating as used in the matte ribbon, change to gloss and performance improves.(note: the paper seems to be the same in either Matte or Gloss) On a properly set up monitor when printing from Photoshop choose RGB colour space and check the printer management option box and I would expect you to be totally satisfied with the results,I aim to sell prints from this printer and I am very fussy about output quality. I intend to use this printer in the field at outdoor equestrian events and can see no reason why it will not perform this role exactly, Hope all this helps.

Excellent Printer
by suzk ,Jun 09 '06
Pros: Easy, low-cost, quiet, quick to load, requires little space, great color. It's Kodak. Cons: Must be in dust-free environment for best results. Plastic holder for ribbon flimsy.
I purchased this printer in December of 2005. Since then I have printed approximately 8 50 sheet boxes of the 8 1/2 x 14 Glossy.
Except for a little dust problem that was my fault, all the prints have been outstanding.
Although I am using this mainly for olde tyme photos, I have also printed some full-color (non-sepia) prints and they are also fabulous color.
I am using PhotoShop CS and PhotoShop Elements 4. The Kodak program was simple and OK for snapshot printing. The quality and ease of use difference in package printing, retouching, downloading directly from the camera, and managing thousands of images makes the PhotoShop programs much better for my use.
I have noticed some slight scratches on the prints from time to time and I attribute this to my less than dust free environment.
I owned a professional color and b/w lab in California for 17 years; I printed with the Fuji Pictrostat Machines for another 8 years; this Kodak 1400 is much easier, quicker, and cheaper by far. I'm curious to see how it holds up over time.

Kodak 1400
by coyote12 ,Jun 16 '05
Pros: Low cost, fast speed. Cons: Would like 8.5x11 media, 12/14 inch media is just weird. A little deep in size.
Basically a good printer. Speed is 90 seconds, accurately stated by manufacturer. Found the prints a bit dark for my taste, but the driver allowed correction.
The calibration routine, screwed up the text enormously. Creating a bizarre read shadow. When reset to default, the text reverts to normal.
Good printer, on a par with 8500, and near to the higher end Kodaks

A Waste of Time, Money and Space
by davbog ,Dec 24 '05
Pros: Well, they were delivered in a short time. . . Cons: Nothing to recommend here; horrible consistency, no support.
We purchased two of the 1400's for use in a Mac design lab here at the college where I direct the Graphic Design program. In short, they have been wastes of time, money and space. Nice prints for the first 6 or 8 pages from one printer - nothing worthwhile EVER from the other. Repeated problems with communication between computers and printers, many wasted papers because the printers jam or "error" during one of the passes. Errors also if the ribbon barcode is not "readable" (turned just so in the ribbon holder). Just a disaster, overall. Kodak was NO HELP AT ALL with support questions. . . they got the $500 for each printer, but will never see a contract from this professor again. We're dumping these overpriced, cumbersome (truly - the paper trays extend the printer to a full 30.5" from front to back!) undependable pieces of half-baked hardware, and staying away from Kodak.
