My old rice cooker died, and I hate to even tell you why. I might have been in a rush and "accidentally" not set it up right, causing it to short out. Maybe. Either way, after all the laughs and smart comments by the family about my lack of cooking ...
Pros: Generous capacity and consistent results. Steamer basket for added versatility. Cons: No ON/OFF switch. MUST be unplugged when not in use.
Cooking rice on the stove is an iffy proposition for even the most skilled chef. You just can't dial your burners to the same precise simmer every time, nor can anyone really judge the exact moment when the water "returns to boil". The rice cycle on most ...
Pros: Easy to use, easy to clean, makes a perfect pot of rice. Cons: No off option.
I received this rice cooker as a gift for my wedding. I fell in love immediately after my first use. My husband eats rice with EVERYTHING so we always have white rice on hand. I tried cooking on the stove several times and always ended up with bad ...
Pros: Good anger management practice. Target should let you return it. Cons: Dries Out Food. Defeats Purpose. One-Touch-Operation is not-so-operational.
I heard all these wonderful things about Rice Cookers. Make perfect rice. Toss in some frozen vegetables or some seasonings. Combine the ingredients at night and have perfect food in the morning! So you'll imagine how excited I was to find this Rice ...
lovely for people who either like slightly cooked mush or brown burnt rice.
if you put the recommended amount of water in, you get burnt rice, if you try learning from your mistakes and add more water you get slushy paste.......either way the rice becomes incredibly disgusting
I bought this rice cooker because my past two procter-silex rice cookers both died, this rice cooker was twice as expensive and twice as bad
I've now experimented with several kinds of rice and different levels of water and even soaking my rice before I turn on the cooker. The rice always comes out a little matted (slightly burnt) on the bottom. But the box and the instructions say that you can keep the rice on warm for 12 hours. After only four hours, the bottom of the rice is burnt, badly. Oster's customer service treated me like a moron. They just kept quoting the instructions, which I had followed, precisely. The warm temperature is set too high, and that's all there is to it.
This is the first rice cooker I've bought and wish that I did some research first. There seems to be 2 outcomes with this rice cooker, burnt or mushy. I've tried adding more/less water, soaking the rice before cooking, and even swirling the unit every so often to try to stir the rice. The one time I didn't have burnt rice was when I shut it off before it was done. This yielded in mushy rice.
I've only tried this cooker with brown rice, which is usually a little more difficult to cook. Maybe it works better with white rice. Or maybe it turns white rice into brown rice.
This product is easy to setup, but I'm almost ready to go back to cooking it on the stove. I've never burnt rice on the stove.
Don't buy this rice cooker. by sheilagh ,Feb 22 '05
Pros: Nonstick pot inside=burned rice isn't too difficult to clean up. Cons: burned rice, rice water everywhere, difficult clean up
I got burned rice every time I used this machine. But worse is that the thing spit rice water all over the counter, enough that it would drip down onto the floor, all the while the 'convenient' liquid catcher remained empty. I returned it for an identical cooker, thinking I got a bad one, and the same thing happened. What a waste of time.
Great rice pudding & good rice both with practice by justsayit ,Dec 09 '05
Pros: Good price, large capacity, easy to use,has non stick pot. Dont cost $125 up. Cons: steamer tray is too small, unit needs a beeper & adjustable thermostat
This good looking rice cooker is priced right for its capacity & quality. To avoid steaming the woodwork I turn the rice cooker so that the power button faces the wall.
My rice cooker sat unused for a little while.
After trial & error & experimenting I've improved the quality of my brown rice cooking results. Now I'm using it again more often.
I rinse the rice to help the foaming. I obtained acceptable results the rice was not not stuck together & had minimal over cooking where it contacted the pan. I left the steamer tray inside when cooking rice to help retain steam.
Step 1. I now add measured water HOT tap water to the rice cooker then add the measured rice. Step 2. SOAKING THE RICE I turn on the rice cooker on high for 5-7 flip the lever to heat the rice & water inside the cooker then temporarily unplug the unit. Step 3. WAIT 15-20 minutes Step 4.COOKING THE RICE Plug the cooker in & push the on button as directed in manual. Step 5. WAIT until you hear the power button & thermostat click. Step 7. WAIT 5-15 min then remove rice.
Pros: Easy to clean and easy to store Cons: None really if you don't mind the crust.
Regarding the "crust" on the bottom, I have found a trick - if you let the rice soak for 20-30 minutes prior to cooking it, it will have less of the crust and just slightly brown it. Also, making a big batch (4 cups of rice or more) makes a difference.
We use "milled rice" by Homai, which is actually an asian rice and it comes out perfectly. We've also had really good luck with Basmati rice as well.
I love the fact that I can steam vegetable at the same time and one night, I cooked shrimp and clams in and they came out perfectly.
I also like how it keeps the rice warm for up to twelve hours.
We got this as a wedding gift and find ourselves using it at least 2-3 a week.
4715 / 10-cup Rice Steamer Does Not Live Up to Standards by fugees ,Nov 08 '04
Pros: Great! If you like burnt, sticky or dry hard rice. Cons: Bad! If you don't like burnt, sticky or dry hard rice.
Next time I decide to purchase an item, I'll make sure to stop by epinions first. I was never able to get a decent serving of rice no matter how precisely I followed directions. The components were simple enough, however, each serving attempt turned out burned rice on the bottom of the pan. No matter if I increased/decreased the water, not if I increased/decreased the timing, not if I decreased/increased the amount of rice, type of rice, stir the rice, pray for the rice, lay hands on the rice, NOTHING worked. And there's no audio signal to indicate when ready.
My husband, a real "Mr. Know-It-All," thought I was incompetent, so he took a shot at it, and guess what? "Burned Rice."
What really frightened me was when my husband mistakenly threw away the packing box. I was eagerly ready to return the appliance, but I thought I left the receipt inside the box. Figuring I would be stuck with this, this, thing, I turned the house upside down and eventually found the receipt. Phew!
I'm totally turned off with this product.
Folks, save your money and skip the headaches. Don't buy this product!
It's a "Persian Rice Cooker" by jade408 ,Jul 24 '05
Pros: Durable, easy to use, forms the "crust" Cons: none yet
I have read all the reviews complaining about "burnt rice" but it sounds like a case of the "rice crust." When researching rice cookers a few friends warned me there are Asian rice cookers and Persian rice cookers. Persian ones (And sometimes those designed for Latin markets) leave a "crust" at the bottom of the pot because for many groups, that is the best part of the rice. This rice cooker is designed for those customers. So if you don't like the crispy crust at the bottom of your rice, skip this rice cooker.
It does a great job with long grain rice brown and white varieties and seems to be more durable than other cookers I have used. Only time will tell.if it lasts longer than six months.
Great product, does rice and more! by storycrafter ,Jan 28 '05
Pros: Great rice, features found in more expensive cookers, low price! Cons: Haven't found any.
Bought our Oster Inspire rice cooker at Target for $30. It has a number of features found on much more expensive models: lock-down lid, 12 hour keep warm timer, steamer so you can steam something above while your rice cooks below.
The rice is excellent, never burnt and the keep warm feature works. It's very easy to clean - the bowl is lined with non-stick coating and wipes clean easily with a bit of soapy water and a sponge. You can also use it to make soups, puddings, etc.
Stopped working after 4 uses by sharir ,Oct 16 '07
Pros: Good for cooking brown rice. Non-stick pan makes it easy to clean. Cons: Dry white rice. Stopped working after 4-5 uses.
We were replacing a rice cooker that we'd had for over 20 years and were looking forward to the non-stick pan and warming feature. We were disappointed with the dry texture of the white rice cooked using measurements given in the instruction manual and served almost immediately. Brown rice was fine. After less than two months and 4-5 uses, the rice cooker wouldn't turn on. I returned it for a refund.
