Pros: Very simple to operate; outstanding picture quality at 1 and 2 hours; good value Cons: Lower quality at longer duration (4 and 6 hours) but not horrible
I purchased my DVD recorder in early 2004 from Best Buy. It was in-stock when I went for it and got it for about $340. I like gadgets but am not highly proficient with electronics. Therefore, one of my criteria for my very first DVD players was ...

Panasonic Clone
by hyflyer11 ,Jan 18 '04
Pros: Works as well as expected. A fine product. Priced competitively. Cons: Doesn't have a hard disc.
I believe that this DVD player/recorder is a clone of the Panasonic DMR-E50. All specifications listed are exactly the same. Samsung, when called, indicated that the R4000 was originally tested using panasonic discs. When an attempt is made to program remote controls of connecting devices (TV's, VCR's), they do not react to the Samsung code, but WILL operate with the Panasonic code.
Read the Epinions of the Panasonic DMR-E50. They are the Epinions of the DVD-R4000 as well.
By the way, it's a fine machine.

Great DVD Recorder!
by mrdrips ,Jan 07 '04
Pros: Quality DVD recording, easy to use, great remote, Supports Dolby Digital 2.0 sound Cons: Only supports DVD-R & RAM formats, No sync cable to control Dish / cable box
Overall the Samsung unit is a great DVD recorder. I had my unit for over a month and love it. The 1hr and 2hr recording modes product excellent results that are at DVD level quality. The 4hr record mode is still very good, but you can see a difference between this recording mode and the original (very slight). The unit has a good remote and is fast at finalizing a DVD. Great for archiving movies (etc.), putting family movies on DVD, and lastly, recording TV programs to watch later. In addition, setup and installation was very easy. The only major draw back is that it does not have the capability to sync with a cable/dish box for timed recordings.

Incompatible with others
by cq20 ,Nov 18 '07
Pros: Handy and quick to use for my purposes. Cons: Other players have difficulty reading the disks.
I bought this machine to copy my many VHS and BETA and Hi-8 home movies. After making dozens of DVDs, I found out that most other DVD players either a)will not read the disk, or, b) reads only the video and not the audio. This is an older unit (2003?), so it looks like a lot of compatibility issues with newer players.
