I picked up the Sony RDR-GX7 at a local electronics retailer this past August for nearly $100, as this was old display stock that sat around since it was released, back in 2003. No one bit on it for quite a while, so I did - they had several ...

Bought the Sony to replace a Philips DVDR985 that decided it no longer liked the brand of DVD+RW blank disks I had purchased in bulk. The Philips had some nice features as well as a wide variety of recording speeds (from 60 minutes to 8 hours, with ...
Pros: Picture recovery and quality Cons: Impossible to copy your copies.
Like many other people we were looking for a way to copy our analog vhs home videos to DVD format without the use of a computer. We have other Sony products so we thought that a Sony DVD Recorder was the obvious choice. We have found that the quality of ...
Pros: Beautifully designed & made. Straightforward to setup and use. Cons: Limited editing functions with DVD+RW and won't record 16:9 pictures on DVD+RW.
I purchased the Sony RDR-GX7 because it is a dual RW (DVD-WR and DVD+RW) compatible home DVD recorder. Like so many other people interested in essentially replacing the VCR, I wasn't convinced which was the better or more suitable DVD format. Other manufa ...

What's wrong with first year? by justintymne ,Dec 17 '03
Pros: - Superior picture quality
- Multi RW format
- Made in Japan quality
Cons: - A bit pricey but well worth the $$$
I have nothing but praises for the RDR-GX7. My first priority is Picture Quality, I have over 300 VHS, 8mm tapes to archive. Second is compatibility. I must be able to swap disks with friends and neighbors and reuse them over and over again.
The Sony fits my bill perfectly. The picture quality is totally outstanding. Completely cleans and enhances the original signals to a level which continues to amaze me. And I am using S-VHS input already.
Since it writes to -R/-RW and +RW, I don't care which medium wins or the supplier is running out of. I can easily flip between them. And the finalized discs plays in both my $499 and $59 DVD player without a hiccup.
Yes, it is a bit pricey, does not have a hard disk and it's the first generation. But you get what you paid for. And what's wrong with the first generation when the manufacturer loads it up with the finest components and MADE IN JAPAN quality? I say you'd better grab one before the cost cutting second generation models starts appearing!
Great recorder that does it all! by kcoleman4434 ,Feb 29 '04
Pros: works right out of box, easy set up Cons: price, but it is coming down
I have had this unit for a couple of weeks and have put it through many recordings. I have it connected to my direct tv tivo and to a high end receiver.
I use it mainly to record off tv which it does without error. The picture quality is top notched and very user friendly. Hook up is easy, I have mine from Tivo, to recorder, to vcr, to tv. operating instructions warn of this due to loss in picture quality, but I have not seen any loss.
The unit is very easy and pretty fool proof. It is a big unit which may not fit many entertainment centers but that may not be all bad.
overall a great unit that records dvd-r, dvd-rw and dvd+rw. The best one, the one you can edit the most, is dvd-rw.
camcorders can hook up and use one touch recording.
overall a great unit which does what it says it will do.
