SS-MF550H Speaker Pair: Sony's Bargain Floor Speaker Option

by dxbari , Oct 10 '04
Pros: Reasonably good sound. Nicely sized for the space conscious.
Cons: Fragile power handling. Completely outclassed by the Pioneer S-H453F-K at the same price.
When looking for a compact floor speaker set, the first pair that I bought were the Sony SSMF550H. I was unhappy on many different levels with that choice. Evaluation/Issues They sounded alright in the store but I wasn't sure how it would ...

Decent for the price

by alexkr , Sep 19 '04
Pros: Decent sound quality, inexpensive, slim
Cons: Lows could be a little loose
I was looking for inexpensive but decent sounding main speakers for my office, and SONY SS-MF550H caught my attention as they had very good reviews, and could be purchased for under $150 per pair. So I went ahead and got them. The quality of sound ...

A great choice for Audiophile and Non Adiophile alike.

by eikoop , Jan 03 '05
Pros: Sound quality and price.
Cons: Manual is of no use.
My circa 1980 Advent speakers along with my 55 watt 1987 Sony receiver had just about had it so it was time for me to look into buying a new stereo system. As a non-audiophile I relied on the Epinions site for guidance. My new system consists of ...

Excellent and affordable.

by pyewacket3 , Oct 05 '04
Pros: Amazing sound at an amazing price.
Cons: Any color you want as long as it's black...
As with many of you, when I wanted to put together a new home theater rig I had a budget to deal with. Starting from scratch I had to balance price and performance over the whole system. I wanted the 7.1 surround experience for movie watching but I ...

Good value for the money, but not recommended.

by mplieb , Jan 03 '05
Pros: Good price, good value, clear mid-high range.
Cons: Could use some more bass/depth, need to be brighter.
I have a very similar reaction as the other reviewers about these speakers, and won't repeat the technical details. These speakers were purchased to replace 25 year old KLH 2 way speakers. Initially, these new Sony speakers sounded clear and crisp, ...

Good for the price

by brentmbutler , Mar 02 '04
Pros: Affordable & stylish, are simply a great value.
Cons: Drops some mid-range frequencies. Bright yellow is a downer.
I had my heart set on some earlier models of Sony speakers when Sony updated the product line and released these various "50" models: 550, 650 & 750. My very limited budget only allowed for these 550's (or nothing at all), so I chose these, after some ...

Good Speakers for the Price!
by robmlisanti ,Jan 12 '06
Pros: Nice smooth sound from Highs, Great price! Nice looking
Cons: Lows could be better, Lousy speaker wire included
First off let me say I tested these speakers on more than a few occasions,( In Best Buy ) and everytime I enjoyed hearing them, especially the highs. When I brought them home finally in December 2005 and got rid of my Aiwa Bookshelves, I was floored!. These speakers are a great deal for $159.00 a pair. I also have the SONY CN- Center channel and the MB 150 Bookshelves for surrounds, and I have the SA-WM250 Sub woofer all together it's a very nice system.
The 550's Nano Tweeters have very smooth high's, and mids.
The Lows aren't quite as good as I thought at first! but after around 40 hours of breaking the woofers in they sounded decent. I say for the price they are well worth the money. ( p.s. Buy Monster Speaker Wire )

Sony speaker review
by cabinio ,Mar 22 '04
Pros: Sound awesome! Look cool! Excellent price!
Cons: Puny 22gauge speaker wire that came with them.
I bought these speakers on impulse about 6 months ago and I've been happy ever since. I have them hooked up to a Harman Kardon receiver with new 16 gauge wire. I use the system for everything, computer music, CD's, DVD's, and it sounds great.
Good solid bass, brilliant highs and the midrange is mixed well into the middle of it all.
These speakers can handle anything I throw at them and for the price I paid, I am very satisfied!
I plan on getting a center speaker and surrounds, and I will definitely buy the Sony speakers to fit into the system.
