Sylvania SRD3900 DVD Player / VCR Combo

Pros: Cheap (you get what you pay for).
Cons: Eats VHS tapes.

I have purchased 3 Sylvania VCR's (one was a combo VCR/DVD player) over a period of about 4 years. Each had the exact same problem, which started shortly after the warranty expired (surprise, surprise!): they all gobbled my tapes (i.e., at some point ...

Pros: The VCR side works great! Good sound and playback on most tapes!
Cons: DVD player will leave you disappointed. Won't play, load and/or give you your DVD back.

I bought this model over the summer and within several months the DVD player managed to become completely useless! I mean it won't play anything. The VCR works fine, but sometimes won't play tapes recorded from other VCR decks (which is probably common I think). I am VERY disappointed with this purchase and I wish I could go back in time and read all reviews before I decided to buy. If you look at the DVD player once the door opens, you can tell that it was made with cheap material and it is not that stable at all! I've had so many problems with the DVD side that I finally gave up and quit using it. I now hook my laptop computer into the input and outputs of this model to play my DVDs. Frustrating!!!!!

Pros: Cheap, two in one design save space. And... well, cheap.
Cons: You get what you paid for, no dual layer DVD support.

Seems Sylvania made these players without dual layer DVD support which mean some DVDs would only play half way or not at all! Sylvania stated this was sold for Sears and it was Sears' responsibility for firmware update. Sears never responded to email.

Bad choice, selling players without dual layer support is like selling a car without headlight and dealer refusing to install them. Since it is a factory defect, Sylvania should take it up to offer firmware update.

Pros: VCR is the only one that works great
Cons: DVD takes too long to load.

The VCR player works fine but the DVD player doesn't work as well.
It takes several tries for the player to read the disc and even when it does, it takes about 5 minutes to load the disc and play.
this player is very mediocre.
