Tiananmen Square Today.

by Ironcladd Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Feb 22 '05
Pros: Fascinating place at the heart of Beijing.
Cons: None.
Tiananmen Square Today. By James P. Zaworski I visited Tiananmen Square at least three times during my two-week stay in Beijing, as part of my one-month adventure odyssey to The Peoples Republic of China. Tiananmen Square is the heart of the ...

The Faces of Tiananmen Square

by MariaEkaterina , Oct 28 '01
Pros: Unforgettable place of history and human aspirations for a better life.
Cons: If possible don't draw a crowd!
Tiananmen Square has its rightful place in history. Who can forget the shocking images of the students standing in front of tanks, their human bodies no match for the machine that was dispatched to serve a purpose, an ideology and silence the...

The Anticlimax of Tianamen Square

by LuzonTS Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jul 10 '02
Pros: Not crowded, good prices for trinkets, a few museums nearby to visit.
Cons: The demeanor of the guards takes away from the experience.
In the middle of our organized tour in Beijing we had the chance to stop by the Tiananmen Square. While the square itself in my opinion was not all that great of a visit, knowing the long history behind it did lend to some of the respect...

The Signs of Communism

by lilbooboo , May 07 '03
Pros: Historic, huge, in the center of Beijing
Cons: Overwhelming feel of oppression
Similar to the Great Wall, Tian’anmen Square is not as exciting as an amusement park. There are no rides to make you feel squeamish or overpriced hot dog stands here. No, it is simply the largest public square in...

A Silent Witness of History

by augustwind , Apr 07 '00
Pros: Many historic reminds all around the squares
Cons: NOT a place fore relaxing
I read all three reviews already written on Tiananmen Square. My whole impression is, none of the three really like the place. They only somewhat respect it as a place where many historic events happened.

To many westerners,...

Tanks yes, bikes no

by LRai , Feb 10 '08
Pros: Historic value and beauty if you really take time to look.
Cons: Alot of walking, don't go in winter it's too cold.
As a special treat for my job teaching here in China I was given a trip to Beijing. I would not have picked February to travel here in the freezing cold but I had no choice since this was the only time I could take this trip. I went to see Beijing just ...

Inside the Red Zone: The Museum of Chinese History

by Panthera_Leo , Jul 31 '00
Pros: No Western museum can match this collection of Chinese treasures.
Cons: It's housed in a dreary Soviet-style building.
Want to get away from Beijing's hordes of tourists? Visit the Museum of Chinese History on the east side of Tiananmen Square. It covers the nation's history up to the 1911 revolution. The museum doesn't get invaded by busloads of tourists, and admission...

The Gate of "Heavenly" Peace

by mikesj , May 20 '00
Pros: Great historical importance, nice location
Cons: Look communist, not friendly
Tiananmen Square is a place of great importance in China. Not that it has a magnificent beauty or shopping mall, its historicity deserves every tourist’s visit to China.

It is often referred as the heart of China. The People’s Republic of...

The Square you gotta go to

by playchina , Nov 13 '02
Pros: the history of the place makes it a must see
Cons: there isn't much to see
The best way to go to Tiananmen Square is at the end of a long stay in China. Realizing this may not be possible, there is one other thing I would definitely recommend - don't go at night.

At night Tiananmen Square looks like a big empty...

The World's Largest Square

by jbiesnecker , Jul 24 '02
Pros: Historical significance, close to a number of Beijing sites.
Cons: Can get very crowded, guards and cameras everywhere.
Beijing proudly proclaims Tiananmen (which translates as "Gate of Heavenly Peace," corresponding to the entrance to the Forbidden City that is just across the street) Square as the largest public square on Earth, and there's little room to argue that....

Historic Square

by kjscrafts , Dec 08 '07
Pros: Nice to visit as a photo opportunity
Cons: street vendors can get annoying at times
Tiananmen Square is the world’s largest public square. Where the square is now located used to be the quarters for the Imperial Guard, and the rice and wood storage for the imperial kitchen. The area became a public square during the Republican Era ...

Blowing Bubbles in Tiananmen

by TheSmartTraveler Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Mar 04 '00
Pros: Backdrop for your photos with Chairman Mao
Cons: Goose Stepping Soldiers
The huge portrait of Chairman Mao and the words "Long Live the People's Republic of China" and "Long Live the Unity of the Peoples of the World" loom over Tiananmen. It is a fun place to see and be seen. I brought along some bubbles...

Tiananmen Square: the Missing Part of My Tour

by cami101 , Mar 23 '00
Pros: great place for photographs, the hustle and bustle of the city surrounding such an emotionally marked place was unique to see
Cons: the renovations, the smog of the city is absolutely horrible
When I signed the study abroad contract Asian Study Tour at my school, one of the sites I most wanted to visit was Tiananmen Square. I had read about the demonstrations, the massacre, and length history behind the large gathering place. Our visit to...
