Pros: Kocatepe Mosque is amazing Cons: Big, dirty city with not too many tourist sites.
Ankara, the capital of Turkey (not Istanbul - surprise!) is a busy, smoggy city. Most tourists give it a miss, but there's a few sights worth checking out if you're passing through. Ankara is also a major transportation hub - and it was the perfect way...

Pros: Whirling Dervishes Cons: Whirl only in December
Konya, one of Turkey's oldest continuously inhabited cities, is south of Ankara. If you want to see the Whirling Dervishes, I recommend you plan your visit in the first half of December.

Pros: Government Center, A lot to do Cons: Hard to get to, Weather
Ankara is a very large city with it's population over 2.2 million. I is the capital city for Turkey and has a lot to look at in the city. i would not recommended this city during the winter months because the city gets a good amount of snow each year....

Pros: Freindly people, lovely sights Cons: Smog is a problem...
I agree with this opinion, but would just like to add a few things. Because Ankara is nestled in a valley, the city does not get much air flow. As a result smog can be a huge problem. Most Turkish households still burn wood and or kerosene for cooking...

Pros: Museums, Shopping, Sights, Food Cons: None
We flew on Turkish Airlines from Miami to Istanbul and connected to another Turkish Airlines plane to Ankara. We cleared customs and were off.
If you want to be in the heart of things, I recommend you find one of the many hotels in the Ulus...
