Portsmouth, New Hampshire; The Real Deal, Stuck in a Time Warp

by popsrocks popsrocks is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Oct 07 '05
Pros: A city that hasn't come into the modern world in looks and holds 1800's charm.
Cons: It's good for one days visit by me.
Generally the only stop going up to and from Maine in New Hampshire is at the Discount Liquor Stores just off the Interstate. The prices really are good. We have however heard and read things about Portsmouth many times. We recently thought to spend ...

You CAN Get There From Here

by UpNy99 , Sep 22 '02
Pros: Small urban town with a real downtown area
Cons: Lots of tourists
Even though Portsmouth is across the river from Maine..you CAN get there from here! This small New Hampshire city is located about an hour north of Boston via Route 128 to U.S. 95 or 495 to 93 to 101 via the Mass. Pike or old Route 1..anyway a good map...

Cons: it snows a bit in the winter
Review Topic:  Sights & Attractions

New England at Its Best

by Writerip , Aug 25 '00
Pros: lots to see and do. Year round cultural events
Cons: A little bit pricey
Located on the southern New Hampshire coast, Portsmouth is a city offering something for everyone. Even the most discerning tourist can find something of interest in Portsmouth. From the historical wonderlands of Strawberry Banke and Portsmouth's Black...

Charming New England seaside town

by loraxc , Mar 14 '00
Pros: quaint, vibrant, attractive town
Cons: pricey stores, hard to park
For four summers, I worked at a Unitarian Conference Center out on the Isles of Shoals, a group of islands off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. Employees got one day off a week, and there was only one place to go: Portsmouth. That's where the ferry...

Portsmouth: Boston on a shoestring

by catseyeglasses , Nov 24 '99
Pros: Convenient and quaint
Cons: Not much night life
New Hampshire's state motto is "Live Free or Die," but you'd never know it from visiting this seaside city, located on the hiccup of New Hampshire's coastline. Portsmouth won't be confused with cosmopolitan Boston, an hour to the south;...

NH Seacoast, not to be bypassed

by newenglanda , Oct 27 '04
Pros: Only one hour from Boston, seaside charm without the "attitude" of Cape Cod
Cons: Very cold ocean waters, even in late Summer; "white-trashy" reputation of a couple of communities
There is no Epinions category for the "New Hampshire Seacoast," only for Portsmouth, the largest city in the area. Much of what I am going to write is about the area abutting Portsmouth, so please bear with me. The New Hampshire seacoast is the ...

Portsmouth on a budget

by Backpacker , Dec 07 '99
Pros: colonial atmosphere, many attractions for couples
Cons: pricey
I don't know about you, but the American Revolution in 5th grade history class conjured up so many images of cobblestone roads, salt-box houses, curvy and hilly streets, horse and carriages and men with funny hats. This is what Portsmouth is all about....

Portsmouth- Quaint, Trendy and Something for Everyone!

by RiverNH , Jan 24 '00
Pros: Lots to do, historic, great restaurants and shopping
Cons: Since closure of Air Force Base, hard to find one
Portsmouth NH is one of those places that I can recommend for a multitude of reasons-- Both to live and visit.

Portsmouth is on the coast of NH, just across the river from Maine.
The port area is filled with historic old buildings, built...

Very nice place to visit, hard place to live

by Hamilton62 , Jun 21 '00
Pros: Pretty, great local arts scene, fun to walk, Strawberry Banke
Cons: Most suited for visiting for a short vacation
I lived in Portsmouth for 10 months from 1988-89. It's changed a bit since then and it seems to me that the changes are for the better. It's a lively place, fun to walk around, fun to visit, a great local arts scene for visual arts, music and theatre and...

I recall Prescott Park in fall

by babyfishmouth , Oct 24 '00
Pros: Perks of a big city, charm of a small one
Cons: Not always easy to find a parking space
Review Topic:  Overview

In the live free or die state, Portsmouth is clearly the eat, drink and be merry city - at least for those of us Gen-Xers.
I moved to New Hampshire this past summer, after giving up on the idea that...

"Po Town"---the cutest little town...except for that biker bar

by amytart , Jan 25 '00
Pros: Many things to do for many different people. Great restaurants, bars, seaside attractions

Portsmouth, NH...one of the wonderful reasons that visiting New England is so exciting and charming all wrapped into one.

A Whale Of A Watch

by majick117 , Jul 24 '00
Pros: A Never Forgotten Memory
Cons: None
This is the ultimate experience. If you ever happen upon NH's seacoast, you need to take a day out to go on the water to whale watch.
The excitement of such an expedition will remain with you for many years to come.

I'm not here to...

Relax with the kids!

by ramel99 , Feb 14 '02
Pros: Two bedrooms with separate baths, living room, reasonable cost
Cons: Need to go through lobby to pool, restaurants not real close.
We stayed at the Best Western Wynwood on the Route 1 traffic circle for a weekend in Feb 01. It was mostly a getaway for the family to enjoy the pool. The room we had had two separate bedrooms, each with TVs, separated by a large living room with its own...
