Those who have come to know Celine Dion as a purveyor of heart-on-sleeve epics of passion and pathos, accompanied by arrangements large enough to sink the Titanic, will have to readjust their preconceptions after hearing 1 FILLE & 4 TYPES. Here, the French-Canadian siren strips away the layers of her divahood in favor of scaled-down pop/rock productions where she fronts a small band of players (hence the album's title). To be sure, it's not exactly the Rolling Stones; the velvet glove that the band gives these tunes suggests mid-1980s Bryan Ferry more than anything. Nevertheless, this represents a huge step for someone in Dion's position, further underlined by the fact that all the songs are sung in French. Who would have expected such a step away from MOR accessibility from Celine? 1 FILLE... |
