Nation: "[Pierre] Merot uses his story of bumbling tragicomedy to skewer the unexamined life but also to question the idea that examined life would be any different, any less disturbed....Merot accomplishes this...so skillfully, so hilariously, that devouring his slim book as quickly as possible is the reader's only recourse." |

This slim, vicious, and hilarious novel by French author Pierre Merot tells the story of a sad-sack alcoholic, the black sheep uncle of his family, who, at 40, lives in a state of frustration and rage (particularly directed at his mother, who he wishes would die). The uncle, as he is known, has sought love his whole life, but having failed at that, he will settle for hatred. Like Michel Houellebecq or Celine, or filmmaker Gasper Noe, Merot falls into a French existential tradition of railing against the indignities of the human condition, the meager tease of compassion, the cowardice of the soul. It's not, however, an unremittingly bleak book--Merot has a brilliant understanding of the parasitic relationship between bitterness and jest, and MAMMALS is filled with grim chuckles and wry insight. It's mostly gallows humor, the kind that can help a person survive a long, cold night. |
