More Information
New for 1997, the two door models received a walk-in device which allows for easy access to the rear and the four door models got an optional power moonroof. The RAV4 was originally released in Japan in May of 1994 and sold at a rate of almost 100,000 a year. Forty percent of the RAV4s parts came from the companies parts bin. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine is originally from the second generation Camry and its front suspension and all-wheel-drive system are borrowed from the Celica All-Trac. Safety features consist of side impact door beams, high mounted stop lamp and energy absorbing steering wheel. In addition to several appearance packages, optional equipment available include anti-lock brakes, aluminum wheels and cruise control.
