This 1997 release from German goth act HIM features nine tracks, including covers of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" and Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper." Finally released in the U.S. mere weeks before HIM's 2005 album, DARK LIGHT, the Finnish group's debut, GREATEST LOVESONGS VOL. 666, unveils its signature "love metal" sound to stunning effect. A potent combination of Sisters of Mercy-inspired goth and blistering hard rock mixed with a glam look and overtly romantic lyrics, HIM's aesthetic is fully formed here. Frontman Ville Valo's deep croon and charismatic presence are showcased throughout the album, particularly on the fierce tracks "Your Sweet Six Six Six," "Our Diabolikal Rapture," and "The Heartless," a more melodic foray for the band. Bolstered by two excellent metallic covers (Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" and Blue Oyster Cult's "[Don't Fear] the Reaper"), 666 reveals why HIM has garnered such a devoted international following. |
