Lying on the Kenai Peninsula, just south of Anchorage, the Kenai Refuge provides habitat for moose, caribou, bears, wolves, waterfowl and wetlands-nesting migratory waterbirds. The Kenai River, running through the refuge, supports world famous king salmon as well as large runs of silver and red salmon. Located only 2 hours drive south of Alaska's population center, Kenai NWR is the most heavily visited refuge in Alaska. Recreational facilities include 14 campgrounds and access areas, hundreds of miles of hiking trails and wilderness canoe trails, a visitor center, and public use cabins. The refuge is underlain by important oil and gas resources which are being extracted at production fields on the refuge. |
