Comfort is Most Important

If you pay attention to nothing else about soccer cleats, pay attention to this:
The most important thing to consider when choosing cleats is how well they fit!!
The bottom line is that if you aren't comfortable, it doesn't matter how well the shoes look, you will perform badly.
A cleat should fit well, but just like any other shoe, shouldn't be too snug. Be weary of the sides of the shoe. Make sure that there is at a little room on each side to allow for movement. There should be room for growth in children's cleats as well.
Adults shouldn't buy a size larger because obviously there won't be any growth. I don't recommend buying a size larger if the one you are wearing is a bit snug. When the shoe is too big, it will rub. This is the worst thing a cleat can do. Rubbing = Blisters. It will seriously impair your game if you are developing blisters the size of Texas on your heels.
When I try on cleats, I take a few laps around the store to make sure everything feels fine. Jump up and down too. Go through any motions that you could do while playing. Look for good support and stability. When you start and stop suddenly does your foot slip? Ask the sales person for any information about the shoes too.
The brand of shoe really only affects the price. Diadora and Puma has been good for me, but they are expensive and I wouldn't get them for a beginner who might not stick with the game. When I was in school I adored ADIDAS and would wear nothing else. ADIDAS usually has great durability. Nike shoes always run small. In normal cleats I wear a size 8, but in Nikes I need at least 9 1/2. Nikes are good for children because they look good and last (which is good for the parent). It is really a matter of personal choice.
