Protect yourself

Shinguards are arguably the most annoying piece of sports equipment in the eyes of soccer players. They are sweaty, binding, they slide around, etc. etc....
Why do we wear them?
Although players can go without shinguards it is not in their best interest. I'm not kidding here or being a "baby." Getting kicked in the shins happens all the time in soccer, you get hit by players feet, the ball, the ground and it is all happening at fairly high speed and force. Potential life-threatening injuries can be sustained without shin protection. Large bruises from hits to the shin can cause swelling and pooling of blood in the leg. If these clot then you have a dangerous injury. A blood clot that breaks loose and travels to the heart is deadly. I have seen fellow players bruised badly enough to form clots while playing soccer without shinguards so yes this does happen.
So what kind should I buy ?
The type that feels most comfortable. Something lightweight that fits the shape of your leg well and covers the area between your ankle and about 3-4 inches below your kneecap. I have worn every type imaginable: elastic sock-like variety with plastic bars sewn in, custom molded plastic with foam backing, kevlar reinforced plastic with ankle guards(my present guards by Brine), molded plastic with no ankle guards. They all cushion the blows somewhat. Buy what fits your budget and is comfortable. I recommend getting the ankle guards. If nothing else they provide some additional ankle support. Some people find them uncomfortable but you get used to the feeling of something around your ankle after awhile. Tough it out and maybe get fewer ankle injuries.
Good luck!
