The First Major Information Age Company
Apr 24 '00 (Updated Apr 26 '00)
Do you think it is possible to have a major online company that owns no hardware? A company where every member of the team is telecommuting, one that moves all its money online, that outsources all its book-keeping and the building of the institutional memory? A company where no member has signed any legal documents other than the initial Non Disclosure Agreement, such that no one is legally hired?
There is an understanding no one will ever get "fired," but, theoretically speaking, the Chairperson may kick out absolutely any member almost at whim?
A company that goes all the way to the IPO phase without a single dime of investment if only because no one gets paid until the company generates revenues and the interim expenses like web hosting are met by internal fund-raising, as in the money lent to the company by some of its members at a 20-30% interest rate, to be paid back with company revenue at a future date?
A company where every member of the team owns a part of it, each of the two teams get a chunk of the company that is distributed through a formula collectively devised, whereas 50% of the company is left aside for future company growth instead of for internal distribution?
A company which has two broad teams, the biz and the tech teams, each of which has a number of departments, each of the departments elect their leaders annually, preferably by consent, and from among them is chosen the team leader for that particular team, again by consent preferably? A company where each member gets paid only from the revenue that the company brings in or, in the post-IPO phase, should the company do well, if it can afford to cash some of its stocks? A company where there is a central cyber office, and an office for each of the two teams, and each of the departments, and each of the projects, a cyber office each available for free at Yahoo Connected Office, where the project offices get deleted once the work on a particular project has been completed?
A company where there is a major focus on group dynamics as well and members are encouraged to get to know each other as individuals, as in regular exchanges of texts and e-mails, and audio and video files/phone conversations, all available for free online, and occasional non-work get-togethers in real space when and where feasible?
A company where each member has total flexibility in terms of time preferably worked out in advance with their respective department and/or team leaders?
A company that has a core, nimble team of talented, committed people with internet access - geography being irrelevant - that works out a detailed, composite business-tech plan with one-year, 5-year and 10-year projections, to be annually updated in the case of the later two, and daily and weekly updated in the case of the former, and which the teams divide into numerous specific parcels of specific projects, work on which can be done without knowledge of the original plan, which can then be outsourced to talented, committed people with internet access at colleges and grad schools and countries with comparative lower incomes to make $10-15 an hour an attractive rate, or to other contract workers at the going rate in the market, but that after the company starts generating revenue?
Do you think it is possible to have the first major information age company?
