| Raye's Full Review: Nursing Profession |
I am not sure why I became a nurse. I enjoy the smile on the face of someone I have helped. I worked Emergency and got quick fixes and instant gratification for being able to think on my feet. Most recently, I have been an office nurse. I have good hours and get weekends and holidays off. I find I am continually looking for new challenges with my nursing career. My outlook has changed considerably with the birth of our first child. I am 41 years old and a mommy to a beautiful little girl. I am now doing some reflecting and looking close at what I do for a living. I would very much like to stay home with our daughter. I do have many opportunities for a variety positions. I do not like where nursing has gone to. We many times have to make choices based on finances. The type of care one patient gets may be different from another solely due to what a person can afford. It is hard for me to understand why this is so when we have the technology to quote save the world. The choices we have to make as nurses will only get harder as our future unfolds. I would hope my daughter would choose a profession that is true to here heart. I will not discourage her from pursuing a nursing career, but I can tell you if I had to do it over again, I would think twice. A nurse today is not what is was when I dreamed of caring for patients. I still try to look for that smile. My daughter is starting to smile more and I know that is my gratification of a job well done.
