It's Cake!

First of all, most kids should love flying. I mean who doesn't want to go in an airplane and be able to fly like the birds and see the world below them??
If you present flying as something fun to do, your child will think it's going to be fun. If you present it as something scary, they will think it's going to be scary.
So get them a few books about airplanes and flying, try some Arthur books, they must have something about airplanes.
During the flight, keep your kids busy or keep them fascinated by looking out the window (preferrably after you've taken off, so youdon't scare the BeJesus out of them).
You can play games, read books, or talk with other kids during the flight. Most kids get "wings" and a deck of cards too, and there is always drinks and peanuts passed around that should help keep your child entertained.
As a former child myself I must say airports and airplanes are fascinating and much more interesting than a car ride.
To prevent earaches, chew gum. Make it grape or orange, so they like it, and don't even mention any earache prevention in that or they will become hyperchondriacs. Trust me, its all psychological.
Basically, if you're calm and cool about the airplane situation, your kids should take on your attitude. It's all a matter of how you present and address the situation.
