| scottfs's Full Review: Mendocino, CA |
Mendocino is located along the beautiful Pacific Ocean, about 150 miles north of San Francisco (3.5 hours), or about 540 miles south of Portland, Oregon. The North Coast of California is characterized by rugged foothills and mountains that tumble down to the turbulent Pacific Ocean. There are many beaches along the North Coast, most accessible to the public, but the weather is often cool and windy, and the Pacific is too cold for comfortable swimming.
The Village of Mendocino is located on a headland which juts into the ocean forming a small peninsula. Formerly a timber and logging town, the village has undergone a renaissance of sorts, becoming one of the premier destinations along California's North Coast. Stubbornly recalcitrant, the residents of the Village have long resisted pressures to become just another nameless town in California. There are no chain fast-food restaurants, no franchised motels, no flashing neon lights. And that's the way the local are determined to keep their pretty village.
That's not to say that the villagers have turned their collective backs on the 21st century, or that they prefer genteel poverty to the seductions of modern capitalism. Far from it; boutiques line the main street of the village, and feature well-regarded restaurants, book stores, science toys, general merchandise, art and jewelry shops, garden and house decoration stores, and many others. Off the main street sit coffee and bagel shops, a birding supply shop, and several bed & breakfast establishments.
Mendocino is a great place to walk around, to poke your head inside a bookstore, or to have a very good meal featuring the local seafood. There is a museum, the Ford House, that gives a compact view of the town's history as a logging and wood processing center, as well as a boat-building location.
