Great Review, Heavenly Place (Reply to this comment)
by LLindaC
We just returned April 04. Your review captures the spirit of the place perfectly. There were no crowds when we visited, and the fog only showed itself briefly. The rest of the time, the brilliant blue of the sky and the intense colors in the water were mesmerizing. We met local artist Kevin Milligan and bought his book, which keeps the memories alive. The people here were so warm, each place more charming than the next. On EST, getting up at 5 am was a piece of cake- we strolled a mile from the wonderful Brewery Gulch Inn to Community Cookie and Coffee for a hazelnut and severe temptation- oh, those cookies and muffins! Here, there are 2 high speed computers, but there are usually locals in there and it seems more like a breakfast room.We had a great dinner at the Moose Cafe, also at Stevenswood Lodge and at Ravens (vegetarian) at the Stanford Inn. THAT is a fun place! The bar at Mac Callum house is a fun way to spend an evening.I thought Ft Bragg was pretty tacky- not worth the trip up except to ride horses at Ricochet Ranch. Great time- 4 hr ride through a redwood forest and on the 10 mile beach by the dunes at Mc Kerricher. Montgomery Woods is awesome- about a 1.5 hour drive on the hairpin road to Comptche- where you'll find the tallest redwood. Awesome, but I got major motion sickness that day. 128, as you mentioned, tested me as well. Next time, a patch! We are returning in 6 months- must try a few other things!

My wife and I visited Mendocino in 1984 and 1998 and found it just the same in 98 as it was in 84. It was a wonderful place in 84 and a wonderful place in 98. Eric's review is "right on" - any negatives are dwarfed by the positives. I especially like the fact that there are no fast foods, no chain hotels and no gaudy tourist attractions. Mendocino has so many natural God given assets that it hardly needs any human additions. Three cheers for the locals for keeping Mendocino natural. The problem with most beautiful places is that the commercial interest have taken over and all you see are chain hotels and fast food outlets. Mendocino deserves a "6" in my book.

we californians are so lucky; we must protect our natural treasures at all costs.
