NCL 12 day Ancient Holy Land Cruise Tour
Oct 07 '00
Lat year, November 1999, we went on a 12 day cruise tour of the Ancient Holy Lands. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES made all air and land arrangements.
We flew from Chicago OHARE field (ORD) to Athens, Greece where we boarded the Norwegian Sky. Next morning we docked at KUSADASI Turkey an took a day tour of Ephesus, The old ruins of Ephesus should be a "must" on any visitors itinerary. (For those who read the Bible, St Pauls "The Epistle of St Paul to the Ephesians" was written there.)
After spending the night at Sea we docked in Rhodes, Greece. Rhodes is where "The Colossus of Rhodes", known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once straddled the entrance to the town's harbor. Next morning we docked at Limassol, Cyprus. (Since the Middle Ages, when the Crusaders held Cyprus under Richard the Lionhearted, Limassol has been known for its wine-making industry and has been an important commercial center. Next morning we arrived at Haifa, Israel and went ashore for a two day tour of the Holy Land including Mount Carmel, Nazareth, Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. We saw too many places to describe here. We re-boarded the ship at Ashdod, Israel and cruised overnight to Port Said, Egypt where we took a land trip to Cairo, and visited Memphis, Sakkara and Giza to view the Pyramids. The next day wa spent cruising the Mediterranean Sea, docking at the island of Crete. After a tour of the Island we pent the next day cruising the Ionian Sea to Naples, Italy where we went ashore and visited fabled Pompeii. After a night at sea we docked at Civitecchia Italy (which is the Port for Rome). We disembarked the ship and spent two days in Rome before flying back to the good old USA.
I can't really say there was anything BAD about the whole trip. I would give it 5 stars and recommend it to anyone. The Norwegian Cruise Lines did an outstanding job, both on board the ship and ashore.
