Flying with young children.
May 08 '00
Recently I flew from Frankfurt Germany to Baltimore with my two young children. It was not the first time, nor will it be the last. The flight is over 8 hours long, so here are some things I brought to keep them busy.
My son is 6 years old and of course is into Pokemon. Before I left for the trip I bought him a Nintendo Game Boy. The Game Boy is very pricey, but worth it. It kept him busy a good amount of time. Besides him having one, almost every kid his age on the flight had one as well, so they swapped games most of the ride. For him I also brought fruit snacks, cheese goldfish, and Kool Aide squeezers.
My son carried his own back pack that I allowed him to pack himself. In it were crayons, coloring books, magazines, a jacket, and his own chosen snacks. He was comfortable for both flights and kept himself relatively busy.
My daughter was a little tougher because she is 18 months old and had to be kept very busy. I carried her stuff in my carry on bag. For snacks I brought cheese goldfish, fruit snacks, pretzel sticks, and her own juice cup.
As far as things to keep her busy, well with that age, they have a very short attention span. I brought her favorite books, like The Foot Book by Dr Suess, and her other favorites, maybe 2 others. I also brought for her puzzles that she loves, there aren't many pieces, maybe 4 or 5 so I didn't have a hard time keeping track of them. I also brought her Magna Doodle, at this age, she wants to write, so this was a excellent attention keeper as well as very little pieces. At her age she has to be in a car seat that is no fun, so make sure you take things like this to keep them busy. You will have a better flight.
We had 2 very pleasant flights, I would suggest as well that you take things for yourself, such as books, and snacks that you like as a adult. Make sure you take light weight jackets. The airlines usually give you blankets and pillows, and if you are lucky you get a movie too. Meals are also usually served, and my son got a big kick out of ordering for himself and having his own "tray".
Each child is different and have their own wants and needs. If you know your children as I know mine, bring their favorites, just hold back from giving them all that they want at one time or you will have your hands full the rest of the flight.
